History, TV Portrayals, and Viking Legends

Ivar hinn Beinlausi, better known as Ivar the Boneless, is one of the most popular characters on the History Channel’s Vikings TV show. He is the brutal but crippled son of Ragnar Lodbrok who ruthlessly defies all expectations to become the ruler of Kattegat, but later burns all bridges with his family and finds himself in exile. But how closely does the Ivar portrayed on screen resemble the historical figure, and was he really a famous, crippled Viking warrior?   Who Was Ivar the Boneless? From Legends to Ballads: What Is Folklore?

From Legends to Ballads: What Is Folklore?

The study of folklore began in the 1770s with the German romantic nationalist Johann Gottfried Herder. The term itself was coined in the 1840s by William Thoms inspired by the German word Volklehre (“peoples customs”). Folklore refers to the stories, tales, music, dance, art forms, and traditions of a distinct community or group. It includes folk songs, myths, and legends but also architecture and fashion, values attitudes, and assumptions. Folklore connects people to their past, yet it doesn’t have to be ‘old.’ Today, folklore is continuously recreated in the rituals of everyday life, in the home, at work, and increasingly, on the internet.   The Role of Folklore The mythological Swedish Näcken serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of deep water, Source: Visitsweden.com   The term “folklore” conjures vivid and fantastical imagery: Robin Hood, the legendary English outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor; the Mexican Day of the Dead, a time when the souls of the dead are believed to reunite with the living on earth. How Magnus Maximus’ Forgotten Son Contributed to the Arthurian Legends

How Magnus Maximus’ Forgotten Son Contributed to the Arthurian Legends

It has been convincingly argued by several scholars that the usurpation of Magnus Maximus in the 4th century was the origin of the legend of King Arthur conquering Europe. However, Maximus himself does not appear to be the “Arthur figure” who serves as the protagonist of this legend. Rather, it appears that it was Andragathius, a cavalry commander in his army. But aside from the Arthurian legend itself, is there any trace of him being remembered within Welsh tradition?   Who Was Andragathius? Map of the Western Roman Empire, most of which was conquered for Magnus Maximus through Andragathius’ campaigns. Source: Wikimedia Commons   Andragathius was the cavalry commander of Magnus Maximus’ army. Roman sources inform us that Maximus gave him “the general direction of the war.” A number of his actions appear to be identifiable as the actions of Arthur in the legend of King Arthur’s European conquests. One example is that Andragathius was the one who pursued and personally killed Gratian, the Roman ruler of Gaul. This is precisely what Arthur does …

Cher Is Tipped For Glastonbury 2025 ‘Legends’ Slot – And Fans Have A Lot Of Feelings

While some fans might still be recuperating from this year’s Glastonbury, reports are already flying around about who’ll be performing on the Pyramid Stage in 2025. Pokemon Legends: Z-A is the second Legends title to make its way onto the scene and just like Pokemon Legends: Arceus, aims to offer a new take on a previously visited region. The Who review, Royal Albert Hall: Sixties legends prove themselves the most hardy and unworn act of their era

Sign up to Roisin O’Connor’s free weekly newsletter Now Hear This for the inside track on all things music Get our Now Hear This email for free “I didn’t know we were going to be playing Tommy,” Pete Townshend gripes at his sole remaining Who bandmate Roger Daltrey, bickering over the setlist like two old dears over a bingo bar tab. “I’ve got a list, but I can’t see it,” Daltrey replies, more genial grandpa than golden god at 80. As Daltrey fumbles the odd microphone twirl and Townshend misses his guitar entirely mid-windmill and complains that someone in the audience is remotely adjusting his app-controlled hearing aids, you wouldn’t trust The Who with their own pension books, let alone a computerised cold call. Rock history, though, is safe in their hands. When these enduring Sixties legends (Townshend: “I wrote all this s*** 50 years ago”; Daltrey: “F*** off!”) start playing their eighth show for the Teenage Cancer Trust – the annual week of gigs at the Albert Hall that Daltrey has been organising for …

Apex Legends: Hackers deploy cheats disrupting tournament

Hackers have targeted the esports final of online shooter game Apex Legends, causing significant disruption to the closing stages of the North American tournament. The competition was thrown into disarray after unwanted cheats were deployed in-game with clips shared by pro players, showing their consternation toward the outside interference. Apex Legends is a free-to-play, team-based battle royale shooter developed by EA-owned Respawn Entertainment, the studio synonymous with Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. As the action was unfolding, Apex pro player Noyan “Genburten” Ozkose announced his game was being hacked with cheats used on his profile. A video clip from the player’s Twitch livestream showed a cheat program’s settings menu appear, resulting in a frantic Genburten outburst, “I’m getting hacked, I’m getting hacked!” The malicious actors were witnessed repeatedly typing into the chat box from his account, “by Destroyer2009 & R4ndom” and “Apex hacking global series.” Another high-profile player, ImperialHal, shared a similar response to the experience of the cyber attack. Official reaction to the hack on Apex Legends A comment was made on the X account …
