See the messages NASA is sending to Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa

[ad_1] Illustration of NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft NASA/JPL-Caltech IN OCTOBER, NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft is due to start its journey to explore Jupiter’s ice-encrusted moon Europa (imagined above in illustration). NASA asked the scientific organisation that I lead, METI International, to draw on our expertise at attempting to contact extraterrestrial intelligence and help craft a symbolic missive engraved on a tantalum plate attached to the spacecraft – greetings from one water world to another. We helped create two parts of the message. First, we collected a globally representative sample of audio recordings of the word for water in 103 languages, showing each as a waveform on the outward-facing side of the panel (shown above) that protects sensitive scientific instruments. On the other, inward-facing side (shown below), we designed the scientific part of the message. This describes water in terms of the “water hole”, the band of frequencies between the hydrogen and hydroxyl (which combine to form water) emission lines in the radio spectrum where many early searches for intelligence beyond Earth were conducted. Other parts …

GMA’s Dr. Jennifer Ashton takes icy plunge in red bikini during time off the show

[ad_1] Dr. Jennifer Ashton just made the best of some time off for spring break, heading off to Patagonia, Chile for a vacation that was far from relaxing. Instead, the GMA3 anchor and ABC chief medical correspondent, 54, took on the icy glaciers and cold waters to give herself an adrenaline boost before heading back to work. Dr. Ashton took to her Instagram on Monday morning to mark her return to work while revealing just how she closed out her trip to Chile, and it was definitely stark! You may also likeDr. Jennifer Ashton’s intense workouts “Jumping back into work after our Chile/ Patagonia adventure like…,” she captioned a clip of herself dressed in a bright red bikini while walking on a pier. She then hopped right into the chilling water, which she even wrote on screen measured in at 38 degrees Fahrenheit/3 degrees Celsius, and immediately swam back to shore and ran to find a towel and some warmth. It was all for the best, though, as Dr. Ashton wrote of her cold plunge: “It …

UK weather maps turn icy white as Britain to be blasted by one last snow bomb for 24 hours | Weather | News

[ad_1] New weather maps have shown the UK is to be blasted with one more snow bomb before it warms up for spring. Forecasters at WXCharts say snow will hit the UK at the start of next week on Monday, March, 25, and Tuesday, March 26. Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and Aberdeen could all see a smattering of the white stuff during that period while there is also a chance London and Southampton could see a small amount of snow on Tuesday. Elsewhere Wales, Plymouth, Bristol and other southern areas of the UK are likely to see rain along with central areas such as London and Birmingham. WXCharts says snowfall is likely to remain light, with only Scotland, Manchester and Liverpool potentially seeing deeper snow than 1cm. But the Met Office did not agree with the company’s forecasters saying the UK was more likely to see heavy rain than snow. Its forecast for Monday to Wednesday read: “Low pressure is likely to dominate through this period, bringing heavy showers and longer spells of rain throughout. Temperatures …

The moons of Mars may have been formed in an icy planetary collision

The moons of Mars may have been formed in an icy planetary collision

[ad_1] How did Mars acquire its moons? NASA/JPL-Caltech/Malin Space Science Systems/Texas A&M University The mystery of where Mars’s two moons came from may finally be solved. If Phobos and Deimos were formed when an icy object smashed into Mars, it could explain their contradictory properties, which have long baffled researchers. Measurements of the geological makeup of Phobos and Deimos, including tentative signs of water, have suggested that they are more similar to asteroids than to Mars itself, hinting that they may be captured asteroids. However, that explanation would not account for their circular orbits, which instead hint… [ad_2] Source link

Backcountry skier dies amid icy conditions on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington

[ad_1] MEREDITH, N.H. — The steep bowl at Tuckerman Ravine on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington has long made it a favorite spot for expert skiers and snowboarders who are seeking adventure beyond the comparative safety of the state’s ski areas. But hard and icy conditions on Saturday turned the bowl deadly, with temperatures in the early afternoon reaching the low 20s and getting colder as the day progressed, according to National Weather Service data. Madison Saltsburg, 20, died after falling about 600 vertical feet down the ravine in the afternoon, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Two other skiers suffered serious injuries after falling and hitting rocks and ice. And there were a number of other falls witnessed throughout the day which didn’t result in serious injuries, the service said. A telephone message to a forest service spokesperson seeking information about Saltsburg wasn’t immediately returned Sunday. The day of accidents prompted search efforts that continued for hours in the dark as teams worked to rescue the injured skiers and remove Saltsburg’s body from the mountain. …

The search for extraterrestrial life is targeting Jupiter’s icy moon Europa

[ad_1]  “Europa is my favorite body in the solar system,” Quick confesses. But she notes that other ocean worlds also offer promising places to look for signs of life. Those include Enceladus, a small moon of Saturn that, like Europa, has an icy crust with an ocean beneath. Images from the Cassini mission in 2005 revealed that geysers on the south pole of Enceladus spew water and organic molecules into space, feeding Saturn’s outermost ring.  However, Europa is bigger than Enceladus and is more likely to have a surface covered in icy plates that move in a way similar to Earth’s plate tectonics. This sort of activity would help combine the ingredients for life. Ganymede, another Jovian moon and the solar system’s largest, also likely has a liquid ocean, but sandwiched between two ice layers; without an interface between water and minerals, life is less probable. Other possible places to look include Titan, Saturn’s biggest moon, which also probably hides a liquid-water ocean beneath an ice crust. (Quick is an investigator on Dragonfly, a mission …

Tesla Semi electric truck spotted handling closed icy road

Tesla Semi electric truck spotted handling closed icy road

[ad_1] The California Highway Patrol has shared a video of a Tesla Semi electric truck handling a closed icy road. Electric semi trucks are still quite new and there are a lot of naysayers about them. Bill Gates was one of them. He didn’t believe that a battery-electric truck could travel 500 miles, but he was proven wrong by the Tesla Semi. But battery-electric trucks still have a lot to prove. Tesla Semi is working on it by putting in the work. Tesla is operating a fleet of Tesla Semi trucks between Gigafactory Nevada east of Reno and its California operations. One of the critics of the Tesla Semi is that it primarily operates in the easy climates of California and Nevada, but to go between the two states, the electric trucks have to go through mountains and the Donner Summit. Conditions can get pretty bad there and the local California Highway Patrol announced that they had to close the road because it was so icy: “Things got a little icy!! We are now holding …
