Biden to host Jordan’s King Abdullah for White House talks

U.S. President Joe Biden welcomes Jordan’s King Abdullah II for talks Monday at the White House with the situation in Gaza likely high on the agenda. Abdullah met last week with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Amman, where they discussed efforts to reach a cease-fire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, as well as Jordanian efforts to get more humanitarian aid into Gaza and to find long-term peace in the region with a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Biden and Abdullah covered similar ground in a February meeting at the White House. Nearly a month ago, Biden and Abdullah consulted by telephone following Iran’s massive aerial attack targeting Israel, which the White House said, “also threatened Jordan and the Jordanian people.” Source link

Iran’s attack on Israel, Macron said, was a “disproportionate response” to the strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, earlier this month which Tehran blamed on Israel. “Instead of targeting Israeli interests outside Israel, they went after Israel on its soil, and attacked from their own soil, which is a first,” he said. Over the weekend, Iran targeted Israel with five hours of missile and drone strikes, which had limited impact despite Tehran’s claim that the attack “achieved all its objectives.” “Whoever hurts us, we will hurt him,” Netanyahu said in response to the attack. The U.S. has already warned Israel that it would not take part in any retaliatory action against Iran. Source link

Jordan’s government struggles to contain unrest as Gaza protests grow

Jordan’s government struggles to contain unrest as Gaza protests grow

Hundreds of protesters gathered in the Jordanian capital Tuesday for a third straight night to call for an end to Israel’s war in Gaza, clashing with baton-carrying riot police before tear gas rained down on them. On Wednesday night, demonstrators were back on the streets. “Open the borders,” they chanted. Though there have been regular protests in Amman, Jordan, throughout the nearly six-month war, the government has largely managed to contain the situation by aligning itself with public sentiment — harshly criticizing Israel’s conduct of the war and championing the Palestinian cause. But the scenes this week appeared more spontaneous, the crowds larger and the anger more raw, sending shock waves through the country’s powerful security establishment. “Jordan is in an unenviable position,” said Saud al-Sharafat, a former Brig. Gen. in the Jordanian General Intelligence Directorate and founder of the Sharafat ِCenter for the Study of Globalization and Terrorism. The grinding conflict in Gaza, and the soaring Palestinian death toll, are testing the state’s “ability to maintain the tempo that exists now, so that [things] …

Michael Arceneaux and Jason Parham discuss “I Finally Bought Some Jordans”

Lopez/For The Times) Forty-eight hours of torrential downpour betray the natural logic of Los Angeles. Submerged roadways, mudslides and record-setting rainfall have transformed the Southland city into an obstacle course out of the apocalypse, the very scene you’d see in a movie before everything goes full dystopia. Withstanding extreme conditions is nothing new for Michael Arceneaux, who has made a career out of navigating unstable ground. Today is just another Wednesday. As we sit to talk on the balcony of his Koreatown apartment, seven stories up, the rain has finally stopped despite a procession of chubby gray clouds that hang like prop art in the sky, threatening to disrupt what momentary peace we’ve found. For now the storm is over. The context is appropriate given what Arceneaux, 39, has faced in the last year, losing his mother to cancer in October. And a close friend before that. “I am in my sad …

Moises Saman for NPR FLYING OVER NORTHERN GAZA STRIP — Seventeen-thousand feet in the air, Jordanian air force personnel are unhooking the chains to let pallets of wrapped cardboard boxes attached to parachutes roll out the cargo door. The aid drop on Thursday is part of a dramatic and desperate effort to get food to Gaza’s starving population as Israel allows only a trickle of aid to enter through the country’s sole working land border. Airdrops — expensive, cumbersome and inefficient — are considered by the aid community the last resort of food delivery. But Jordan hopes that the tons of food it is dropping during the 5-month-old war in Gaza will save at least some lives. The collapse of aid delivery to Gaza was illustrated on Thursday by …
