Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun by Elle Cosimano

Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun by Elle Cosimano

The Accidental Sleuth Strikes Again Ever had one of those days where you accidentally stumble into a life of crime? No? Just Finlay Donovan then. In Elle Cosimano’s third installment of the Finlay Donovan series, our favorite hot-mess mom-turned-accidental-hitwoman is back, and she’s jumping headfirst into a whole new world of trouble. “Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun” picks up where “Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead” left off, with Finlay and her partner-in-crime (and nanny extraordinaire) Vero neck-deep in mob debt and desperately trying to keep their heads above water. It’s a bit like watching a cat try to swim – hilarious, slightly concerning, but you can’t help but root for them. A Citizen’s Police Academy? What Could Go Wrong? In a twist that had me laughing out loud, Finlay and Vero find themselves enrolling in a citizen’s police academy. It’s like sending a fox to guard the henhouse, except in this case, the fox is wearing mom jeans and has spit-up on her shoulder. Their mission? Find a contract killer before the cops do. Oh, …

Amazon Jumps On Record AWS Profit Margin, Solid Holiday Quarter Guidance

Amazon Jumps On Record AWS Profit Margin, Solid Holiday Quarter Guidance

As we noted in our preview earlier, Hedge Funds are getting picky into the quarter. While most were short as given a perceived miss below Street for Q4 EBIT, some have covered as downside (if any) would be short-lived with investors having messaged a “buy-the-dip” mentality. Investors are starting to understand the variability of operating income and there is a general agreement that this is the best capital allocator in the space, so would rather Amazon invest than harvest profit dollars. The bull case continues to center around prospects for faster gross merchandise value growth and share gains on higher level of service amidst ongoing fulfillment regionalization efforts in the US and eventual global rollout; ongoing margin expansion in Amazon’s ecommerce franchise due to improving unit economics; new high margin revenue stream from Prime Video with ads – although still in its early innings it should become a meaningful contributor over time, especially as content costs are already incorporated in the model. Investors are also focused on the payouts through the investment cycle with AWS …

FTSE 100 Live 9 May: Bank of England holds interest rates, index jumps

FTSE 100 Live 9 May: Bank of England holds interest rates, index jumps

Kathleen Brooks at XTB says: “The Bank of England kept rates on hold on Thursday, however, the interesting part of this meeting was the release of the second Monetary Policy Report of the year. As expected, growth was revised higher, while inflation was revised sharply lower for the UK. The BOE no longer sees UK inflation with a 3% handle in its forecast period, which is out to 2027. This is a big shift for the UK, and suggests, that the UK’s inflation problem is now under control, and price pressures have slowed sharply even though the economy is near full employment. While the BOE thinks that it is too soon to declare victory over the cost-of-living crisis, the BOE also thinks that the key indicators of inflation persistence are moderating, which is helping the overall disinflation trend to continue. The BOE’s forecasts for the unemployment rate were also revised lower, which could mean that the UK economy will get its very own soft landing.” Source link

Japan’s yen jumps vs dollar amid specter of BOJ intervention

Japan’s yen jumps vs dollar amid specter of BOJ intervention

NEW YORK/TOKYO : The yen jumped against the dollar late on Wednesday, with traders on high alert for signs of intervention by Japanese monetary authorities to boost a currency languishing near 34-year lows. The dollar fell sharply to 153 yen from about 157.55 yen for reasons that were not immediately clear, after the U.S. stock market closed and the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting ended hours earlier. The dollar was last at 154.85 yen. The yen had rallied on Monday, with money market data suggesting Japan’s finance ministry had spent around $35 billion to prop up the currency that day. Official intervention data for the period will be announced at the end of May. Traders have been on watch for weeks for possible intervention by Japanese officials, as even a historic exit from negative rates has failed to lift the currency. When contacted by Reuters, Japan’s vice finance minister for international affairs, Masato Kanda, who oversees currency policy, said he had nothing to say about whether Japan had intervened in the market. Two days ago, …

Blackrock’s Larry Fink Jumps On “Next AI Trade”, Warning World Will Be “Short Power”

