Bishops and bankers meet to help Catholics seeking to ethically invest

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Religious communities are increasingly seeking to invest in companies that match their faith values and ethical concerns, but experts say the financial market lags in providing the appropriate options. A conference in London on Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 11-12) sought to bridge that gap by bringing together financial service industry experts with Anglican and Catholic leaders, who represent dioceses and congregations all over the world and an estimated portfolio of $1.75 trillion. “What we are seeing is that there’s increasing interest from religious organizations, not just Catholic, but also other Christian denominations, to make sure money is indeed managed in an aligned way with their faith,” Peter Hugh Smith, chief executive of London-based CCLA Investment Management, told RNS in an interview. CCLA, a London-based organization that manages funds for the Church of England and other religious charities, hosted the conference. The Mensuram Bonam Summit, from the Latin meaning “for good measure,” was named after a document published in 2022 by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which laid out guidelines for …

Amazon to invest $10 billion in UK data centres

Internet giant Amazon’s cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services, said on Wednesday that it plans to spend 8 billion pounds ($10.45 billion) in the United Kingdom over the next five years to build, operate and maintain data centres. The company expects the investment project to contribute 14 billion pounds to the country’s gross domestic product by the end of 2028 and to support more than 14,000 jobs at British businesses. The project represents a step-up in the pace of Amazon’s investment in Britain. Since 2022 AWS has invested 3 billion pounds in facilities in London and Manchester. “Our team that builds our data centres globally take into account multiple levers that they have to look at before they can decide where to put data centres … from power to water to the local environment,” Tanuja Randery, a managing director at AWS, told Reuters. She singled out use of artificial intelligence as among the factors driving demand for cloud services. AWS has been investing heavily across Europe, announcing a 15.7 billion euros investment in Spain earlier …

Google to invest US$2 billion in data centre and cloud services in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Google will invest US$2 billion in Malaysia to develop its first data centre and Google Cloud region in the country, the unit of Alphabet said on Thursday (May 30), the latest in a wave of expansion by global tech firms into Southeast Asia. The government said the investment would advance Malaysia’s digital ambitions, and the artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and other advanced technologies would help local industry move up the global value chain. With a young tech-savvy population of 670 million, Southeast Asia has been attracting plenty of interest and investment recently from technology giants including Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia and Apple. Google said in a statement the data centre and cloud region will be located in Sime Darby Property’s Elmina Business Park in central Selangor state. The data centre will power services including Search, Maps and Workspace, and will help deliver AI services, while the cloud centre will offer services to local firms and public sector organisations, it said. “Malaysia and Google are partnering to advance our shared work to create a supportive …

Brexit Britain win as UK becomes first in Europe to invest £196m into new nuclear project | UK | News

Britain is to invest almost £200million on Europe’s first advanced nuclear fuel facility not reliant on Russia, Rishi Sunak vowed to “prise Putin’s blood-soaked hands off Europe’s energy market”. The Prime Minister’s bullish remarks came as his Government confirmed it was awarding £196 million to Urenco to build a uranium enrichment facility at Capenhurst, Cheshire, which will produce high-assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel by 2031 for export or use domestically. The Government said the facility will support 400 highly skilled jobs, power the UK’s future nuclear power stations and ensure other countries were not dependent on Russia for advanced nuclear fuel, a market which it currently dominates. Ministers said the scheme was part of an effort to improve energy security and isolate Moscow from energy markets, after moves to stop imports of Russian oil and gas following the illegal invasion of Ukraine. Mr Sunak said: “Building our own uranium enrichment plant is essential if we want to prise Putin’s blood-soaked hands off Europe’s energy market. “Russia has been the sole provider of this powerful …

Aptera offers public an opportunity to invest via self-directed IRA

Solar EV startup Aptera Motors has announced a clever new demand lever to get more of the public to invest in its technology en route to initial vehicle production later this year. Starting today, you can now invest in Aptera through a self-directed IRA. If you don’t know what a self-directed IRA is or do not have one yet, no worries; Aptera has the steps in place to walk you through it. Aptera is a scrappy EV startup in its second iteration, consistently pushing forward and leading a nascent segment of solar EVs as the first-ever to reach scaled production and prove the plausibility of those zero-emissions vehicles. As it is for all startups, scaling is hard. However, Aptera Motors has never tiptoed around that hurdle it still faces and has already presented several unique solutions to garner funding while offering the public opportunities to be the first to drive off in one of its sun-powered EVs. In early 2023, Aptera co-founders Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony announced an Accelerator Program, requesting community funding investments from reservation …

Amazon to invest $11 billion in Indiana to build data centers

Amazon.com’s cloud-computing arm said it would invest $11 billion in Indiana to build data centers, marking the state’s largest capital investment, and promising at least 1,000 jobs. The announcement by Amazon Web Services on Thursday builds on the online retail giant’s already strong presence in the state, where it employs 26,000 full- and part-time staff. The new facilities will be build in St Joseph County in north-central Indiana and house computer equipment used to power cloud computing and generative artificial intelligence. Amazon did not specify how many data centers would be established. Big technology companies have been racing over the past year to build data centers needed to power applications such as OpenAI’s viral ChatGPT as they try to capitalize on what is expected to be the industry’s next key growth driver. The Indiana Economic Development Corp (IEDC) will offer Amazon Web Services data center sales tax exemptions for eligible capital investments over a 50-year term, the company said. The IEDC has also agreed to offer some performance-based incentives, including up to $18.3 million in …
