Sudan: Attacks on health workers jeopardise remaining hospitals operating in Khartoum | Conflict and arms

Increased violence against health workers in Khartoum is endangering the few hospitals still open in the Sudanese capital, the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said after its employees were beaten and whipped by armed men on Thursday. The MSF team was attacked 700 metres from the Turkish hospital, one of only two operating in southern Khartoum after others were forced to close during almost 100 days of fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). MSF said it may not be able to maintain its presence at the hospital, having continued to support it by performing surgeries and treating chronic illnesses – while also receiving about 15 people wounded by the fighting each day. Christophe Garnier, MSF’s emergencies manager for Sudan, said: “In order to save people’s lives, the lives of our staff who are there to carry out this lifesaving work must not be put at risk. If an incident like this happens again, and if our ability to move supplies continues to be obstructed then, regrettably, our presence …

Sudan paramilitary force reportedly makes gains in Khartoum as fighting surges | Sudan

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) says it has seized the main base of a heavily armed police unit and captured a large amount of military equipment, during heavy fighting against the army in the capital Khartoum. In a statement on Sunday, the RSF said it had taken full control of the large base belonging to the Central Reserve Police southern Khartoum and posted footage of its fighters celebrating inside the facility, some removing boxes of ammunition from a warehouse. It later said it had captured 160 pickup trucks, 75 armoured personnel carriers, and 27 tanks. The Reuters news agency was not immediately able to verify the footage or the RSF statements. There was no immediate comment from the army or the police. The Central Reserve Police has been deployed by the army in ground fighting in recent weeks. It had previously been used as a combat force in several regions and to confront protesters demonstrating against a coup in 2021. It was sanctioned last year by the United States, accused of using excessive force …

Sudan: 27 reported killed in shelling of market in poor area south of Khartoum | Sudan

Twenty-seven people have been killed and 106 injured after a market in a poor area south of Khartoum was shelled, according to local residents. Six tank shells were fired from al-Shajara, one of the few areas the army controls in the Sudanese capital, towards the neighbourhood of Mayo, residents said. Sources said the death toll could rise significantly because many of the injured were unable to get to hospitals for treatment. Mayo is populated mostly by people who have not been able to afford to leave Khartoum since fighting broke out between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on 15 April. It is not known to be near any military target in the capital, which is 90% controlled by the RSF. “Medical staff are under pressure to deal with so many cases with limited staff,” the Sudanese Doctors Trade Union said. “We call all doctors and medical cadres who are nearby to come to the hospital so they can help as much as they can.” Abdelmotal Saboon, a resident in the area …
