What Makes You Love Doing Philosophy?

What Makes You Love Doing Philosophy?

Whenever I meet someone who has been studying philosophy much longer than I have, I always ask the same question: How has your love for philosophy changed over time? What motivates you to continue your philosophical work? I want to reflect on my journey in understanding my relationship with philosophy—a journey of love and hate. After starting my Ph.D. program, these questions became my primary focus—especially after I lost my interest in philosophy and wanted to rekindle it. It felt incredibly absurd to me: I had just landed a (sort of) dream job after a year of preparation and moved to a new country to pursue my career, yet I had lost my appetite and motivation to work. How could this be? I was desperate to reignite my love for philosophy. So, my life in the graduate program became a journey to find motivation. For a long time, I had an almost obsessive affection for philosophy. I’m not sure how exactly this passion started, but ever since my teenage years, I believed I had to …

Defender Kim out of South Korea squad with Achilles tendon injury

Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae has been dropped from the South Korea squad ahead of their home World Cup qualifiers against Oman and Jordan due to an Achilles tendon injury, the Korean Football Association said on Saturday. The 28-year-old was named in coach Hong Myung-bo’s 28-man squad on Monday but has been cut after developing inflammation in his Achilles tendon. He will also miss Bayern’s Bundesliga game at Union Berlin later on Saturday. “We decided Kim Min-jae would need to take time to receive treatment on his left Achilles tendonitis and rehab during the international break,” the KFA told local media. “We will decide later whether a replacement player will be called up.” With Kim sidelined, the squad are left with three centre back options, Cho Yu-min (Sharjah), Jung Seung-hyun (Al-Wasl) and Kwon Kyung-won (Khor Fakkan). South Korea could secure one of the two automatic tickets to the 2026 finals from Group B with two qualifiers to spare if they beat Oman in Goyang on March 20 and Jordan in Suwon five days later. South Korea requests exclusion from US plan to increase tariffs

South Korea requests exclusion from US plan to increase tariffs

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA —  South Korean officials have asked the Trump administration to exclude their country from U.S. plans to impose aggressive tariffs on trade partners, emphasizing that Seoul is already applying low duties on American products under the free trade agreement between the two nations. South Korea’s government on Friday said Deputy Trade Minister Park Jong-won made the request while traveling to Washington this week for meetings with unspecified officials from the White House, the Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The South Korean Trade Ministry didn’t say what Park heard from the Americans. Park cited how South Korean companies were contributing to the U.S. economy through large-scale business investments and noted that the country was already imposing low duties on free trade partners such as the United States. He called for South Korea to be excluded from U.S. plans to establish reciprocal tariffs with trade partners and raise duties for imported steel and aluminum, the ministry said. South Korea’s top economic think tank this month slashed its growth …

South Korea suspends new downloads of DeepSeek, citing privacy concerns

South Korea suspends new downloads of DeepSeek, citing privacy concerns

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea’s data protection authority said Monday that new downloads of the Chinese AI app DeepSeek had been suspended in the country after DeepSeek acknowledged failing to take into account some of the agency’s rules on protecting personal data. The service of the app will be resumed once improvements are made in accordance with the country’s privacy law, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) said in a media briefing. The measure that came into force on Saturday aims to block new downloads of the app, the agency said, though DeepSeek’s web service remains accessible in the country. The Chinese startup appointed legal representatives last week in South Korea and had acknowledged partially neglecting considerations of the country’s data protection law, the PIPC said. Italy’s data protection authority, the Garante, said last month it had ordered DeepSeek to block its chatbot in the country after failing to address the regulator’s concerns over its privacy policy. DeepSeek did not immediately respond to a request for comment. When asked about earlier moves by South Korean government departments to block DeepSeek, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson told …

