Assisted dying: What is in the legislation? | Politics News

MPs will on Friday have to make one of the biggest decisions of their careers – whether or not to back assisted dying. The proposed law would make it legal for over-18s who are terminally ill to be given medical assistance to end their own life in England and Wales. Politics Live: No 10 denies reports of extra bank holiday next year The bill – called the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill – sets out detailed requirements in order to be eligible. The Labour MP proposing it, Kim Leadbeater, says the safeguards are the “most robust” in the world, but others argue it is a “slippery slope towards death on demand”. What is in the bill? The purpose of the bill is to allow adults aged 18 and over, who have mental capacity, are terminally ill and are in the final six months of their life, to request assistance from a doctor to die. This is subject to “safeguards and protections” which include: • They must have a “clear, settled and informed wish …

New research highlights need for legislation to close illegal schools

New research highlights need for legislation to close illegal schools

Counter-extremism think tank Nahamu has published a new Education Policy Position Paper in which it has argued that the UK Government needs to legislate to close loopholes in education law that enable illegal faith schools in England to continue to operate. The Government should also establish a register of home-educated children to make sure they are receiving an ‘adequate and appropriate education’. Thankfully the Government is proposing to do just that through its current Children’s Wellbeing Bill. Humanists UK has welcomed the Paper. Nahamu is an organisation that campaigns for better education for UK-based Charedi Jewish children. In its briefing paper it highlights how many Charedi boys are wholly unable to speak, write, or read English. Using testimony of former students and parents, it reports that this is because many Charedi boys attend unregistered, or illegal, schools, and receive no education in English, maths, or science beyond the age of 13. The briefing further states that parents make ‘spurious’ home education claims and ‘dishonest’ reports to Ofsted including providing ‘theoretical timetables’ and work that has …

Pennsylvania House Passes Bill Restricting How Social Media Companies Treat Minors

Pennsylvania House Passes Bill Restricting How Social Media Companies Treat Minors

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s state House of Representatives on Wednesday approved legislation aimed at regulating how online social media platforms interact with children, although its provisions are similar to those in state laws being blocked in federal courts or in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The bill passed nearly along party lines, 105-95, with 10 Republicans voting with most Democrats for it and seven Democrats voting with most Republicans against it. It faces an uncertain future in the Republican-controlled state Senate, and the nation’s highest court may soon decide whether state-level provisions like the ones in the bill can be enforced. The bill would require social media platforms to allow users to report “hateful conduct,” such as threats or bullying, and publicize a policy for how they will respond to such reports. It also would require users under 18 to get parental consent and bar the platforms from “data mining” users under 18, or sifting through their user data to find specific information or develop insight into patterns or habits. The sponsor, …

Gambling Legislation Remains Stalled in Session’s Closing Hours

Gambling Legislation Remains Stalled in Session’s Closing Hours

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Gambling legislation remains stalled in the Alabama Senate with members expressing doubt that it will get another vote in the closing hours of the legislative session. The session ends Thursday and supporters have been unable to break a stalemate in the state Senate after the measure initially failed by one vote last week. Supporters had hoped to get the bill back for another vote but said that seems increasingly unlikely to happen as the session winds down. “I think it’s dead, probably,” Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton said. Singleton was a member of the conference committee that had worked on the legislation. “They don’t have the appetite for bringing it up. Can’t get anybody to talk about it,” he said. Republican Rep. Chris Blackshear, the bill sponsor, said it looks like it would take a “miracle of Biblical proportion” to get the bill taken up in the Senate. “I just hope the senators that voted no and couldn’t get on board take time to drive around the state and see for …

GOP Secretary of State Who Spoke Out Against Election Denialism Wins JFK Profile in Courage Award

GOP Secretary of State Who Spoke Out Against Election Denialism Wins JFK Profile in Courage Award

Kentucky Republican Secretary of State Michael Adams, who worked to expand early voting in the Bluegrass State and has spoken out against election denialism in his own party, has been chosen to receive the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award this year. In its announcement Monday, the JFK Library Foundation said Adams was recognized “for expanding voting rights and standing up for free and fair elections despite party opposition and death threats from election deniers.” Adams — whose signature policy objective is to make it easy to vote and hard to cheat — was at the forefront of a bipartisan effort with Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear that led to the enactment of 2021 legislation allowing for three days of no-excuse, early in-person voting — including on a Saturday — before Election Day. Adams hailed it as Kentucky’s most significant election law update in more than a century. About one-fifth of the Kentuckians who voted in last year’s statewide election did so during those three days of early, in-person voting, Adams’ office said Monday. As …

Rotting Bodies and Fake Ashes Spur Colorado Lawmakers to Pass Funeral Home Regulations

Rotting Bodies and Fake Ashes Spur Colorado Lawmakers to Pass Funeral Home Regulations

DENVER (AP) — Colorado lawmakers passed a bill Monday to overhaul the state’s lax funeral home oversight, joining a second measure aimed at regulating the industry that passed last week. The cases have devastated hundreds of families. Many learned their child’s or parent’s remains weren’t in the ashes they received, but instead decaying sometimes for four years in a bug-infested building oftentimes stacked atop each other. The case turned a spotlight on the state’s funeral home regulations — some of the weakest in the nation. The bill passed Monday, which would require routine inspections of Colorado funeral homes, will head to Colorado Gov. Jared Polis’s desk for a signature after the House considers a minor change by the Senate. The legislation would also give regulators more enforcement power over funerals homes. The second bill, which is already headed to the governors’ desk, would require funeral directors and other industry roles to be licensed. Those qualifications would include background checks, degrees in mortuary science, passage of a national examination and work experience. Photos You Should See …

Alabama governor signs legislation to ensure Biden will appear on November ballot

Alabama governor signs legislation to ensure Biden will appear on November ballot

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Thursday signed into law legislation to ensure that President Joe Biden will appear on the state’s November ballot, a spokesperson confirmed. The Republican-controlled state House cleared the legislation earlier in the day in a 93-0 vote. The state Senate, which is also controlled by the GOP, passed it last month. Charles Lutvak, spokesperson for the Biden campaign, said in a statement to NBC News that Alabama “with full Republican support” is “already taking action to ensure that voters can exercise their right to vote for the candidate of their choice in November.” “Joe Biden will be on the ballot in all 50 states,” Lutvak said. “Election after election, states across the country have acted in line with the bipartisan consensus and taken the necessary steps to ensure the presidential nominees from both parties will be on the ballot. And this election is no different.” Republican secretaries of state in Alabama and Ohio had warned that Biden might not appear on the state’s general election ballots because the Democratic Party’s convention in …
