iOS 18.2 was killing my iPhone’s battery until I turned off this feature

iOS 18.2 was killing my iPhone’s battery until I turned off this feature

Kerry Wan/ZDNET It’s impossible not to notice how bad my iPhone’s battery life has become since upgrading to iOS 18; it only got progressively worse with iOS 18.1 and 18.2. It’s the rare day that my battery is still above 40% by lunchtime, and power banks have become constant companions in my life.  The situation was bad (night or day), battery consumption was much higher than anything I remember, and even Low Power Mode didn’t offer much relief. It was time to investigate the problem. Also: iOS 18.2 update triggers eruption of iPhone battery life complaints – what to know However, I wasn’t optimistic about finding a solution or even a workaround. Recently, the only remedy for such issues has been to wait for Apple to patch the problem. But given that I’ve watched this issue go from bad to worse over the past few months, I’m not holding my breath. So I decided to investigate. For any battery drain issue, the first place I always look is under the Battery screen in Settings. This …

Experts Alarmed by Huge Wall at Airport That Jet Crashed Into, Killing 179 Passengers

Experts Alarmed by Huge Wall at Airport That Jet Crashed Into, Killing 179 Passengers

“Normally, on an airport with a runway at the end, you don’t have a wall.” Localizer Tragedy In South Korea, a jet quite literally crashed and burned when it hit a wall that was placed at the end of an airport runway, killing 179 passengers. As the BBC reports, the pilot of the Jeju Air plane reported to the control tower at Muan International Airport that the Boeing 787-800 jet had struck a bird and needed to make an emergency landing. Despite failing to deploy its wheels and other gear, the emergency landing was looking okay — until the plane crashed into the concrete structure atop a dirt embankment at the end of the runway. That wall held a navigational system called a localizer that’s meant, ironically, to help planes land safely. While localizer structures are common at airports, they’re generally not supposed to be placed at the end of runways like the one at Muan, experts told the BBC. Air safety specialist David Learmont told the broadcaster that if the “obstruction,” as he called the localizer …

There’s a Scandal Growing About That Paper About How Black Spatulas Are Killing You

There’s a Scandal Growing About That Paper About How Black Spatulas Are Killing You

Image by Getty / Futurism Remember that huge panic around black spatulas? It turns out that the whole thing may have just been a crock of crap. A study published in October contended that kitchenware made of black plastics, and especially utensils like spatulas, contained alarmingly high amounts of toxic flame retardants due to the recycled materials they were sourced from. It almost immediately caused a major scare, and articles published everywhere from The New York Times to CNN recommended throwing these ubiquitous plastic items out in favor of safer alternatives. But after some scientists questioned the research, the editors of the journal that the study was published in, Chemosphere, issued a correction over the weekend clarifying that the toxic levels indicated by the work were, in a nutshell, wrong; a simple math error was behind the startling, but now seemingly debunked, claim. The work, conducted by researchers at the advocacy group Toxic-Free Future, examined over two hundred black plastic household products, roughly half of which were utensils, to see if they contained brominated flame …

A timeline of the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killing and suspect’s known movements

The person being sought in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Manhattan street was seen near a Port Authority bus station 46 minutes after the shocking crime, police said. Thompson was shot from behind outside of the New York Hilton Midtown hotel Wednesday morning as he was on his way to UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference, officials have said. No arrests have been made. Police believe the person of interest may have left the city. “At this point, we believe he acted alone,” New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Friday. The man arrived by bus and stayed at a hostel, and roommates said he kept his mask on the entire time, even while eating, only pulling it down to take a bite. Here is a timeline of the person of interest’s movements in New York City, as described by Kenny. He said video confirmed the man’s movements. Sunday, Nov. 24 10:11 p.m.: The person arrives in New York City. He is seen on video at that time getting off a …

Yasin Ozturk | Anadolu Agency | Getty Images Billionaire and public health advocate Mike Bloomberg on Tuesday excoriated Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. health secretary, over his anti-vaccine record and urged the Senate to reject his bid to lead the nation’s top health agencies. “Just imagine if RFK Jr. had been in office during Trump’s first term,” Bloomberg said at the Bloomberg American Health Summit in Washington D.C. “Would Operation Warp Speed have even happened? And if it did, how long would the vaccines have been delayed? How many fewer people would have gotten the shot? How many more people would have died?” “All we can say for sure is this: It would have made Covid even more deadly and even more economically painful,” he said. Giving RFK Jr. the power to steer U.S. health policy, he warned, would be “beyond dangerous, it would be …

