Gary Lineker says ‘right time’ to leave Match Of The Day as he hints of changes to show’s format | Ents & Arts News

Gary Lineker has said it is “the right time” to leave Match Of The Day and hinted the BBC could change the format of the Premier League highlights show. The 63-year-old will step down as host at the end of the season and described his time on the show as an “absolute joy and privilege”. Speaking on his podcast, The Rest Is Football, he said: “It has been an absolute joy and privilege to present such an iconic show for the BBC. “But all things have to come to an end.” Lineker went on to say the broadcaster enters a new three-year deal to host top-flight highlights, and that to stay on for another 12 months “would be a bit weird”. “I think the next contract they’re looking to do Match Of The Day slightly differently, so I think it makes sense for someone else to take the helm. “I bowed out in my football career when I felt it was the right time. I feel this is now the right time.” Lineker refused to …

Lineker has hosted the Premier League highlights show since 1999, after his predecessor Des Lynam moved to ITV. Lineker was briefly removed from Match Of The Day in March 2023 following controversy over comments he made on social media criticising the then Conservative government’s asylum policies. Furious Jeremy Vine caller hits back at BBC licence fee rise with swipe at Gary Lineker | UK | News

A furious caller to Jeremy Vine on 5 has taken a swipe at Gary Lineker in a debate about whether richer people should pay more for a TV licence. Sarah from Surrey told the show she would scrap the fee, which she said was very outdated, claiming the BBC itself is a monopoly that needs overhauling. She then took aim at the amount the corporation pays presenters, saying: “They pay a very hard core of people extortionate amounts of money to present shows that – I pay my TV licence, I don’t want to watch Gary Lineker. They’re a monopoly and should move with the times.” The caller added: “I think they should stop considering themselves the creme de la creme.” TV presenter and Daily Express columnist Carole Malone said it makes her blood boil to see how much BBC Director-General Tim Davie earns. She said: “All of their executives are on stupid money. If you get sacked at the BBC it’s the best thing that can happen to you. You get a six figure …

Jewish journalist shaking with rage at Gary Lineker after she called him out | UK | News

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker left a Jewish journalist shaking with rage after she confronted him over the time he reposted a tweet calling for Israel to be banned from international football. The BBC host was told his social media posts on X made him appear like an “antisemite” – and he was asked to explain how his foray into the discourse around the Israel-Hamas war avoided breaching the broadcaster’s new social media guidelines, according to a first-hand account published in the Jewish Chronicle. Reporter Nicole Lampert told the former England goalscorer that she “thought he was behaving like an antisemite. His X feed only showed one side of the issue. He’d never once condemned Hamas on X or sent a message about the hostages.” She told the broadcaster: “I’m thinking about the women hostages who are probably still being raped.” Mr Lineker, who has fronted BBC sport’s programme’s for more than 20 years, retorted: “I’m thinking about the babies being killed. I just want peace.” Earlier, at the Broadcasting Press Guild lunch, …

He was referring to Newport’s Will Evans, who equalised against the Premier League side. He’s gone from farmer’s league to the big time in the FA Cup,” Lineker said. Bala Town issued Lineker an invitation on X to attend one of the club’s upcoming matches. “Happy to have Gary Lineker pop down to Maes Tegid one day to experience our ‘farmer’s league’,” the club said. Daniel Confino has been threatened with arrest by Met Police – David Rose, for the Telegraph A lawyer was allegedly threatened with arrest for driving a van with “Gary Lineker is Hamas’s bitch” emblazoned on the side. Daniel Confino, the son of a Holocaust survivor, says he was ordered to move on by officers while staging a protest outside the BBC’s London headquarters earlier this month. The red camper van had “BBC is Lineker’s pimp” written on the other side. The 65-year-old, who was in Israel on October 7 when Hamas fighters launched its devastating terror attacks from Gaza, was trying to protest against the BBC’s indulgence of its Match of the Day lead presenter. Lineker has called on the Israeli football team to be banned from tournaments.
