Tory Support Hits Record Low Amid Looming Local Election Defeat

Tory Support Hits Record Low Amid Looming Local Election Defeat

Support for the Conservatives has hit a record low as the party braces itself for defeat in the local elections later this week. A poll by the More in Common think tank put the Tories on just 24% – the lowest vote share they have ever recorded for Rishi Sunak’s party. It leaves the Conservatives 19 points behind Labour, who are on 43%. The Lib Dems and Reform UK are neck-and-neck on 11% each. Worryingly for the prime minister, the poll was carried out after parliament passed his flagship Rwanda bill and Sunak’s pledge to finally get deportation flights off the ground in July. It is a further blow for the PM, who could face moves to oust him as Tory leader as soon as this week. Experts predict that the Conservatives are on course to lose up to 500 seats in the local council elections, with both Labour and the Lib Dems set to make substantial gains at their expense. A lot will hinge on the results of the mayoral elections in Tees Valley …

Rishi Sunak On ‘Really Good Form’ Despite Looming Election Defeats, Says Cabinet Ally

Rishi Sunak On ‘Really Good Form’ Despite Looming Election Defeats, Says Cabinet Ally

Rishi Sunak is on “really good form” despite dismal poll ratings, looming election defeats and suggestions he could face a leadership challenge, a cabinet ally has said. Health secretary Victoria Atkins defended the prime minister on Tuesday as “the most extraordinary person”. It has been reported that a bad night could lead to Tory rebels triggering a no confidence vote in Sunak in an attempt to oust him from office. In an interview with Sky News this morning, Atkins was asked if Sunak was “tense”, “relaxed”, or “upbeat” given the local elections “cliffhanger”. She said: “Rishi is the most extraordinary person in that he is so incredibly bright. “My goodness me you need someone who is intellectually up to the job in the role of No.10. “He is also very good at handling the pressure that every prime minister faces. “He is in really good form,” she said. “Politics is a tough business. We know that. But my goodness me he is ready to take on the next phase of the government.” The local elections …

Team Biden Is Posting Through the Looming TikTok Ban

Team Biden Is Posting Through the Looming TikTok Ban

I mentioned this in our first newsletter, but Representative Jeff Jackson from North Carolina had to issue a full-out YouTube-style apology video after his TikTok followers figured out he voted in support of this bill. Jackson’s posted to TikTok only a handful of times since the incident. Biden’s relationship with the app hasn’t really seemed to change much, however, and his campaign intends to keep using the platform to reach voters throughout the election. “A fragmented media environment requires us to show up and meet voters where they are—and that includes online,” a Biden campaign official told NBC News on Wednesday. “TikTok is one of many places we’re making sure our content is being seen by voters.” It’s too early to tell exactly which way the wind is blowing as far as public sentiment is concerned, but a lot of people aren’t thrilled. “If [Biden] wants to earn the trust of young people back, which he has repeatedly betrayed, he needs to be open and transparent about the reasoning behind this ban,” Luke Mullen, an …

“Ridiculous”: Experts say Trump’s court defiance threatens to “backfire” at looming contempt hearing

Donald Trump violated his expanded gag order seven more times since Monday, prosecutors told the judge presiding over the former president’s hush money trial in New York, according to court pool reports.   The prosecutors’ accusations came in a new motion asking for the court to include the Trump social media and campaign website posts in question in next week’s hearing on alleged gag order violations. Judge Juan Merchan earlier this week scheduled the hearing for next Tuesday in response to prosecutors’ Monday request that Trump be held in contempt of court for three earlier posts criticizing potential witnesses Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress whose silence about an alleged sex scandal Trump is accused of buying ahead of the 2016 election. “It’s ridiculous. It has to stop,” Christopher Conroy, a prosecutor in the Manhattan district attorney’s office, said Thursday, according to The New York Times. “I think it’s fair to say that Trump is determined to continue to leverage the legal proceedings against him to maintain his public persona and rally his …

Solana breaks 0 amid looming airdrop anticipation

Solana breaks $200 amid looming airdrop anticipation

Solana (SOL) briefly crossed the $200 mark on Sunday night, marking only the second time it has reached this threshold since 2021. This follows Solana decentralized exchange (DEX) volume recently overtaking the volume observed on Ethereum (ETH) DEXs. The rally was short-lived, as the cryptocurrency retreated to around $190 on Monday. To set a new all-time high, Solana would need to climb to approximately $260, according to data from CoinGecko. After months of stagnation following the collapse of FTX, Solana’s ecosystem has seen a resurgence in interest, driven by airdrops and memecoin speculation. The cross-chain messaging protocol Wormhole is set to release its W token, with a portion of the supply unlocking on the Solana blockchain. This anticipated airdrop has contributed to the increased activity on the network. Airdrop allocation farming has played a role in the steady growth of Solana’s DeFi ecosystem. The total value locked in Solana’s DeFi protocols has been on an upward trajectory since mid-November, currently sitting at around $4.6 billion, as reported by DeFiLlama. Solana has also experienced a significant …