Husband reveals wife’s final words as drink-driver jailed for killing her on wedding day

Husband reveals wife’s final words as drink-driver jailed for killing her on wedding day

A bride who was killed by a drink-driver on the day of her wedding told her new husband moments before the crash that she “didn’t want the night to end”. Samantha Miller, 34, died still wearing her wedding dress, while groom Aric Hutchinson suffered a brain injury and numerous broken bones when Jamie Lee Komoroski smashed into the golf cart the couple had been riding in after their beach ceremony. Komoroski, 27, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the 2023 crash in South Carolina. Charleston County Courthouse heard how Komoroski had been drinking at several bars and was more than three times the legal limit. She was also said to be driving at 65mph on the 25mph narrow Folly Beach road. Mr Hutchinson cried in court as he recalled the last moments he spent with his wife. He said: “On the golf cart, she told me she didn’t want the night to end and I kissed her on the forehead and then the next thing I remember is waking up in the …

Three sentenced to death in Iran over killing of top nuclear scientist | News

Three suspects are accused of involvement in the murder of scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh and spying for Israel. Iran’s judiciary says three people have been sentenced to death after a court found them guilty of spying for Israel and involvement in the killing of a top nuclear scientist. Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed when his car was ambushed on a highway outside the capital in November 2020. “The preliminary legal proceedings took place in Urmia, where these individuals were sentenced to execution; the case is currently in the appeals process,” Asghar Jahangir, spokesman of the Iranian judiciary, told a news conference in Tehran on Tuesday. “After some investigations, three people out of eight arrested in West Azarbaijan province, were accused of committing espionage for the occupying regime of Israel,” Jahangir said. He added that the three are also “accused of transporting equipment into Iran for the assassination of martyr Fakhrizadeh under the guise of smuggling alcoholic beverages”. The decision came following a “comprehensive investigation”, the Iranian official said, adding that charges against four other suspects are under …

Harris defends border record, rips Trump for killing bipartisan bill

Harris defends border record, rips Trump for killing bipartisan bill

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in a new interview Thursday defended her vice presidential record on immigration and blamed her Republican rival Donald Trump for killing a bipartisan bill aimed to address the U.S.-Mexico border. Harris said her work to address the root causes of U.S. migration from the so-called Northern Triangle “has actually resulted in a number of benefits, including historic investments by American businesses in that region.” “The number of immigrants coming from that region has actually reduced since we began that work,” she told CNN anchor Dana Bash in her first sit-down interview since becoming the Democratic nominee. Harris said that she and President Joe Biden, who dropped his reelection bid in July, had worked with Congress to craft a bipartisan bill that would have helped secure the border. “Donald Trump got word of this bill that would have contributed to securing our border,” Harris said, “and because he believed that it would not have helped him politically, he told his folks in Congress, ‘Don’t put it forward.’” “He killed the bill, …

What I See in the Video of Sonya Massey’s Killing

What I See in the Video of Sonya Massey’s Killing

Let me tell you what I see and hear in the video of Sonya Massey’s killing: A nervous woman, head tilted down toward her phone, as if hoping someone—maybe a family member—has replied to her messages. A shaky voice wanting to hear words of reassurance. “You didn’t see anybody?” she asks the two law-enforcement officers who were sent to her house after she had called 911 to report what she thought was an intruder. “We checked the whole area,” one of the officers tells her. “Okay,” she says in a whisper. When one of the officers, Deputy Sean Grayson, speaks again, he sounds suspicious: “What took you so long to answer the door?” He doesn’t assume that she must be afraid, which is why she dialed 911 in the first place. Instead, he sounds like he’s interrogating her. In another story, she might be the damsel in distress, but Black women are hardly ever seen that way. Still, she addresses him respectfully, to indicate that she understands his position of authority: “Oh, I was trying …
