How to use Instagram’s ‘Reveal’ sticker

How to use Instagram’s ‘Reveal’ sticker

Instagram has added a bunch of new features for Stories, offering users new ways to share posts, photos, and videos with their followers. The latest additions to the app’s roster of tools include some that are interactive, like “Reveal”: a way to post a hidden, blurred story that will only reveal itself once a follower sends a DM. This could be a fun new way to connect with followers, but it’s unclear how many people will actually turn to using the sticker. Mashable Top Stories If you want to be one to try it out, here’s how to do it. Kylie Jenner, Cardi B, Angel Reese, Emily Ratajkowski, and More Star in Instagram’s Met Gala 2024 Class Photo

At the Mark Hotel, where celebrities gathered with their glam squads to prep for the Met Gala 2024, there was a calm before the storm, as there always is. In the late afternoon, the elevators shut down for everyone except those with an urgent appointment at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. On Monday, Instagram took advantage of the relative quiet to gather its guests for the night for a class picture before they hit the carpet. The members of the group were set to sit together inside the big event, but their group portrait was created with the help of a bit of computer magic. Each guest was photographed solo by Djeneba Aduayom, who, alongside her team, transformed the shots into a surreal tableau. Instagram’s executives were the first to take their turn in the hotel room serving as a makeshift photo studio, which was decorated with a pink-and-blue backdrop and a few accessory cherry blossom branches. Instagram’s new algorithm will reward original content, penalize copycats

Instagram’s new algorithm will reward original content, penalize copycats

enigma_images/Getty Images Instagram is changing how its algorithm recommends content. Smaller, original content creators stand to benefit the most. For a long time, content aggregators have been able to reach audiences by simply resharing content from others, according to an Instagram post announcing the changes. Sometimes the accounts attribute the content, and sometimes they don’t; regardless, these aggregator accounts rarely offer a fresh spin, commentary, or a new take on the content. These accounts are about to get a lot less reach, Instagram claims. Also: Meta wants to add its AI chatbot into your Instagram search bar First, Instagram plans to implement what it calls “direct replace.” If Instagram finds two pieces of identical content, it will try to find the original poster, show that to a wider audience instead of the aggregator’s version, and add a label linking the copy to the original. Aggregators will still be able to reach the accounts that follow them, but they might not have much reach beyond that. Instagram admits that it may not always be able to find …

How to turn off Instagram’s political content filter

How to turn off Instagram’s political content filter

It’s election season in the U.S., and Instagram has changed the way that it recommends political content. On both Instagram and the newer X competitor Threads, this change won’t impact what you see from accounts you already follow. But the platforms won’t proactively recommend content about politics, which could limit users’ ability to learn about political issues from people outside of their existing circles. This is especially impactful as Instagram’s algorithm shifts toward recommending more posts from accounts you don’t follow, especially Reels. While some people might welcome a breather from politics, others find the changes alarming, since social media is a key tool for community organizing and disseminating information about current events. Plus, Instagram’s definition of political content is a bit broad — it describes political content as anything “potentially related to things like laws, elections, or social topics.” If these changes bother you, you can adjust your settings to override Instagram’s political content filters. Changing Instagram’s political content settings If you don’t want Instagram to filter out political content from your feed, here …

How to unlock Instagram’s political content settings in 3 easy steps

How to unlock Instagram’s political content settings in 3 easy steps

Instagram and Threads have begun limiting political content in user feeds and some members are less than amused with parent company Meta’s new feed changes, criticizing the move as potential censorship by the social media giant during an election year. As changes begin rolling out across Meta’s properties, here are the basics you need to know — plus a quick and easy way to get political stories back in your feeds so can keep up with basic news about government, elected officials and the social movements you care about.  What happened to political posts on Instagram?  The same thing that happened to the ones on Threads and which is expected to happen to Facebook — Meta’s new policy will reduce the amount of news that its algorithm automatically serves to you if that news has to do with government, elected officials or (as Instagram announced on Feb. 9) “political topics that affect a group of people/society at large.” That limitation of political content will also effect you if you have a Threads account. The same …

Instagram’s copycat strategy is beating TikTok as a possible ban looms

Instagram’s copycat strategy is beating TikTok as a possible ban looms

When Instagram releases a new feature that is a direct copy of another app, its users fear the worst. In a 2022 essay for Digital Trends, writer Cristina Alexander lamented the “TikTok-ification of Instagram” because it “takes away the type of content people love most about the platform: photos from friends and family, as well as content based on their interests.” “And it’s something I’m just about fed up with,” Alexander wrote. But the doomsaying rarely lasts forever. Alexander joins the ranks of Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, and a whole host of regular users — including myself — who have fallen into the cycle of hating it when Instagram makes a copycat change and then, after a few months, come around to it.  Like it or hate it, Instagram’s copycat strategy works — and its dedication to stealing features from other apps is helping to fuel its ability to overtake TikTok.  Think of Instagram like Kirby in Super Smash Bros. He’s a formidable foe on his own, but it’s using his Copy Ability by swallowing …

Instagram’s Threads outpaces X with mobile download surge

Instagram’s Threads outpaces X with mobile download surge

Instagram’s Threads is swiftly outpacing its competitors, most notably X (formerly Twitter), in daily downloads across both iOS and Google Play platforms, according to TechCrunch reporting. This surge signifies a potential shift in the market dynamics of social networking and microblogging services. Since its public launch in the summer of 2023, Threads has experienced a significant influx of new installs, initially spurred by Meta’s strategic efforts to integrate and promote the app within its existing network, including Facebook and Instagram. Despite an initial fluctuation in download rates, Threads has now achieved a consistent lead over X, marking a pivotal moment in the competition for user engagement. Recent data underscores this trend, with Threads securing nearly triple the downloads on iOS and more than double on Google Play compared to X. On February 25, 2024, Threads boasted 486,803 installs on Google Play and 342,228 on iOS, dwarfing X’s 225,408 and 112,625 downloads on the respective platforms. This gap not only highlights Threads’ growing popularity but also suggests a widening preference among users for Meta’s microblogging platform. …

Instagram’s Uneasy Rise as a News Site

Instagram’s Uneasy Rise as a News Site

On a recent Wednesday in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood, Mosheh Oinounou, a former producer for CBS, Bloomberg News and Fox News, swiped through Instagram. He had started his morning reading major newspapers and more than a dozen newsletters. Then he spent much of the day turning many of the articles into posts on his Instagram account, under the handle Mo News. A Wall Street Journal story on aging Americans was relayed through a picture of a cake declaring, “Record Number of Americans Will Turn 65 This Year: Wealthy, Active, And Single.” At times, Mr. Oinounou, an affable 41-year-old, has also appeared on camera with the co-host of his daily news podcast to explain the significance of how Republican presidential candidates were polling and why President Biden was a write-in candidate in New Hampshire. The content has earned Mo News 436,000 Instagram followers, turning what had been a pandemic side project into an enterprise with three full-time employees and a bigger spotlight. In December, the State Department offered Mo News an interview with Secretary of State Antony …