Blackrock’s Larry Fink Jumps On “Next AI Trade”, Warning World Will Be “Short Power”

At the start of April, we penned a lengthy report for premium subs discussing why artificial intelligence data centers, the electrification of the economy, and onshoring trends will result in a major upgrade of the nation’s power grid. We followed the note up on Monday with a report titled Everyone Is Piling Into The “Next AI Trade.”  Now , BlackRock Chairman and Chief Executive Larry Fink has jumped on the “Next AI Trade” theme at a World Economic Forum event on Monday.  “I do believe to properly um build out AI. We’re talking about trillions of dollars of investing. So data centers today could be as much as 200 megahertz – and they’re now talking about data centers being one gigawatt. That powers a city,” Fink told the audience.  He pointed out that he spoke with the head of one tech company, who said their data centers currently require about 5 gigawatts of power. By 2030, the person told Fink that number could jump to 30 gigawatts.  “The amount of power that’s needed to use AI has a huge impact on society,” Fink said.  He then asked: “So where’s that power going to come from? Are we going to take it off …

Homelessness jumps 16% in England, laying bare scale of housing crisis | Homelessness

Homelessness jumps 16% in England, laying bare scale of housing crisis | Homelessness

The number of people being made homeless jumped by 16% in the final three months of last year, according to the latest government figures, which laid bare the scale of the country’s housing crisis. Figures published by the government on Tuesday show nearly 45,000 households in England were assessed as homeless in the three months to December, up from just under 39,000 during the same period in 2022. The figures also show the number of people – including children – in temporary accommodation hit record levels in 2023, triggering warnings of a housing “emergency”. Mike Amesbury, the shadow minister for homelessness, said: “These stats reveal a growing Tory housing emergency being felt by families in every part of the country. Over the past 14 years, the Tories have taken a wrecking ball to the foundation of a secure home, leaving Britain facing a homelessness epidemic. “Under this government’s watch, kids are growing up in temporary accommodation, coming home from school to do their homework on the bathroom floor of a hotel room and eating dinner …

Blackstone CEO Jumps On ‘The Next AI Trade’

Blackstone CEO Jumps On ‘The Next AI Trade’

US power grid regulators and utilities are warning about energy shortfalls. Projections for US electricity demand growth over the next five years have doubled from about one year ago, primarily because of the expected explosion of artificial intelligence data centers, federally subsidized manufacturing plants, and the government-fueled electric vehicle transition.  Source: NERC – 2022 Long-Term Reliability Assessment (as of December-2022). Grid Strategies – The Era of Flat Power Demand is Over (as of December-2023). In recent months, Wall Street has received the memo about the tidal wave of new electricity demand from data centers powering technology like generative AI. We recently outlined to readers investment opportunities in powering up America for the digital age in “The Next AI Trade.” On Tuesday, Blackstone Chief Executive Officer Steve Schwarzman appeared to have also received the memo as Wall Street whistles the same tune about the AI boom threatening to overload the nation’s power grid and the urgent need for an upgrade.  Schwarzman told the audience at the Asia Pacific Financial and Innovation Symposium in Melbourne that a massive …

US Powerball Jackpot Jumps to 5 Million

US Powerball Jackpot Jumps to $975 Million

DES MOINES, Iowa —  The Powerball jackpot climbed to an estimated $975 million after no one matched the six numbers drawn Saturday night, continuing a nearly three-month stretch without a big winner. The winning numbers drawn were: 12, 13, 33, 50, 52 and the red Powerball 23. No one has won Powerball’s top prize since New Year’s Day when a ticket in Michigan hit for $842.4 million, bringing the number of consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner to 38. That winless streak nears the record of 41 consecutive drawings, set twice in 2022 and 2021. The $975 million prize is for a sole winner who chooses an annuity paid over 30 years. A winner opting for cash would be paid $471.7 million. The prizes would be subject to federal taxes, and many states also tax lottery winnings. As the prizes grow, the drawings attract more ticket sales and the jackpots subsequently become harder to hit. The game’s long odds for Saturday’s drawing were 1 in 292.2 million. Powerball is played in 45 states plus Washington, …
