Iran Says It Arrested 35 People in Relation to Deadly Kerman Attacks

DUBAI (Reuters) – Iranian authorities have arrested 35 people in relation to the Jan. 3 attacks in the southeastern city of Kerman, the Intelligence Ministry said on Thursday, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. The ministry said it had identified one of the two suicide bombers as a national of Tajikistan, who entered Iran illegally on Dec. 19. More information will be released at a later date about the second suicide bomber, the ministry said, adding that the arrests had been carried out in several Iranian provinces. The Islamic State claimed responsibility on Jan. 4 for the attack that killed nearly 100 people and wounded 284, at a memorial for top commander Qassem Soleimani. Tehran has vowed revenge for the bloodiest such attack since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. (Reporting by Dubai Newsroom; editing by Christina Fincher and Ros Russell) Copyright 2024 Thomson Reuters. Will Iran retaliate after the deadly bombings in Kerman? | Crime

Iran threatens retaliation after two blasts killed more than 80 people during commemorations for an assassinated general. More than 80 people were killed in the southeastern Iranian city of Kerman when two explosions went off during a crowded procession on Wednesday. The attack happened during a ceremony marking four years since the United States assassinated one of Iran’s top generals, Qassem Soleimani. The attack has added yet another layer of tension in a region already embroiled in Israel’s war on Gaza, and this week’s assassination of a Hamas commander in Lebanon. So, is there a connection? And will the suspicions of different governments and armed groups escalate the violence? Thousands of mourners had gathered there to commemorate Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani on the fourth anniversary of his assassination in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq in 2020. A spokesman for the country’s emergency department was quoted by Iran’s state-run news agency as saying 103 people were killed and 188 were injured. The deputy governor of Kerman, the slain general’s hometown, said the incident was a “terrorist attack,” according to Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). The explosions occurred about a half-mile from Soleimani’s burial place, on a road to the graveyard, the agency reported. Before the blasts, the state-run live broadcast had shown thousands of mourners filling the street, moving calmly in a procession. After the attack, it broadcast video of people running frantically and men wearing EMT uniforms surging into the crowd. There was no immediate …