Teacher questioned in stabbing death of first-grader in South Korea

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA —  South Korean police on Tuesday were questioning an elementary school teacher who allegedly stabbed a first-grader to death in the city of Daejeon. The killing on Monday during after-school care has shocked the nation and prompted the country’s acting president to order school safety standards reviewed. The female suspect was receiving medical treatment for self-inflicted wounds following the death of the girl in an audio-visual room on the second floor of the school, said Yuk Jong-myeong, chief of Daejeon’s western district police station. The suspect, reported to be in her 40s, told police that she had recently returned to work after a period of leave for health reasons, Yuk said. She told police she has received treatment for depression since 2018. After the first-grade student was reported missing at 5:15 p.m. local time Monday, police and family members searched throughout the school and surrounding areas. Her grandmother found her in the audio-visual room around 5:50 p.m. The girl was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Choi Sang-mok, who …

English words have invaded Korea. The government is fighting back

SEOUL — Kim Hyeong-bae, a South Korean linguist, had a problem: how to translate the word “deepfake” into Korean. A senior researcher at the National Institute of Korean Language, a government regulator, Kim works in the public language department. His job is to sift through the many foreign words that clutter everyday speech and bring them to the committee — called the “new language group” — to be translated into Korean. ”Deepfake,” which is pronounced dihp-PAY-kuh and has been appearing in newspaper headlines with increasing frequency, was a textbook candidate. 1 2 3 1. South Korea opposition push to impeach president

Senior aides to Yoon offered to resign en masse, as did the defence minister, who said he took “full responsibility for the confusion and concern” around the martial law declaration. Yoon has yet to publicly reappear. The repeal of martial law prompted jubilation among flag-waving protesters outside parliament. As night fell in Seoul Wednesday, protesters again demanded Yoon step down. “I was so incensed I couldn’t sleep a wink last night, I came out to make sure we push out Yoon once and for all,” 50-year-old Kim Min-ho told AFP. Biden meets South Korea, Japan leaders for pre-Trump huddle on risk

Biden meets South Korea, Japan leaders for pre-Trump huddle on risk

LIMA: US President Joe Biden met with Japanese and South Korean leaders on Friday (Nov 15) as they sought to cement their diplomatic progress ahead of a new Trump administration that many fear could upend alliances worldwide. The meeting between Washington and two of its closest Asian allies came as US relations with Beijing are expected to grow more confrontational after Donald Trump’s Jan 20 inauguration, given his promises of sharp tariff hikes that could hobble China’s economy. North Korea’s deployment of troops to Russia to support Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as North Korea’s nuclear weapons program and dimming prospects for a peaceful resolution to a decades-long conflict with South Korea are also raising tensions in Asia. “Japan, the ROK, and the United States strongly condemn the decisions by the leaders of the DPRK and Russia to dangerously expand Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine,” said a joint statement, referring to South Korea and North Korea by their official names, the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The meeting on …

Exhibitions to See in Seoul, Korea during Frieze

As the third edition of Frieze Seoul heads into its final day today, many international visitors are likely already on their way home. Uber drives deeper into South Korea to take on Kakao Mobility

Uber drives deeper into South Korea to take on Kakao Mobility

After seeing double-digit growth in South Korea, Uber Technologies has announced a strategic plan to double down in the country — directly challenging market leader Kakao Mobility, the ride-hailing unit majority-owned South Korean messaging and tech giant Kakao. Uber chief executive officer Dara Khosrowshahi outlined the plans in a press conference in Seoul, where he also kicked off a campaign to grow the company’s pool of drivers in the country. That will need to be a major effort. Currently Korea’s ridehailing indstury is dominated by Kakao Taxi, Kakao Mobility’s consumer service, with more than 23 million registered users and a 98% market share, per Statista. Khosrowshahi also added that Uber plans to expand its partnerships with Korean car technology companies, just as it has done in other markets. It’s been especially active on that front recently. Last week, Cruise, General Motors’s self-driving subsidiary, signed a multi-year partnership with Uber to bring its robotaxis to the ride-hailing platform in 2025. Uber announced this week it had made a strategic investment in Wayve, a U.K.-based startup that …
