To whom does desire belong? How about love and care? These are the questions at the heart of “Disability Intimacy,” a new book of essays and ephemera collected by the San Francisco activist Alice Wong, and the answers are painfully obvious: Those human experiences are for everyone. What’s less obvious to many, and acutely painful to some of us, is that those questions needed to be asked and answered. This book needed to exist. It is a longstanding and unfortunate truth that disabled people are often seen as undesirable and even as unable to experience desire, love or care in the ways that all individuals do. As disabled people we understand how false that notion is and how harmful it can be. Giving and receiving love — physically or verbally, in a context of romance, sex, close friendship …

Oscars Bosses Announce A Long-Overdue New Category

After years of advocacy within Hollywood, the Oscars will at long last begin recognising casting at the Academy Awards, announcing a new prize for casting directors. The achievement in casting award will begin for films released in the 2025 calendar year, and will be awarded at the ceremony airing in early 2026. This is the first new category to be added to the awards show since 2001, when Best Animated Feature Film was introduced. “Casting directors play an essential role in filmmaking, and as the Academy evolves, we are proud to add casting to the disciplines that we recognise and celebrate,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in a joint statement on Thursday announcing the creation of the new award. Google Maps Still Working On Long-Overdue Live Activities Support

Google Maps continues to work on integrating Live Activities support for iPhones, according to new assets unearthed by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris in the latest version of the app. Evidence that the feature was in development first appeared in August, but further work on it had appeared to have come to a standstill until now, suggesting it could become functional soon. The Google Maps team announced in February 2023 that it would roll out Live Activities support “in the coming months,” so support is now long overdue based on the company’s own internal roadmap. When support rolls out, Google Maps users will be able to view turn-by-turn directions and their ETA in a single live-updating Lock Screen notification and in the Dynamic Island on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 series models. Apple opened up its Live Activities API to third-party iPhone apps with the release of iOS 16.1, and many developers have since made good use of the feature.
