Road House, the iconic story from the late 1980s starring Patrick Swayze, is kicking its way into the modern era. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and UFC record-breaking champion Conor McGregor, the upcoming reimagined film welcomes the next generation of fans. In 2024’s Road House, Gyllenhaal takes on the role of Elwood Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter hired to help clean up the clientele at a bar in the Florida Keys. When a real estate developer wants the bar’s land for his next project, he hires a lethal hitman (played by McGregor), posing big trouble for Dalton. Audiences will also see an appearance from Post Malone during the film that drops to Prime Video on March 21. National security adviser Jake Sullivan traveled in secret to Ukraine on Wednesday in a trip aimed at reaffirming U.S. support for the beleaguered ally despite an impasse in Congress over additional funding for the war effort. Sullivan arrived in Ukraine as the country’s forces are on their back foot, having retreated from the eastern city of Avdiivka and facing Russian advances across the front lines. Kyiv is facing chronic shortages of ammunition and soldiers as House lawmakers in the United States weigh a Senate aid package that includes $60 billion for Ukraine. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has thus far refused calls to vote on the measure, sending the White House scrambling to find weaponry and equipment it can send to Ukraine. “You should believe in the United States,” Sullivan told reporters in a briefing at Ukraine’s presidential office in Kyiv. “We are confident we will get this done. C. J. Rice was first arraigned in 2011 on the 11th floor of 1301 Filbert Street, a towering, steel-framed criminal-court complex two miles from the South Philadelphia neighborhood where he’d grown up. In 2013, on the fifth floor of the same building, Rice was tried on four counts of attempted murder, found guilty, and sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison. For three years, he appealed the sentence, appearing on the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth floors. After each attempt failed, he was shuttled back to a state prison in rural Coal Township, Pennsylvania. This morning, on the eighth floor, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced that it no longer considers Rice a viable suspect in the shooting for which he had been found guilty. His conviction had already been overturned by a federal court in November, on the grounds that his attorney had been constitutionally deficient. Look. It’s not like the original Road House was some untouchable relic. The 1989 Patrick Swayze vehicle was a horny, violent drama with a plot that was as clumsy as its leading man was devastatingly hot. It shouldn’t be impossible to remake it into something freshly fun. But my god do director Doug Liman and leading man Jake Gyllenhaal make it look difficult.  Premiering at SXSW 2024’s opening night ahead of its debut on Prime Video, Road House re-imagines the story of a cool-as-a-cucumber yet capable of throat-ripping bouncer James Dalton for a new age and a new locale. There are some key differences between the Dalton of Rowdy Herrington’s 1989 cult classic Road House and the Dalton of Doug Liman’s equally boisterous remake. To start, the stoic bouncer’s first name is now Elwood instead of John. He rolls into town — the Florida Keys, not Kansas City — on a Greyhound bus instead of in a new car. This Dalton walks everywhere, wearing down the soles of his cigar brown combat boots with each mile. His swagger is enhanced by a mellow kindness — at one point, a character compares him to Mr. Rogers (with a violent edge, of course).  What hasn’t changed all that much are Dalton’s motivations and his notoriety. When we meet the infamous man, played here with compelling restraint by Jake Gyllenhaal, his face is shrouded by his black hoodie. He saunters into an underground fight club with a menacing determination.
