Juan Hamilton, Protégé and Beneficiary of Georgia O’Keeffe, Died at 79

Juan Hamilton, an artist, caretaker, and protégé of renowned painter Georgia O’Keeffe and the sole beneficiary of her will, died in his Santa Fe, New Mexico home on February 20 at 79 years old. He died from complications related to a subdural hematoma, which occurred several years ago, according to his wife Anna Marie Hamilton. Born John Bruce Hamilton on December 22, 1945, in Dallas, Texas, he grew up in Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela, the child of parents Alan and Claire (Kitzmiller) Hamilton, who served as Presbyterian missionaries. During this time, he adopted the name Juan and began learning how to work with clay from local potters. Related Articles Hamilton lived between Manhattan’s Upper West Side and Glen Rock, New Jersey in high school, and earned a bachelor’s degree in studio art from Hastings College in Nebraska, and later studied sculpture at Claremont Graduate University in California. Trump to escalate blame on trial judge Juan Merchan if sentenced to prison | Donald Trump

Trump to escalate blame on trial judge Juan Merchan if sentenced to prison | Donald Trump

Donald Trump is determined to avoid jail, but if he does get handed a prison sentence after his conviction on 34 felony counts in New York last week, the former president’s inner circle is certain he will lay the blame squarely at the judge’s feet, sources familiar with the matter said. The precise way Trump might blame the judge, Juan Merchan, remains unclear because Trump has been avoidant of the issue and the matter was not resolved when he huddled with his top advisers at a Trump Tower meeting immediately after the verdict on Thursday, the sources said. But Trump is likely to double down on his attacks against Merchan, directing his supporters at rallies and in Truth Social posts to take up their grievances with the judge, one of the sources added. The consequences of Trump’s likely rhetoric are difficult to predict. Trump has been railing against Merchan for months as being unfair and in conspiracy cahoots with the Biden administration to prevent him from campaigning – and nothing concrete has happened. Still, Trump’s …

Argentine anchor Juan Pedro Aleart shares his child sex abuse story on air

The news anchor behind the desk looked straight into the camera and said, “This is the start of a different program.” “I have told you many stories,” Juan Pedro Aleart, co-host of news program “From 12 to 14” in Rosario, Argentina, said in Spanish. “This is the first time that I will tell you mine.” Live on air for almost half an hour last week, Aleart told viewers of a nightmare within his family: allegations of a violent father who terrorized him and of a member of his extended family who sexually abused him from the age of 6. Nobody did anything to stop it, he said. “I know what it feels like: It’s degrading, it’s embarrassing,” he said, addressing male survivors of sexual abuse. “I know that many have not told their wives, their children, their friends, their psychologists.” “I want to say that the only path to healing is to put it into words, to talk about it, to denounce it,” he added. In text messages to The Washington Post, Aleart, 36, said …

Library of Congress to preserve songs by Juan Gabriel and Hector Lavoe

Library of Congress to preserve songs by Juan Gabriel and Hector Lavoe

Juan Gabriel’s “Amor Eterno” and Héctor Lavoe’s “El Cantante” will be safeguarded for posterity, the Library of Congress announced Tuesday. The two tracks are among the 25 “audio treasures” selected for induction into the National Recording Registry based on their “importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.” Established in 2000, the registry is a collection of 650 audio recordings preserved by the Library of Congress that are deemed to be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Among these year’s picks are Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Blondie’s “Parallel Lines” and Green Day’s “Dookie.” For “Amor Eterno” and “El Cantante,” their cultural importance to Latinx communities stretches back decades. Gabriel, the iconic Mexican singer-songwriter who died in 2016 at age 66, released “Amor Eterno” in 1990 as a tribute to his late mother. Since then, the mariachi ballad has become a symbol of grief and everlasting love for those who have passed away. In 2019, “Amor Eterno” became widely played at memorials and funerals in El Paso in the wake of a mass shooting that killed 23 …

Trump is on trial in that NYC courtroom — and so is Judge Juan Merchan

Trump is on trial in that NYC courtroom — and so is Judge Juan Merchan

With jury selection now underway in People of the State of New York v. Donald Trump, the skill, wisdom, decisiveness and patience of the trial judge, New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, are on trial along with defendant Trump.  Here are two immediate ways the judge will be tested: the questions of 1) who will truly be the boss in the courtroom; and 2) whether Trump will find a juror willing to vote to acquit him no matter how strong the evidence is regarding his attempted election interference. As to the first question, trials often involve lawyers battling with judges for control of the courtroom. A trial lawyer wants the jury looking to him or her as the one in charge, the one to rely upon. This case is different. The war will be between the judge and Donald Trump. From the get-go, the former president will probe for weakness. He wants the jury looking at him. We can expect an audible running commentary from Trump, all day every day. (If he doesn’t keep dozing …
