Donald Trump’s Nine Lives – The Atlantic

Donald Trump’s Nine Lives – The Atlantic

Donald Trump loves the musical Cats, and like the titular creatures, the former president seems to have nine lives. Today, in the face of yet another near-death financial experience, Trump got his latest reprieve. An appeals-court panel in New York State reduced the bond he must post in a civil fraud case from more than $464 million to just $175 million. Given that the past few months have seen Trump repeatedly use legal procedures to his advantage, drawing out the cases against him in the hope of eventually escaping them, this decision may look like yet another infuriating case of Trump extracting injustice from the justice system. But in fact it is not such an instance, and the reduction is actually quite appropriate. Recall the timeline. In mid-February, Justice Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump must pay more than $350 million, plus interest, after he, his sons, and the Trump Organization engaged, according to the judge’s findings, in a years-long pattern of fraud, inflating and deflating the reported value of his assets in order to profit …

Justice Arthur Engoron’s ruling is not fatal for Trump’s business empire, but it might be a near-death experience. Jabin Botsford / The Washington Post / Bloomberg / Getty February 16, 2024, 5:21 PM ET A New York judge fined Donald Trump $355 million today, finding “overwhelming evidence” that he and his lieutenants at the Trump Organization made false statements “with the intent to defraud.” Justice Arthur Engoron’s ruling in the civil fraud case is not fatal for Trump’s business empire, but it might be a near-death experience. The fine fell just short of the $370 million that New York Attorney General Letitia James sought. Engoron also declined to cancel the Trump Organization’s licenses to practice, as he had suggested he might last year. But he barred Trump from serving as an officer of any New York company for three years, and his sons for two. Engoron also ruled that a court-appointed monitor would continue to oversee the company for at least three years. David A. Graham: It’s just fraud all the way down “This Court …

Donald Trump Is Any Defense Attorney’s Nightmare

They say that a man who represents himself has a fool for a client. So, perhaps, does a person who represents Donald Trump. To most people, attacking someone with influence over one’s freedom and fortunes is self-evidently unwise, but that is precisely what Trump has been up to. This week, the former president attended a civil trial in Manhattan to determine what damages he might have to pay in a case about his company committing a massive, yearslong fraud. Justice Arthur Engoron, the judge in the case, has already ruled that fraud did occur, and Trump is furious about it. “This is a judge that should be disbarred,” he said outside of the court on Monday. “This is a judge that should be out of office. This is a judge that some people say could be charged criminally for what he’s doing. He’s interfering with an election.” David A. Graham: A guide to the cases against Trump The next day, Trump’s campaign issued a lengthy statement portraying Engoron as a Democratic operative, and Trump attacked …

The Cases Against Trump: A Guide

The Cases Against Trump: A Guide

Not long ago, the idea that a former president—or major-party presidential nominee—would face serious legal jeopardy was nearly unthinkable. Today, merely keeping track of the many cases against Donald Trump requires a law degree, a great deal of attention, or both. In all, Trump faces 91 felony counts across two state courts and two different federal districts, any of which could potentially produce a prison sentence. He’s also dealing with a civil suit in New York that could force drastic changes to his business empire, including closing down its operations in his home state. Meanwhile, he is the leading Republican candidate in the race to become the next president. If the court cases unfold with any reasonable timeliness, he could be in the heat of the campaign trail at the same time that his legal fate is being decided. David A. Graham: The end of Trump Inc. Here’s a summary of the major legal cases against Trump, including key dates, an assessment of the gravity of the charges, and expectations about how they could turn …
