UK charges pro-Palestine group members under terrorism law | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Palestine Action members are accused of burglary, violent disorder at building belonging to Israeli defence firm Elbit. British counterterrorism police have charged seven people with violent disorder over a break-in at a building belonging to Israeli defence firm Elbit in southwest England. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said on Tuesday that seven people, aged between 20 and 51, have been charged with criminal damage, violent disorder and aggravated burglary over an incident at the Elbit Systems premises in South Gloucestershire on August 6. “On the facts of this case, the CPS will be submitting to the court that these offences have a terrorist connection,” the CPS said in a statement. Members of Palestine Action were due to appear at London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court later on Tuesday. Avon and Somerset Police said the group forced its way into the building and “seriously assaulted” staff after smashing the gate with a vehicle and driving into the compound. Palestine Action rejected allegations of violence against police and security staff and said the authorities had launched a “smear campaign” …

At least 12 killed in rocket attack in Israeli-occupied Golan Heights | Israel-Palestine conflict News

At least 12 people have been killed and 30 others wounded in a rocket attack on a football pitch in the town of the Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Israeli authorities said. Israel’s military spokesman Daniel Hagari said children were among those killed and accused the Lebanese group Hezbollah of carrying out the attack on Saturday, but the group denied any involvement. “Our intelligence is clear. Hezbollah is responsible for the killing of innocent children,” Hagari said. “We will prepare for a response against Hezbollah … we will act,” he said. Hezbollah swiftly denied responsibility for the attack on Saturday. The group said in a statement it “categorically denies the allegations reported by certain enemy media and various media platforms concerning the targeting of Majdal Shams”. “The Islamic Resistance has no connection to this incident,” it said, referring to its military wing. The Iran-aligned group has been exchanging fire with Israeli forces in areas near the Israel-Lebanon border since October 8, when Israel launched its war on Gaza. People react after a rocket …

‘Ticking time bomb’: Poliovirus found in Gaza sewage | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Looming health disaster for displaced Palestinians living in tent camps, where sewage flows freely, contaminating water. Poliovirus has been detected in samples of sewage water in the densely populated Gaza Strip, placing “thousands” of Palestinians at risk of contracting the highly infectious disease that can cause paralysis. Gaza’s Ministry of Health said it had detected “component poliovirus type 2” in coordination with UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency. “Detecting the virus that causes polio in wastewater heralds a real health disaster and exposes thousands of residents to the risk of contracting polio,” it said on Thursday in a statement. The virus could be found in sewage “that collects and flows between the tents of the displaced”, said the ministry. Already scarce supplies of drinking water in the densely populated Strip are at risk of being contaminated by the virus. Authorities in the central Gaza city of Deir el-Balah this week predicted that “roads will be flooded by wastewater” and “diseases will spread” after it turned off sewage water pumping and treatment stations. “We’re talking about …

Israel air raid on Gaza clinic kills senior Palestinian health official | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Palestinian medics and rights advocates have denounced the killing of a top medical official in Gaza by the Israeli military, accusing Israel of systematically targeting the health system in the besieged enclave. Israel bombed a clinic in Gaza City late on Sunday, killing Hani al-Jaafarawi, Gaza’s director of ambulances and emergency, and four other people. The targeted clinic, which offered general health, paediatric and dental services, was also put out of commission by the Israeli attack. “The Israeli war jets bombed the clinic and destroyed its rooms completely,” said Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Ismail Algoul, reporting from Gaza City. “The blood of the people who were targeted is still on the floor, while now, thousands of patients are in danger after the clinic lost all of its facilities as a result of the Israeli raid.” Eyad Zaqout, director of the emergency department at Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir el-Balah, told Al Jazeera on Monday that by killing al-Jaafarawi, Israel removed “a pillar” from the territory’s collapsing health system. “It is clear that the Israeli forces are …

Israeli tank fired at Hind Rajab family car from metres away: Investigation | Israel-Palestine conflict News

The six-year-old remained alive for hours among the bodies of her dead relatives after they were attacked by Israeli troops. An Israeli tank fired from a close distance at the family car of six-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab, and a tank shell directly hit the ambulance that was dispatched to help, according to an investigation. The killing of the child and her family in Gaza City in late January prompted international condemnation. Rajab, who survived the initial shooting, had begged for help as she bled out among the bodies of her dead relatives while on the phone with paramedics and her mother for three hours. In a documentary on civilian killings in the war on Gaza, Al Jazeera TV’s Fault Lines provided a detailed reconstruction of the incident, compiled in collaboration with nonprofit investigative groups, Forensic Architecture and Earshot. The investigation revealed the Israeli tank was likely just 13 to 23 metres (42 to 75 feet) away when it opened fire on Rajab and her relatives in their car. Through interviews with family members, Palestinian …

Israel’s Netanyahu dissolved the war cabinet, does it matter? | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dissolved the country’s war cabinet, following the withdrawal of his principal rival, Benny Gantz. The six-member war cabinet will now be replaced by a “kitchen cabinet”, which Netanyahu will be able to consult for advice on the war on Gaza. Netanyahu had been under pressure from far-right ministers within his coalition cabinet who wanted to join the war cabinet, which could have triggered a further lurch to the extreme right of Israeli politics. What was the Israeli war cabinet? The war cabinet was formed on October 11 after Israel declared war on Gaza in response to a Hamas-led attack on October 7. The cabinet was set up as a smaller body within the security cabinet, which was part of the wider coalition cabinet. It comprised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his principal rival, former general Benny Gantz, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and three observers: government ministers Aryeh Deri and Gadi Eisenkot, and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer. The war cabinet was intended to make quick decisions about the conduct of …

Yemen’s Houthis say they targeted Greek-owned ship in Red Sea | Israel-Palestine conflict News

The attack on the cargo ship caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room, but there were no reports of casualties. Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a small watercraft and missile attack that left a Greek-owned cargo ship taking water and in need of rescue near the Red Sea port of Hodeidah. There were no immediate reports of casualties in Wednesday’s attack on the cargo ship. It is unclear if the vessel’s ownership has any connection to Israel. The Iran-backed group, which is at war with a Saudi Arabia-led coalition, has been in control of Yemen’s capital Sanaa and its most populous areas. It has been launching scores of drone and missile attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November in support of the Palestinians under Israeli attack in Gaza. They have sunk one ship, seized another vessel, and killed three seafarers in several attacks. The Houthis said the Tutor coal carrier was seriously damaged and vulnerable to sinking after they targeted the vessel with an unmanned …
