Southern Water reports major data breach impacting hundreds of thousands

Southern Water, a leading water utility company in the South East of England, has announced a significant data breach, potentially impacting between 235,000 and 470,000 of its customers. The breach, which occurred in January, saw hackers accessing sensitive customer information during a cyberattack. The company, serving millions across the region, disclosed that “5 to 10 percent” of its customer base might have had their personal data compromised. This estimate, based on ongoing forensic investigations, leaves room for the possibility that the number of affected individuals could rise. Details of the stolen data, as reported by BBC News, include customers’ dates of birth, national insurance numbers, bank account details, and reference numbers. Southern Water has yet to confirm the specifics of the compromised information. In addition to customer data, Southern Water revealed plans to inform all current and some former employees about the breach. The utility firm, employing around 6,000 individuals, is still investigating the full extent of the incident. The cyberattack was claimed by the Black Basta ransomware group, known for its links to Russia …

Amy Robach makes emotional admission about terminal cancer impacting someone close to her

Amy Robach has shared a very personal story on social media about someone incredibly close to her.  The former Good Morning America star took to Instagram on Wednesday to share details of her good friend, Morgan Mitchell, who is living with terminal metastatic breast cancer.  The Amy and T.J. Podcast star urged fans that more needs to be done in the way of raising awareness of MBC and shared a number of photos of the pair of them together from over the years. In the caption, Amy wrote: “Meet one of my best friends… Morgan Mitchell. She is a bad ass. A three time marathoner, with a high powered media sales job, and she is living with stage 4, metastatic breast cancer.  “MBC isn’t something we talk about much in the media – right now there are treatments available but it’s ultimately terminal – and so many women’s stories, like Morgan’s, are never told because people shy away from things that are sad or scary. But we HAVE to talk about this disease!  “30 percent …

The Apple Watch ban is impacting repairs, too

The Apple Watch ban is impacting repairs, too

The Apple Watch news keeps getting worse and weirder. Just a day after a ban on direct sales from Apple of its Series 9 and Ultra 2 smartwatches went into effect, a somewhat nasty side consequence of the ban has come to light, courtesy of Bloomberg. Put simply, any Apple Watch going back to 2020’s Series 6 that is out of its one-year warranty cannot be repaired by Apple as long as this ban is happening. SEE ALSO: Apple Watch Series 9 vs. Apple Watch Ultra 2: What are the differences? You also can’t swap a new Apple Watch for another model within the 14-day return period, either. It’s all very weird and inconvenient for Apple Watch owners, with the caveat that you can still buy the new ones at stores like Best Buy. According to Bloomberg, Apple staff members are supposed to tell customers they’ll let them know when they get the green light to perform hardware fixes again, including replacements for broken screens. In the meantime, Apple will keep providing software-oriented support — …

Product Hunt cleans house with layoffs impacting 60% of staff

Product Hunt, the product discovery site for smaller startups, apps, tech tools, and developers’ side projects, is cleaning house. The company earlier this month announced layoffs, but didn’t give an indication of how widespread those cuts were. We now understand the cuts impacted around 60% of the team, including design, product, sales, and other roles. Product Hunt’s about page indicates engineering, ads, and community staff remain. The layoffs were first publicly announced on October 10th, when CEO Rajiv Ayyangar posted on X in an effort to help connect former employees with hiring opportunities. He wrote: “This week I did a round of layoffs at Product Hunt across multiple functions. We had to narrow the roles on our team for speed and focus. We’re parting ways with talented individuals who care deeply about their work and teammates. If you’re hiring, dm me – I’d love to connect you.” This week I did a round of layoffs at Product Hunt across multiple functions. We had to narrow the roles on our team for speed and focus. We’re …

Fortnite maker Epic Games is laying off 16% of its workforce, impacting 870 people

Fortnite maker Epic Games is laying off 16% of its workforce, impacting 870 people

Epic Games is laying off 16% percent of its employees, impacting about 870 people, the Fortnite maker announced on Thursday. The company also announced that it’s divesting Bandcamp, an online audio distribution platform it acquired last year, and spinning off most of SuperAwesome, a kid-safe technology developer that it acquired in 2020. The layoffs news was first reported by Bloomberg. “For a while now, we’ve been spending way more money than we earn, investing in the next evolution of Epic and growing Fortnite as a metaverse-inspired ecosystem for creators,” Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney wrote in a memo to employees. “I had long been optimistic that we could power through this transition without layoffs, but in retrospect I see that this was unrealistic.” Sweeney went on to note that the company had been “making ongoing efforts to reduce costs, including moving to net zero hiring and cutting operating spend on things like marketing and events.” Despite these efforts, the company ended up “far short of financial sustainability” and that Epic concluded that layoffs were the …

