‘Obsessed’ security guard hatched plan to kidnap, rape and murder Holly Willoughby, court told | UK News

An “obsessed” security guard plotted to break into Holly Willoughby’s family home and knock her out with chloroform so he could kidnap, rape and murder her, a court has heard. Gavin Plumb, 37, allegedly hatched the “graphic” and “sexually motivated” plans over more than two years as he tried to recruit accomplices online. Chelmsford Crown Court heard he boasted of trying to abduct two air hostesses from trains and falsely imprisoning two 16-year-old girls to “bolster his credibility”. Killing Willoughby was suspect’s ‘ultimate fantasy’, court told | Trial as it happened Prosecutors allege his past convictions – which included tying a teenager’s hands behind her back with rope and tape, and using an imitation firearm – showed he knew “what it would take to terrify and overpower a woman”. But Plumb, from Harlow, in Essex, unwittingly disclosed his plans to an undercover US police officer, who alerted the authorities in the UK and disrupted his plans to carry out “catastrophic violence” against Willoughby, the court heard. ‘Suspected jihadists’ kidnap over 110 civilians

Suspected jihadists in central Mali are holding more than 110 civilians they abducted six days ago, local sources told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Monday, April 22. Three buses carrying the civilians were stopped on April 16 by “jihadists,” who forced the vehicles and the passengers to head towards a forest between Bandiagara and Bankass, a local group of associations and an elected official said. “We demand the release of more than 110 passengers of three buses abducted on Tuesday by jihadists,” a member of the group, Oumar Ongoiba, told Agence France-Presse (AFP). An elected official from Bandiagara, who wanted to remain anonymous for security reasons, said, “The three buses and the passengers, more than 120, are still being held by jihadists.” Mali has since 2012 been ravaged by different factions affiliated to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group, as well as by self-declared, self-defence forces and bandits. The worsening security situation has been compounded by a humanitarian and political crisis. The violence spilled over into neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger, with all three countries seeing …

Nigerian woman rescued 10 years after kidnap by Boko Haram in Chibok | Nigeria

Nigerian woman rescued 10 years after kidnap by Boko Haram in Chibok | Nigeria

Nigerian troops have rescued a pregnant woman and her three children 10 years after she was abducted by Boko Haram militants when she was a schoolgirl in the town of Chibok. Lydia Simon was rescued in Gwoza council area, about 95 miles (150km) east of Chibok, from where 276 schoolgirls were seized in April 2014. As many as 82 are still missing a decade after the high-profile mass kidnapping. Announcing the news on Thursday, the Nigerian army did not give details of the rescue other than to say Simon was found in the community of Ngoshe. Chibok and Ngoshe are in Borno state, birthplace of the 15-year old insurgency that has since spread to neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger, uprooting about 2 million people across the region. The army statement said Simon was five months pregnant. It was accompanied by a picture of her and her three children born in captivity, who appear to be between the ages of two and four. She has yet to be reunited with her family. Lydia Simon with her …

In crime-stricken Haiti, Catholic priests and nuns are targeted as kidnap victims

In crime-stricken Haiti, Catholic priests and nuns are targeted as kidnap victims

SÃO PAULO, Brazil — As criminal organizations extend their control over Haiti, kidnappings have continued to terrorize the country’s residents, with Catholic priests and other missionaries becoming some of the most common targets. In 2024 alone, at least 14 priests and religious brothers and sisters are being held. Over the past three years, since President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated and criminal gangs began to take over the capital city, Port-au-Prince, kidnappers have focused on the country’s few higher-income professionals and those they believe will be able to secure large ransoms. In impoverished Haiti, that includes clergy and religious.  A nun who was abducted along with two other sisters in early March told Religion News Service that the gang requested a ransom of $2 million. “It was completely impossible to raise that kind of money,” said the nun, who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons.  The bandits ended up freeing the nuns after one day without receiving any money, coming away only with two cars they had stolen to transport their victims. “The ransom requested …

