Vince Vaughn, Bill Lawrence Reveal 3-Season Plan

Vince Vaughn, Bill Lawrence Reveal 3-Season Plan

[This story contains major spoilers from the season finale of Bad Monkey.] Back in the early 1990s, when they were still in their early-to-mid 20s, Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence met at a low-stakes poker game hosted by a mutual friend in Los Angeles. Vaughn had yet to rise to fame alongside Jon Favreau in the buddy comedy film Swingers, and Lawrence, then a standup comedian, was still years away from co-creating Spin City, the ABC sitcom that starred Michael J. Fox (in his final role before disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis) as the astute deputy mayor of New York City. Over the years, as their paths continued to cross at social events, Vaughn and Lawrence would keep tabs on each other’s progress. Vaughn became one of the most bankable stars of R-rated comedies in the late ’90s and 2000s, headlining box-office hits such as Wedding Crashers, Old School and Dodgeball. Lawrence established himself as one of the top showrunners in Hollywood, creating small-screen hits such as Scrubs, Cougar Town, Ted Lasso and Shrinking. But the …

Lawrence Frank calls Clippers season another ‘lost opportunity’

Lawrence Frank calls Clippers season another ‘lost opportunity’

The 2023-24 season ended in disappointment yet again for the Clippers and now they will turn their attention to next season and how they can reach their goal of winning an NBA championship with a core group that’s getting older. It’ll start with Lawrence Frank, the Clippers’ president of basketball operations, his front-office staff and owner Steve Ballmer having to make some decisions on the best path forward. The Clippers and Paul Gerorge were unable to reach a contract extension during the season, which means he can become a free agent if he opts out of a contract that would pay him $48.7 million next season. James Harden, who made $35 million this season and whom the Clippers acquired from the Philadelphia 76ers in October, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Russell Westbrook has a player option for next season of $4.027 million. Along with a healthy Kawhi Leonard, Frank said the team would like to bring back the entire group, along with giving Clippers coach Tyronn Lue an extension. First, the Clippers …

‘Bowie told me it’s OK to be messy’: the starry life and strife of singer-songwriter Lawrence Rothman | Music

Lawrence Rothman has lived a lot of lives: in the early aughts, they performed under the name Lillian Berlin in the ultra-political hard rock band Living Things. They’ve been a model, posing with Kate Moss in a 2008 Roberto Cavalli ad; and with their wife, Floria Sigismondi, director of The Runaways, in i-D magazine. Kim Gordon, Lucinda Williams and a pre-fame Billie Eilish are just some of their collaborators. And on their debut solo album, 2017’s The Book of Law, they explored nine alter egos, each with distinct personas and visual identities, through flamboyant, off-kilter pop. With the release of 2021’s Good Morning America, they switched gears into sun-scorched country, a mode that continues on their third album, The Plow That Broke the Plains: an intense, upsetting, starkly personal record. “To bear things inside of myself that are uncomfortable, it felt weirdly easier for me to do it in a singer-songwriter setting,” they say. “In an experimental setting, the lyric is hidden in math, and you haven’t purged it from yourself. I had a lot …

Met’s handling of new evidence about Stephen Lawrence case to be reviewed | Doreen Lawrence

Met’s handling of new evidence about Stephen Lawrence case to be reviewed | Doreen Lawrence

An independent police force will review the Metropolitan police’s handling of new evidence relating to the murder of Stephen Lawrence 30 years after his death, the mayor of London has said. It comes after the Met commissioner, Mark Rowley, apologised to Stephen’s mother, Doreen Lawrence, for not fulfilling a promise to answer questions stemming from a BBC investigation into the murder of the 18-year-old in 1993. The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said that the Lawrence family had been “let down” by the police and that Rowley would be asking a separate force to review the Met’s handling of “fresh evidence”. The BBC said Lady Lawrence was promised an explanation after the broadcaster named Matthew White as the sixth suspect in the case last year. Met chief apologises to Stephen Lawrence’s mother over handling of sixth suspect | Stephen Lawrence

The Metropolitan police commissioner has apologised to the mother of Stephen Lawrence for not fulfilling a promise to explain why his force failed to properly handle evidence against one of the suspects in the teenager’s murder. A BBC investigation in 2023 identified Matthew White as the sixth suspect in the case, where only five had previously been known. The broadcaster said Doreen Lawrence had been promised answers to her questions about the way police handled the investigation. Despite initial correspondence with the deputy assistant commissioner Matt Ward, none has been given. The Met commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, has now apologised, saying: “On top of the failures over the decades, this is totally unacceptable.” Stephen Lawrence was murdered in April 1993 by a racist gang in Eltham, south-east London, as he ran to catch a bus with his friend Duwayne Brooks. Only two of the 18-year-old’s killers – Gary Dobson and David Norris – have been brought to justice. The original investigation into his death was hampered by institutional racism in Scotland Yard and claims corrupt …

‘Why the silence? Why the inaction? It breaks my heart’: Malala and Jennifer Lawrence take on the Taliban | Documentary films

‘Why the silence? Why the inaction? It breaks my heart’: Malala and Jennifer Lawrence take on the Taliban | Documentary films

“Strong women are not easy women,” says Jennifer Lawrence, “and a woman’s life is lonely. So much of our experience cannot be shared or understood by men, and our rights are in their hands. That’s why we need each other.” The two other people on our video call nod in agreement. One is Malala Yousafzai, who, with Lawrence, has produced a new documentary about the oppression of Afghan women by the Taliban after US troops withdrew in 2021. The other is Sahra Mani, who directed it. Bread & Roses is also a story of three women. Sharifa incarcerates herself at home in accordance with new laws that ban women from school, work or going out other than in certain chaperoned circumstances, wearing full-body coverings. Zahra is a dentist whose activism lands her in jail. Taranom seeks refuge in Pakistan and mourns her homeland. “Strong women are always lonely women,” she says near the end of the film, bereft. No arguing with that today. “That’s why we’re here,” says Malala. “Because it is a lonely journey, …
