California residents can add their driver’s license to Apple & Google Wallet. Here’s how

California residents can add their driver’s license to Apple & Google Wallet. Here’s how

Artie Beaty/ZDNET If you’re a California resident, your digital wallet just got a little thicker. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that support for digital IDs will be rolling out in the coming weeks, meaning California residents can add their state IDs or California driver’s licenses to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Also: Nvidia will train 100,000 California residents on AI in a first-of-its-kind partnership Select Circle K locations will take the mobile version of your driver’s license, as will select apps and TSA screenings at San Francisco International Airport, San Jose Mineta International Airport, and Los Angeles International Airport. You’re still required to carry your physical license as required by law, but the digital version should make age of identity verification a lot faster.  A digital driver’s license copy isn’t exactly new territory for California, as it has its own CA DMV Wallet app that essentially does the same thing (500,000 of the state’s 39 million residents have enrolled in this app). What’s new is having your license in the same app you might use for, …

D.C. appeals court temporarily suspends ex-Trump lawyer’s law license

D.C. appeals court temporarily suspends ex-Trump lawyer’s law license

The D.C. Court of Appeals has temporarily suspended the law license of former President Trump’s ex-lawyer following a similar order made in late March by a California State Bar Court.  Former Trump attorney John Eastman’s license is suspended in D.C. pending a final disposition in the California court proceedings, chief judge of the D.C. Court of Appeals, Anna Blackburne-Rigsby, said in an order filed on Friday.  A California judge in late March recommended disbarring Eastman due to his “false and misleading statements” regarding his claims of 2020 election fraud and the role of “provoking” the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. State Bar Judge Yvette Roland also recommended that he pay $10,000 in monetary sanctions.  This week, Roland shut down Eastman’s request to remove the suspension of his license, stating on Wednesday he was not able to prove he’s not a “threat to the public.”  The California Supreme Court will give a ruling regarding the case which Eastman, Chapman Law School’s former dean, can appeal.  Roland, the California judge, found him guilty of 10 …

Why FT may be wrong to license its content for AI training

Why FT may be wrong to license its content for AI training

ChatGPT login and chatbot. Picture: Shutterstock The Financial Times has joined a growing group of newsbrands to have licensed its content for use by artificial intelligence pioneer OpenAI. It joins companies like Axel Springer, Le Monde and Associated Press in doing so. John Ridding, the FT’s CEO, points to a tension inherent in their deal. On the one hand, it positions the FT as a beneficiary, keeping it “at the forefront of developments in how people access and use information”. But he also acknowledges an underlying ethical concern. It’s right, he says, “that AI platforms pay publishers for the use of their material”. There are few media companies around right now who don’t welcome a bit of extra income. Mathias Dopfner, CEO of Axel Springer, has also recognised the tension in the relationship between AI and media. At last week’s INMA congress in London, while expressing optimism that AI can help media companies innovate and work better, he called for a new legal framework to protect intellectual property, with one conference delegate telling him his …

Ethiopian plastic upcycling startup Kubik gets fresh funding, plans to license out its tech

Ethiopian plastic upcycling startup Kubik gets fresh funding, plans to license out its tech

Kubik, a plastic upcycling startup, has raised a $1.9 million seed extension, months after announcing initial equity investment. The startup’s latest investment is from African Renaissance Partners, an East African venture capital firm; Endgame Capital, an investor with a bias for technologies around climate change; and King Philanthropies, a climate and extreme poverty investor. The fresh capital comes as the startup scales its operations in Ethiopia following the launch of its factory in Addis Ababa, where it is turning plastic waste into interlocking building materials like bricks, columns, beams and jambs. Kubik co-founder and CEO Kidus Asfaw, told TechCrunch that the startup intends to double down on its operations in Addis Ababa, as it lays ground for pan-African growth from 2025. Kubik’s approach involves upcycling plastic waste into “low-carbon, durable, and affordable” building materials using proprietary technology, which Asfaw says they will out-license for faster pan-African, and the eventual global growth. “What we want to do is solve problems for cities and so, we’re thinking about our business model being truly circular. The way we’ve …

Transgender Tennessee Woman Sues Over State’s Refusal to Change the Sex Designation on Her License

Transgender Tennessee Woman Sues Over State’s Refusal to Change the Sex Designation on Her License

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A transgender Tennessee woman sued the state’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security on Tuesday after officials refused to change the sex on her driver’s license to match her gender identity. The lawsuit was filed in Davidson County Chancery Court in Nashville under the pseudonym Jane Doe by the American Civil Liberties Union. It claims the department acted illegally by updating its policies without following the state’s Uniform Administrative Procedures Act, which requires public notice and public comment before an administrative rule is adopted. The department previously permitted a change to the sex designator on a Tennessee driver’s license with a statement from a doctor that “necessary medical procedures to accomplish the change in gender are complete,” according to the lawsuit. That policy changed after the legislature passed a law last year defining “sex” throughout Tennessee code as a person’s “immutable biological sex as determined by anatomy and genetics existing at the time of birth.” Shortly after the law went into effect, the department issued the new guidelines to employees on …
