Two yobs, 11 and 12, went on rampage that killed more than 20 animals | UK | News

Two boys have been sentenced for animal cruelty after more than 20 animals were killed at a college. The youngsters, aged 11 and 12, had previously admitted causing £10,000 of criminal damage to property and unnecessary suffering to animals after rabbits, snakes and birds were killed in west London on February 24. Both were ordered to pay £200 in compensation, for which their parents will be liable, during their sentencing at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Youth Court on Thursday (April 18). Magistrate Lynn Green told the boys: “This is your crime, this is your punishment, not your parents. You must do something to pay them back… Whatever they ask you to do.” In the 30-minute hearing, Ms Green gave both boys a community sentence and told them they had only avoided time in prison because of their age and the fact they were not persistent offenders. She told them in her sentencing remarks: “It’s horrific what you’ve done, absolutely horrific.” Ms Green, referring to CCTV of the boys’ crimes, said: “We didn’t want to see the video. …

Incredible photos show car completely inside UK home after crashing through window | UK | News

Incredible photos have emerged showing a car completely inside the front room of a house after crashing through a window. The car, which appears to be a Honda, ploughed into the bedroom of an elderly woman, whose flat is reportedly on the ground floor of the property in Belmont Road, Twickenham, south west London. Local news website, Twickenham Nub News, said the vehicle smashed into the house last Wednesday evening (March 27). It said neighbours in the “quiet” cul-de-sac were left in “shock and disbelief” at what happened, which did not lead to any casualties. A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said firefighters responded to reports of a car in collision with the semi-detached property on Belmont Road, Twickenham. They added: “Two people left the vehicle before the Brigade arrived and were assessed by paramedics. Firefighters worked to make the scene safe before handing responsibility for the incident over to the police.” The Brigade was called at 6.06pm and the incident was over for crews by 7.10pm. Firefighters from Twickenham, Kingston and Heston Fire Station …

UK’s huge new £5bn tunnel finally finished but tourists will never be able to walk down it | UK | News

The construction of a £5billion tunnel in London has been completed after eight years – but you’ll never be able to walk down it. Thames Tideway Tunnel is a 25km-long super sewer designed to slash the level of sewage pollution along a section of the River Thames through central London. Tens of millions of tonnes of storm sewage spill into the river annually, but once operational the super sewer should reduce spills entirely, according to its backers. The final piece of the tunnel – a 1,200 tonne concrete lid – was lifted into place on top of a deep shaft at Abbey Mills Pumping Station in Stratford, east London, on Wednesday (March 27). Tideway has now built the full 15.5 miles (25km) main tunnel, a three mile (4.5km) connection tunnel in south east London and a 1,100m tunnel in south west London. The company’s Chief Exec Andy Mitchell said in a statement : “This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for. The underground civil engineering on the Tideway project is now complete following eight …

Dan Wootton challenged Jeremy Vine to condemn cyclists’ behaviour after the former GB News presenter said he was almost hit by riders speeding through red lights. Mr Wootton took to social media on Thursday (March 21) tagging the TV presenter and journalist in a tweet. It read: “Dear @theJeremyVine, today in London, as a pedestrian, I have nearly been hit by four separate cyclists going full speed through red lights. “Do you condemn this behaviour in the same manner in which you condemn drivers of cars?” Mr Vine tweeted in reply: “I condemn this behaviour.” Kelvin MacKenzie, a former editor of The Sun, shared Mr Wootton’s tweet, asking: “Why are these thugs on two wheels allowed to defy the law?” To which on X user claimed: “They need a licence and number plates. They are out of control.” As with motorists, cyclists have to obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals. They also shouldn’t cross the stop line when traffic lights are red. Met Police investigate Lee Anderson ‘hate speech’ allegation after Sadiq Khan comments | Politics | News

The Metropolitan Police said it is “assessing” a report of hate speech made against politician Lee Anderson by an unknown complainant. The Ashfield MP could face a police investigation linked to remarks regarding London Mayor Sadiq Khan he made last week during a GB News discussion. The report was filed the day after Mr Anderson’s comment, a spokesman for the Met Police said. The spokesman explained: “A report was made to police on Saturday February 24. Officers are assessing this report.” After the force complete their assessment, they could either escalate the case and launch a full investigation or dismiss it due to lack of substantial evidence. The comments made by Mr Anderson referred to a Daily Telegraph article penned by ex-Home Secretary Suella Braverman, in which she claimed Islamists “bullied the Labour Party” over its position on the war in Gaza between Hamas and Israel. The Fareham MP also said: “The truth is that the Islamists, the extremists and the antisemites are in charge now.” Commenting on her words, Mr Anderson said: “I don’t …

‘My £30k car was stolen – I tracked it on my phone and police told ME to go and get it’ | UK | News

A woman tracked her stolen £30k car using an app but claims police told her to pick it up – and officers would “meet her there”. Alexandra Vlad woke on the morning of February 6 to find her Lexus UX gone from her drive in Newham, East London. She immediately checked a tracking app on her phone and discovered the last location in Hackney – around six miles away. So Alexandra, 32, called the police and gave them all the information – but alleges she was then told to go there to get the car. She says the whole ordeal made her feel “unsafe”. Alexandra, who works in corporate finance, said: “I was more shaken by the experience of dealing with the police than the car being stolen itself. I told them what happened, and that I could see the last location of the engine. They told me they wouldn’t be there for at least an hour. It was a dodgy part of Hackney. I felt unsafe.” Alexandra says the police advised her to go …

London Underground map to be updated as six lines given brand new names and colours | UK | News

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the London Overground will be split into six different lines, each with a different name and brand new colour. Broadly, these are similar to the shades already used to denote separate London Underground lines on the iconic Tube map. But, the difference is that the new Overground sections are shown as two smaller parallel lines, much in the same way as the DLR is depicted on the famous London Underground map. The colours used will be grey, yellow, light blue, green, maroon and red. Officials say TfL will now start the process of rebranding the Overground, with the full roll out expected to be completed ‘in one go’ by the end of the year. This includes an updated Tube map, a ‘refreshed’ London Overground network map and a number of on-network assets, including way finding signage at all 113 stations. Last year, it was announced that Sadiq Khan had set aside £4m in TfL’s 2023-24 budget to look into the option of renaming the lines, which were previously known collectively as …