Tesla says data breach impacting 75,000 employees was an insider job

Tesla says data breach impacting 75,000 employees was an insider job

Tesla has said that insider wrongdoing was to blame for a data breach affecting more than 75,000 company employees. Tesla, the electric car maker owned by Elon Musk, said in a data breach notice filed with Maine’s attorney general that an investigation had found that two former employees leaked over 75,000 individuals’ personal information to a foreign media outlet. “The investigation revealed that two former Tesla employees misappropriated the information in violation of Tesla’s IT security and data protection policies and shared it with the media outlet,” Steven Elentukh, Tesla’s data privacy officer, wrote in the notice. This information includes personally identifying information, including names, addresses, phone numbers, employment-related records, and Social Security numbers belonging to 75,735 current and former employees. Tesla said two former employees had shared the data with German newspaper Handelsblatt. The outlet assured Tesla that it wouldn’t publish the information and that it is “legally prohibited from using it inappropriately,” according to the notice. Handelsblatt reported in May that Tesla had been hit by a “massive” breach revealing everything from employees’ personal …

WhatsApp rolls out back-end fixes to address spam calls impacting Indian users

WhatsApp has announced that it has introduced back-end updates to tackle spam calls, which are particularly prevalent in India right now. It has impacted many users in the last few days and eventually brought the attention of the Indian government. On Thursday, the Meta-owned messaging app announced that it quickly ramped up its AI and ML systems to bring down spam call incidents. Some users were sometimes even harassed and scammed through fraudulent calls coming from unknown international numbers. In the past few days, Indian users have extensively reported these incidents on social media. “WhatsApp is a leader among end-to-end encrypted services in protecting user safety. We continue to provide several safety tools within WhatsApp like Block & Report, consistently build user safety education and awareness, as well as, proactively weed out bad-actors from our platform. However, bad actors find different ways to scam users. International scam calls is a new way that bad actors have recently adopted,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement. The spokesperson added that the new enforcement would reduce the …

Roku announces a second set of layoffs impacting 200 employees, or 6% of its workforce

Roku announces a second set of layoffs impacting 200 employees, or 6% of its workforce

Roku is the latest tech company to announce a second round of layoffs with today’s news that it’s letting go of 6% of its workforce, or around 200 employees. The company disclosed the cuts in an SEC filing, explaining that the decision is part of a larger plan to lower its year-over-year operating expense growth and prioritize projects that it believes will have a higher return on investment. The company had laid off 200 U.S. employees back in November, citing economic conditions in the industry. The new filing also said the restructuring would result in the “exit and sublease” of certain office space Roku no longer occupies. The plan will cost Roku approximately $30 to $35 million in non-recurring charges related to matters like severance costs, notice pay, employee benefit contributions, and other related costs related to the cease of use of its office facilities. Roku said it expects the majority of those charges to be incurred in the first quarter of this year. It expects the headcount reductions, including the cash payments to be …

Amazon confirms another round of layoffs, impacting 9,000 people in AWS, Twitch and other units

Amazon confirms another round of layoffs, impacting 9,000 people in AWS, Twitch and other units

Amazon has announced another substantial round of layoffs in four months, as the internet giant today revealed that a further 9,000 people are set to lose their jobs. In a memo published by CEO Andy Jassy this morning, the company said that the cuts will impact those in its AWS cloud unit, Twitch gaming division, advertising, and PXT (experience and technology solutions) arm. The news comes just a couple of months after Amazon had revealed 18,000 layoffs, the majority of which were set to come from its  PXT and Amazon Stores businesses. That news in itself was an extension on a previous round of layoffs that was originally set to hit around 10,000 people, so today’s reveal shines a light on how Amazon has gone about its headcount reduction efforts — it has been staggered, to say the least. Indeed, Jassy addressed this very point in today’s memo, noting that rather than rushing to finish its assessments in order to announce all the redundancies in one fell swoop, they elected to take their time and …