The EU’s great green retreat benefits the far right. For the rest of us, it’s a looming disaster | Arthur Neslen

The EU’s great green deal cave-in has been nothing less than spectacular. As aggressive lobbying and violent farmers protests ramped up in the last year, Brussels has killed plans to cut pesticide use by half, to green farming practices, to ban toxic “forever” chemicals, to rein in livestock emissions and, last week, to restore nature to 20% of Europe’s land and seas. The aim may have been to create breathing space. Predictably, that hasn’t worked. The bloc’s anti-deforestation regulation seems likely to be the next green reform for the chop, with 20 agriculture ministers reportedly calling for it to be pared back and suspended on Monday, citing “administrative burdens”. Why is this happening? It is clear that centre-right parties fear an expected far-right insurgency in June’s parliamentary elections. But veteran observers also see a strategic bid to set a “brown” agenda for the next European Commission, in the same way that the Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion youth protests in 2018 set a green agenda for the current one. The difference, says Pieter de …

“She’s stacking the deck”: Ex-prosecutor says Jack Smith set to appeal Judge Cannon’s looming order

“She’s stacking the deck”: Ex-prosecutor says Jack Smith set to appeal Judge Cannon’s looming order

Special counsel Jack Smith is likely to appeal U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon’s order after she asked both sides to submit a set of jury instructions that may favor former President Donald Trump’s legally dubious defense in the classified documents case. Cannon last month ordered Smith and Trump to submit proposed jury instructions around competing interpretations of the Presidential Records Act. The PRA requires a president to turn over all documents to the National Archives at the end of the administration but Trump has argued it actually gives him the right to deem government materials as personal. Former New York Assistant Attorney General Adam Pollock predicted that Smith would submit the proposed jury instructions as required and wait to her Cannon’s determination. “Then he’ll have an appealable order,” Pollock told MSNBC on Sunday, adding that Smith may appeal before Cannon sets a trial date. “This is completely putting the cart before the horse,” he said. “The judge is signaling, as she has signaled from the get-go, that she doesn’t believe in this case, that she …

Europe must get ready for looming war, Donald Tusk warns | Poland

The Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, says Europe is entering a “prewar” era, cautioning that the continent is not ready and urging European countries to step up defence investment. In an interview with a group of European newspapers reported by the BBC, Tusk said: “I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept from the past. It’s real and it started over two years ago.” Tusk’s comments came days after a Russian missile briefly breached Polish airspace during a major attack on Ukraine, prompting Warsaw to put its forces on heightened readiness. Ukrainian officials have said large-scale Russian missile and drone attacks had targeted energy infrastructure. Tusk has been using his platform to try to add a sense of urgency to Europe’s debates about defence and aid to Ukraine, amid fears about the future of American assistance and concerns about defence industrial capacity. “True solidarity with Ukraine? Less words, more ammunition,” he wrote on social media earlier this month. In another post, he addressed Mike Johnson, the speaker of the US …

Wall Street stays stuck in neutral ahead of a looming inflation report

Wall Street stays stuck in neutral ahead of a looming inflation report

U.S. stock indexes held roughly in place Monday ahead of an inflation report that could show how realistic Wall Street’s hopes are for easier interest rates. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slipped 5.75 points, or 0.1%, to 5,117.94, coming off just its third losing week in the last 19. It’s still near its all-time high set Thursday, buoyed by expectations that cuts to interest rates are coming this year and by signals that the economy remains remarkably resilient. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 46.97 points, or 0.1%, to 38,769.66, and the Nasdaq composite fell 65.84 points, or 0.4%, to 16,019.27. Tuesday’s report on prices at the consumer level could show inflation remained at 3.1% in February, if economists’ forecasts are correct. A month ago, a hotter-than-expected report on inflation at the consumer level sent financial markets spinning after scrambling bets for when the Federal Reserve will start cutting rates. Stocks have already run higher and Treasury yields have eased in the bond market on expectations that such cuts are coming. But the trend …
