Canadian police arrest three in slaying of Sikh separatist that strained ties with India

Canadian police said they arrested three suspects Friday in the slaying of a Sikh separatist leader last June that become the center of a diplomatic spat with India, and are investigating possible ties between the detainees and the Indian government. Issued on: 04/05/2024 – 08:31 2 min Three Indian nationals in their 20s identified as Kamalpreet Singh, Karan Brar and Karampreet Singh were arrested in Edmonton, Alberta on Friday morning in the slaying of 45-year-old Hardeep Singh Nijjar by masked gunmen outside Vancouver, police said. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sparked a diplomatic feud with India in September when he said that there were “credible allegations” of Indian involvement in the slaying of Nijjar. India had accused Nijjar of links to terrorism, but angrily denied involvement in the slaying. In response to the allegations, India told Canada last year to remove 41 of its 62 diplomats in the country. Tensions remain but have somewhat eased since. 02:15 The three suspects had been living in Canada as non-permanent residents, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Superintendent Mandeep Mooker …

A Judge Is Forcing Hawaii to Give Wildfire Investigation Documents to Lawyers Handling Lawsuits

A Judge Is Forcing Hawaii to Give Wildfire Investigation Documents to Lawyers Handling Lawsuits

HONOLULU (AP) — A judge on Friday forced the Hawaii attorney general’s office to turn over to lawyers involved in the hundreds of lawsuits over last summer’s Maui wildfires all documents, interviews and data collected by the outside team hired to investigate the disaster. Attorneys representing plaintiffs suing over the August fires filed a motion last month asking a judge to compel the state provide them with the material gathered by the Fire Safety Research Institute, which was hired by the state to investigate. The state refused, saying disclosing the records would “jeopardize and hinder” the investigation. In court documents opposing the motion, the state called the request “premature, baseless and frivolous,” and asked a judge to order that attorneys fees be paid to the state for defending against the motion. Soon after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century ripped through the historic town of Lahaina and killed 101 people, Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez announced hiring outside investigators. Last month Lopez and representatives from the Fire Safety Research Institute released a …

Laurence Fox Faces Police Investigation After Sharing ‘Upskirting’ Photo

Laurence Fox Faces Police Investigation After Sharing ‘Upskirting’ Photo

Laurence Fox is facing a police investigation after posting an upskirt photo on social media. On Tuesday, the former GB News presenter shared an explicit image of Narinder Kaur, the former Big Brother contestant who now appears regularly on shows like Good Morning Britain and GB News, on his X (formerly Twitter) account. The post remained live until it was removed two days later. A Met Police spokesperson told the Independent that they had been made aware “of a post on social media regarding an upskirting offence”, and were looking into the matter. Fox claimed to have posted the photo in retaliation to remarks made by Kaur about the model and right-wing commentator Leilani Dowding. After coming under fire about his social media post, he later told his detractors: “She can go cry victim all she wants. It’s not my fault she forgot to put her pants on, the whining cry bully hypocrite.” Source link

Why people are calling for investigation into £200k Vaughan Gething donation | UK News

Calls for an investigation into a £200,000 donation to Welsh First Minister Vaughan Gething have intensified. A motion calling for an independent probe into the money was debated in the Senedd on Wednesday and defeated by 27 votes to 25. But former deputy climate change minister Lee Waters said Mr Gething should do “the right thing” and return the donation. Mr Gething was elected leader of Welsh Labour in March and succeeded Mark Drakeford as Wales‘s first minister. Opposition parties launched a bid to appoint an independent advisor to check whether there was any conflict of interest over the donation during the leadership campaign. Mr Gething says it was within the rules and declared in line with party protocols. A separate debate took place on whether to introduce a cap on political donations. That motion was also defeated. When asked about the issue at PMQs, Rishi Sunak said “answers” were needed and that the matter was “not at all transparent”. UCLA protests: Classes canceled, UC president launches investigation

UCLA protests: Classes canceled, UC president launches investigation

UCLA was reeling Wednesday after hours of violence that unfolded overnight at a pro-Palestinian encampment, heightening concerns about the university’s handling of the protests over the Gaza war and the future of the camp. Just before midnight, a large group, wearing black outfits and white masks, arrived on campus and tried to tear down the barricades surrounding the encampment. Campers, some holding lumber and wearing goggles and helmets, rallied to defend the site’s perimeter. Over several hours, counterdemonstrators hurled objects, including wood and a metal barrier, at the camp and those inside. Fights repeatedly broke out. Some tried to force their way into the camp, and the pro-Palestinian side used pepper spray to defend themselves. Fireworks were also launched into the camp. The attack went uncountered for three hours, until dozens of officers from the California Highway Patrol, LAPD and other agencies arrived and restored order. The slow response sparked criticism and calls for investigations. In a letter to the University of California Board of Regents obtained by The Times, UC President Michael V. Drake …