Gunmen in Nigeria kidnap at least 87 people in new attack | Crime News

The attack comes days after an armed gang seizes 286 students and staff from a school. Gunmen in Nigeria have kidnapped at least 87 people in a new attack, residents and police say, after an armed gang seized 286 students and staff from a school earlier this month. Officials on Monday said the attack took place in the Kajuru area of Kaduna state and the abducted included women and children. Bandits routinely loot villages and carry out mass kidnappings for ransom in northwest and north-central Nigeria, where the violence has displaced about one million people, according to the United Nations. Authorities have seemed powerless to stop the near-daily attacks, piling pressure on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. On Monday, Kaduna police spokesperson Mansur Hassan said the Kajuru incident happened on Sunday night, adding that security agents have been deployed to rescue the villagers. “They went and removed people from their homes at gunpoint,” local official Ibrahim Gajere told the Agence France-Presse news agency. Residents said armed men dressed in army uniforms arrived in the village undetected …

Gunmen kidnap 15 children in yet another school abduction in northern Nigeria

Gunmen kidnap 15 children in yet another school abduction in northern Nigeria

ABUJA, Nigeria — Armed men broke into a boarding school in northwestern Nigeria early Saturday and seized 15 children as they slept, police told The Associated Press, about 48 hours after nearly 300 students were taken hostage in the conflict-hit region. School abductions are common in Nigeria’s northern region, especially since the 2014 kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls by Islamic extremists in Borno state’s Chibok village shocked the world. Armed gangs have since targeted schools for kidnap ransoms, resulting in at least 1,400 abducted since then. The gunmen in the latest attack invaded the Gidan Bakuso village of the Gada council area in Sokoto state at about 1 a.m. local time, police said. They headed to the Islamic school where they seized the children from their hostel before security forces could arrive, Sokoto police spokesman Ahmad Rufa’i told the AP. One woman was also abducted from the village, Rufa’i said, adding that a police tactical squad was deployed to search for the students. The inaccessible roads in the area, however, challenged the rescue operation, he said, adding: “It …

Assange extradition hearing told of US plot to kidnap campaigner

Assange extradition hearing told of US plot to kidnap campaigner

Supporters of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange protest outside Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London, during his continuing extradition hearing. Picture date: Wednesday April 20, 2022. Picture: PA Wire The United States’ bid to prosecute Julian Assange is “state retaliation”, the High Court has heard in his final bid to escape extradition. The Wikileaks founder faces extradition to the US over an alleged conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defence information following the publication of hundreds of thousands of leaked documents relating to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. In a January 2021 ruling, then-district judge Vanessa Baraitser said that Assange should not be sent to the US, citing a real and “oppressive” risk of suicide, while ruling against him on all other issues. But later that year, US authorities won their High Court bid to overturn this block, paving the way towards Assange’s extradition. Lawyers for the 52-year-old are now asking for the go-ahead to challenge the original judge’s dismissal of other parts of his case to prevent his extradition. Thanks for subscribing. Plot to kidnap child hatched a week before Madeleine McCann disappeared | UK News

A plot to kidnap a child was being hatched in a Portuguese holiday resort a week before Madeleine McCann vanished there, Sky News has been told. Expat Ken Ralphs said that Christian B, the German drifter suspected of abducting Madeleine, tried to recruit a mutual friend to help find a youngster to sell to a childless couple. Mr Ralphs, a former UK political campaigner, said Christian B made the offer to the man who was penniless and living in a tent in a remote part of the Algarve coast. Mr Ralphs, 59, said: “We were sitting around the fire one night after a meal, we had a few beers and during the early hours of the morning my friend began to cry. “I asked him what the matter was and, eventually, he confessed to me he was getting involved with Christian to steal a child from Praia da Luz from a rich family.” Mr Ralphs, Christian and their mutual friend, a foreigner who cannot be named for legal reasons, were all part of a nomadic, …
