Lucy Letby latest as lawyers to challenge nurse’s sentence within weeks | UK | News

Lucy Letby’s lawyers will challenge her sentence at the Court of Appeal in a matter of weeks. The jailed nurse’s bid to appeal her whole life order sentence will be heard in court on April 25, a spokesperson for the judiciary has confirmed. The 34-year-old, who worked at the Countess of Cheseter Hospital’s neonatal unit, first applied to challenge her sentence last month but it was refused by a judge. Her current sentence dictates that she will spend the rest of her life life behind bars. However, Letby who was sentenced to 14 whole life orders after she was convicted of the murders of seven babies and the attempted murders of six others, will be allowed to renew her efforts before a panel of three judges at the hearing in two months’ time. During Lucy Letby’s trial at Manchester Crown Court, a jury was unable to reach verdicts on six counts of attempted murder including two alleged attempts on the same baby’s life, and as a result will face a retrial in June on a single …

Score and latest updates from day one of fourth Test

Score and latest updates from day one of fourth Test

Good morning and welcome fellow early risers or both-end candle-burners to the first day of the fourth India vs England Test from Ranchi. Over the course of the series we seem to have flipped from ‘Bazball vincit mundum’ to hang Joe Root’ in little more than three weeks, optimism and equanimity replaced by exasperation and contempt. England have incited joy and rage in equal measure over the past 40 years and even though Ben Stokes, Brendon McCullum and Robert Key have transformed a Test side that looked lost and hopeless in the Caribbean in early 2022 following their dismal Ashes campaign into one that given this observer more moments of genuine, gob-smacking pleasure over the course of two years than any other, we still cannot resist rushing to judgment mid-series. Not that the players are listening to the condemnation but premature adjudication is still a curse and if they fail in India, I can assure you having sat through miserable nights on subcontinental tours in 2016 and 2021, they have at least had a go …

Don’t underestimate the significance of the latest moon landing | Science & Tech News

Don’t underestimate the significance of the latest moon landing | Science & Tech News

Don’t underestimate the significance of this latest moon landing. The first by the US in more than 50 years, the first by a private company and the first so close to the intriguing south pole. Many other nations have landed during America’s absence: Russia, China, India and most recently Japan. The US is a late runner in the new dash to the moon. When America was last there it was with the Apollo programme, which employed 500,000 people and consumed 2.5% of GDP annually for a decade. NASA is sending humans back, perhaps in as little as two years. But this time it needs to do it cheaper. That’s where private companies come in. The latest landing was by Texas-based Intuitive Machines, which was paid $118million (£94million) to take a payload of scientific instruments. Image: Computer animation. Pic: NASA That’s a bargain for NASA, and a challenge for the company, which has had to innovate with 3D-printed rocket engines and other technology to keep costs down. Innovation by companies like Space X and Blue Origin …

Librarians Could Be Prosecuted in the Right’s Latest Anti-Education Crusade

Librarians Could Be Prosecuted in the Right’s Latest Anti-Education Crusade

It seems that mere book bans no longer provide the feverish culture-war buzz some Republicans crave. GOP lawmakers in several states are instead escalating matters by laying the groundwork for the prosecution of librarians. Last week, the West Virginia House of Delegates passed a bill that would remove protections from criminal liability for schools, public libraries, and museums that distribute or display “obscene matter” to a minor, when the minor’s parent or guardian is not present. Those found guilty of violating the law could receive fines of up to $25,000 and face up to five years in prison. Supported by all 85 of the state’s House Republican members and now up for consideration in the GOP-controlled Senate, House Bill 4654 is short on specifics. What constitutes obscenity, according to the West Virginia state code, includes material that “an average person, applying community standards, would find depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexually explicit conduct; and a reasonable person would find, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.” But …

Latest updates from Bahrain with Lewis Hamilton in action

Latest updates from Bahrain with Lewis Hamilton in action

Welcome to our live coverage of day of Formula One pre-season testing in Bahrain. Day one of testing is always interesting in some regard as we get to see the “proper” cars for the first time, away from the launch-spec models with things that the teams try to hide or with updates that merely have not been created yet.  It was certainly worth watching to see in closer in detail Red Bull and Mercedes, in any case. Despite winning all but one of the races last season, Red Bull’s RB20 has taken a pretty big step when it comes to design. And their performance yesterday was rightly labelled ‘ominous’.  Of course, there is a limited amount we can learn from outright lap times in testing but there is not nothing. Max Verstappen topped the timesheets by 1.1sec from McLaren’s Lando Norris and clocked in an enormous 143 laps over the day. That time will not be due to low-fuel glory runs, that is for sure. And for most of the day the car looked glued …

Hivemapper reveals new Bee dashcam as its latest weapon against Google’s map dominance

Hivemapper reveals new Bee dashcam as its latest weapon against Google’s map dominance

Mapping startup Hivemapper will launch a new dashcam later this year that its co-founder believes will speed up efforts to claw market share away from Google. The new Hivemapper Bee camera, revealed Wednesday, is part of the company’s years-long push to decentralize mapping and make map data more affordable and accessible. Hivemapper also hopes the camera will help it expand beyond its core customer base of ride-hail and delivery drivers to more owners of corporate fleets, potentially supercharging its ability to capture fresher, more valuable mapping data. The company has already made notable progress using data captured from its previous dashcam models mounted in the cars of thousands of ride-hail and delivery drivers. Hivemapper announced, in conjunction with the new camera, that its community of contributors have mapped 8 million kilometers (5 million miles) of roads worldwide in 16 months — a milestone reached four times faster than it took Google to cross with Street View, according to the company. Hivemapper has said it wants to cross 10 million kilometers by early 2024, and tells …