Meta Faces EU Investigation Over Election Disinformation

Meta Faces EU Investigation Over Election Disinformation

Meta, the American tech giant, is being investigated by European Union regulators for the spread of disinformation on its platforms Facebook and Instagram, poor oversight of deceptive advertisements and potential failure to protect the integrity of elections. On Tuesday, European Union officials said Meta did not appear to have sufficient safeguards in place to combat misleading advertisements, deepfakes and other deceptive information that is being maliciously spread online to amplify political divisions and influence elections. The announcement appears intended to pressure Meta to do more ahead of elections across all 27 E.U. countries this summer to elect new members of the European Parliament. The vote, from June 6-9, is being closely watched for signs of foreign interference, particularly from Russia, which has sought to weaken European support for the war in Ukraine. The Meta investigation shows how European regulators are taking a more aggressive approach to regulate online content than authorities in the United States, where free speech and other legal protections limit the role the government can play in policing online discourse. An E.U. …

Why hasn’t the US called for an investigation into mass graves in Gaza? | Arwa Mahdawi

Why hasn’t the US called for an investigation into mass graves in Gaza? | Arwa Mahdawi

Did you know that the Palestinians are the very first people in the world to ethnically cleanse and mass murder themselves? I know it sounds weird, but – as American and Israeli politicians keep reminding us – these are “savages” that we are talking about here. Normal rules don’t apply, you’ve got to follow the Palestine Rules. The Palestine Rules dictate you do the following: ignore every international agency if that agency says anything remotely critical about Israel. Certainly don’t listen to international aid agencies like Oxfam when they argue that the government of Israel is “deliberately blocking and/or undermining the international humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip”. Nope, the fact that babies in Gaza are dying of malnutrition is all their fault. The fact that children in Gaza are starving at the fastest rate the world has ever known is nothing to do with Israel, it’s the fault of those pesky Palestinians. The fact that there are an unprecedented number of child amputees in Gaza is the Palestinians’ fault. Let’s be very clear here: …

Biden Rejects World Court Investigation Of Israel As Netanyahu Arrest Warrant Looms

Biden Rejects World Court Investigation Of Israel As Netanyahu Arrest Warrant Looms

The Biden administration is reportedly in the midst of a diplomatic full court press in efforts to prevent the International Criminal Court (ICC) from issuing arrest warrants for top Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The ICC is also expected to issue warrants for Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Israel Defense Forces chief of staff Herzi Halevi, in connection with alleged large-scale human rights abuses related to the war in Gaza. Axios reports Monday that the Israeli government is growing “increasingly concerned” over the possible action, while Walla news has written that Netanyahu is “under unusual stress” over what will be a largely symbolic, albeit still deeply embarrassing reputational black eye for his government at a moment he’s facing immense domestic pressure at home to bring back the hostages. Via AFP The Israeli leader has personally asked President Biden to intervene. Axios details of the call: “The officials said Netanyahu expressed his concern to Biden in a phone call on Sunday, where the two leaders also discussed hostage negotiations, Israel’s defense against Iran’s missile attack, and the need …

Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free system under investigation after fatal crashes

Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free system under investigation after fatal crashes

Federal safety regulators have opened an investigation into Ford’s hands-free driver assistance system, BlueCruise, after it was active during two recent crashes into stationary vehicles that killed multiple people. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) said Monday that it has confirmed BlueCruise was active in both crashes. One took place in February in Texas, and the other happened in early April in Pennsylvania. They are the first-known fatalities resulting from crashes involving the use of BlueCruise. The investigation into the two crashes ratchets up the scrutiny on BlueCruise, which is currently available on the Mustang Mach-E, and certain Ford F-150s (including the Lightning), Explorers, and Expeditions. The National Transportation Safety Board has already opened an investigation into the Texas crash. Ford did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The new probe comes just days after ODI closed its most high-profile driver-assistance investigation to date into Tesla’s Autopilot. The safety agency initially opened that probe in 2021 after multiple reports of Teslas crashing into stationary emergency vehicles while the …
