US House approves long-awaited $61 billion Ukraine aid package

Lawmakers in the US House of Representatives on Saturday quickly passed legislation to provide military aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, and to ban TikTok if it fails to divest from its Chinese parent company. Issued on: 20/04/2024 – 19:59Modified: 21/04/2024 – 09:56 3 min The bills, passed in a rare Saturday session, were approved by overwhelming bipartisan votes, though they leave the future of House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, in doubt as he seeks to fend off angry far-right detractors.  Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the long-delayed aid package, saying the military and economic assistance would “save thousands and thousands of lives”.  I am grateful to the United States House of Representatives, both parties, and personally Speaker Mike Johnson for the decision that keeps history on the right track. More than two months have passed since the Democratic-majority Senate passed a similar measure and U.S. leaders from Democratic President Joe Biden to top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell have been urging embattled House Speaker Mike Johnson to bring it up for a vote. Johnson this week chose to ignore ouster threats by hardline members of his fractious 218-213 majority and push forward the measure that includes some $60.84 billion for Ukraine as it struggles to fight off a two-year Russian invasion. The unusual four-bill package also includes funds for Israel, security assistance for Taiwan and allies in the Indo-Pacific and a measure that includes sanctions, a threat to ban the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok and the potential transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine. “The world is watching what the Congress does,” the White House said …

California Sets Long-Awaited Drinking Water Limit for ‘Erin Brockovich’ Contaminant

California Sets Long-Awaited Drinking Water Limit for ‘Erin Brockovich’ Contaminant

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California regulators voted Wednesday to establish a drinking water limit on hexavalent chromium, a toxic chemical compound made infamous by the movie “Erin Brockovich.” The rule is the first in the nation to specifically target the heavy metal, known as chromium-6, and is expected to reduce the number of cancer and kidney disease cases from long-term ingestion, state officials say. The proposal was unanimously passed by the State Water Resources Control Board, though it needs approval from the Office of Administrative Law to take effect. The standard could inspire other states to adopt their own. More than 200 million Americans are estimated to have the chemical compound in their drinking water, according to an analysis of federal water testing data by the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit research and advocacy organization. Until now, California combined its drinking water standard for chromium-6 with the less toxic trivalent chromium, an essential nutrient. California’s new limit on chromium-6 is 10 parts per billion — about 10 drops of water in a swimming pool. “I …

In Northern Ireland, a long-awaited gurdwara opens with a wedding

In Northern Ireland, a long-awaited gurdwara opens with a wedding

LONDONDERRY, Northern Ireland (RNS) — On a cloudy fall day in 2021, about 100 people were praying in Derry’s only Sikh temple when smoke suddenly choked the prayer hall. Worshippers covered their mouths and noses and ran outdoors as flames consumed each room. Amerjit Singh, the president of the Northern Ireland Sikh Association, made sure that everyone was safely outside before running back inside the burning building to rescue the Sikh Holy Scripture known as the Guru Granth Sahib. On Thursday (April 11), after years of renovations — completed in the spirit of “sewa,” the Sikh principle of selfless service — the temple, known as a gurdwara, reopened with a joyful wedding celebration, welcoming worshippers of all faiths and backgrounds once again. The multistory beige building, resting on a sloping road near the eastern bank of the River Foyle, bears a long history: An old sign indicates it was constructed in 1915, and a newer one introduces it as the Sikh Cultural Centre established in 1995. Jimmy Singh, a longtime worshipper at the gurdwara, says …

“House of the Dragon” drops dueling “Black” and “Green” trailers for long-awaited second season

Are you team Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) or Alicent (Emma Cooke)? The new trailers for the HBO “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” preview a new season with the two lead characters on the brink of war, asking its audience to either pick Rhaenyra’s black squad or Alicent’s green team. The black trailer highlighted Rhaenrya, Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) and their army on Dragonstone, while the green put Alicent, her father Otto (Rhys Ifans) and her children, King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), at center stage in King’s Landing. The “GOT” prequel takes place nearly 200 years before the events of the original show. However, season two of “House of the Dragon” is shaping up to officially launch the Targaryen civil war. The highly anticipated second season is reported to pick up right where the first ended in season one with Aegon, Rhaenyra’s half-brother being crowned king of Westeros without her knowledge even though she was the chosen successor and views herself as the rightful heir to their father, the late King Viserys (Paddy …
