Carl Sagan Issues a Chilling Warning About the Decline of Scientific Thinking in America: Watch His Final Interview (1996)

Carl Sagan Issues a Chilling Warning About the Decline of Scientific Thinking in America: Watch His Final Interview (1996)

Until the end of his life, Carl Sagan (1934–1996) continued doing what he did all along — popularizing science and “enthusiastically conveying the wonders of the universe to millions of people on television and in books.” Whenever Sagan appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson during the 70s and 80s, his goal was to connect with everyday Americans — people who didn’t subscribe to Scientific American — and increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of science. At the end of his life, Sagan still cared deeply about where science stood in the public imagination. But while losing a battle with myelodysplasia, Sagan also sensed that scientific thinking was losing ground in America, and even more ominously within the chambers of the Newt Gingrich-led Congress. During his final interview, aired on May 27, 1996, Sagan issued a strong warning, telling Charlie Rose: We’ve arranged a society on science and technology in which nobody understands anything about science and technology, and this combustible mixture of ignorance and power sooner or later is going to blow up in our faces. NEU teachers show strike appetite, but low turnout issues

Most NEU teachers vote in favour of strikes – but indicative ballot turnout below threshold Most NEU teachers vote in favour of strikes – but indicative ballot turnout below threshold Most National Education Union teachers would be willing to strike over the government’s 2.8 per cent pay increase from September, an indicative ballot found. However fewer than half of eligible members voted – meaning if the turnout was replicated at a full ballot, the union wouldn’t meet the threshold for strikes. NEU – the country’s largest teacher union – said its national executive will meet at conference next week to discuss the results and decide whether a formal ballot is run. Daniel Kebede, NEU general secretary, said: “Our members know that there needs to be a major pay correction, with teacher pay significantly improved against inflation and other professions, for us to have any hope of filling vacancies in our schools or attracting graduates into teaching.   “The government’s response is a 2.8 per cent increase from September which will be below inflation and way behind …

The evolution of easier births means slower walking and pelvis issues

The evolution of easier births means slower walking and pelvis issues

Pelvis width may influence the risk of birth complications and back pain Cavan Images/Getty Images The width of a person’s hips seems to be a result of complex trade-offs between the evolution of larger brains and upright walking, according to the largest study of its kind to date. “If your brain is getting larger and larger over the same evolutionary time as your pelvis is getting narrower, this, of course, results in conflict,” says Vagheesh Narasimhan at the University of Texas at Austin. This idea, first proposed in the 1960s, is known as the obstetrical dilemma. More recently, it has been suggested that the risk of pelvic floor conditions also factors in. The pelvic floor is a layer of muscles that keeps our organs in place. If it weakens or tears, it can lead to incontinence and problems during childbirth. “The obstetrical dilemma has been debated very hotly,” says Narasimhan. There have been many previous studies trying to relate the structure of the pelvis to walking speed and efficiency, for instance, but these studies have …

Heads open up about torrent of issues

More from this theme Recent articles School leaders have been confronted outside their homes, spat at and “offered out” for fights as abuse from parents surges, a Schools Week investigation can reveal. One school has even installed cameras outside the homes of worried staff, while a traumatised primary head admits they are too scared to leave work alone late at night. The head of another – who has been the focus of toxic social media campaigns – thinks online abuse led to one pupil wrongly branding him a paedophile. Abuse cases ‘almost beyond belief’ Paul Whiteman, the general secretary of the National Association of Headteachers (NAHT), says some of the cases are “almost beyond belief”. A poll this week found 82 per cent of 1,600 NAHT leaders surveyed said they had been abused by parents in the past 12 months. Verbal attacks were the most common, followed by posts online.
