Abolishing non-dom tax status would be humiliation for Tories, says Phillipson | Budget 2024 (spring)

Abolishing non-dom tax status would be humiliation for Tories, says Phillipson | Budget 2024 (spring)

It would be an “abject humiliation” for the Tories if they implemented Labour’s policy of abolishing non-dom status, the shadow cabinet minister Bridget Phillipson has said. The abolition of the status, which gives generous tax breaks to some of the UK’s richest residents, has long been one of Labour’s headline policies, but the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, is understood to be considering announcing a similar move in this week’s budget. During an interview on Sky News’s Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, Phillipson said: “If they were to do that [abolish non-dom status] it would be an abject humiliation, because Conservative cabinet ministers have spent years rubbishing this idea. “If they were to do it it would just demonstrate that it is Labour who are leading the charge when it comes to the battle of ideas in this country.” Non-dom status allows foreign nationals who live in the UK, but are officially domiciled overseas, to avoid paying UK tax on their overseas income or capital gains. Rishi Sunak’s wife, Akshata Murty, has previously enjoyed non-domiciled status. Bridget …

“Humiliation”: Fox host buries GOP as Republican admits “we were warned” about indicted informant

Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., claimed that top Republicans were warned about the debunked Biden claims from a former FBI informant before he was indicted for making up allegations that the Bidens took bribes. David Weiss, the special counsel who charged Hunter Biden with drug and tax violations, last week charged Alexander Smirnov with lying to the FBI that Hunter and President Joe Biden received $5 million bribes from executives at the Ukrainian energy firm Burisma for protection. The special counsel said that Smirnov told investigators that “officials associated with Russian intelligence” were involved in passing the story. Buck, a House Judiciary Committee member who has pushed back on the rush to impeach Biden, told CNN that Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., along with other Republicans were warned about the informant’s claims before they hyped them publicly. “We were warned at the time that we received the document outlining this witness’s testimony – we were warned that the credibility of this statement was not known,” Buck said. “And yet people, …

the west is at a crossroads – double down on aid to Kyiv, accept a compromise deal, or face humiliation by Russia

the west is at a crossroads – double down on aid to Kyiv, accept a compromise deal, or face humiliation by Russia

In the summer and autumn of 2022, there was much discussion about finding an “off-ramp” to allow Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, a face-saving way out of an unwinnable war. Now, as Ukraine heads into the third year of defending itself against Russia’s aggression, the suggestion persists – but increasingly, it’s the west that needs the off-ramp. Ukraine’s prospects, after two years of a gruelling war that have taken an enormous human toll, are uncertain. Its population losses, both in terms of battlefield casualties and the flood of emigration that followed the invasion, will be difficult to remedy, and could have crippling consequences for Ukraine’s already struggling economy. Not only that but the cost of the war is increasing at a staggering rate. The latest joint assessment by the EU, World Bank and UN of Ukraine’s recovery needs puts these at US$486 billion (£385.6 billion), up $75 billion since last year. This means Ukraine’s needs have grown in 12 months by one and a half times the total amount the EU has made available in support …

‘Utter humiliation’ for Humza Yousaf as SNP Health Secretary quits over £11k iPad Bill | Politics | News

Scotland’s health secretary Michael Matheson has quit his role after weeks of fury around an enormous £11,000 roaming charges Bill racked up on holiday. Mr Matheson ran up the whopping £10,935.74 bill during a family trip to Morocco, before insisting the data had been used for conducting constituency business. The MSP agreed to contribute £3,000 of the Bill from his office expenses, while the Scottish Parliament agreed to pay the remainder. It was only later that he confessed his sons had used the iPad and its data as an internet hotspot to livestream football matches. His shock decision to quit today, plunging hapless Humza Yousaf into yet another row, comes ahead of parliamentary investigation into the scandal, which will reportedly include further damaging facts about his conduct. In a resignation letter to the SNP First Minister, Mr Matheson said: “It is in the best interest of myself and the government for me to now step down to ensure this does not become a distraction to taking forward the government’s agenda”. Accepting his Health Secretary’s resignation, …

Welsh government’s humiliation after spending millions on a farm for music festival – that | Politics | News

Welsh Government has been accused of spending a whooping £4.25million to buy a farm site for a popular music festival before much of it was declared out of bounds due to nesting ospreys, it has been reported. In 2022, the Welsh Government funded Gilestone Farm in Powys to serve as a permanent base and auxiliary site for the Green Man festival due to financial constraints faced by the organisers. However, last year, a pair of ospreys, formidable fish-eating raptors, established a nest at the site, marking the farthest southward nesting of this species in Wales in two centuries. As ospreys are a protected species, Economy Minister Vaughan Gething confirmed on Monday the implementation of a 750-metre restricted zone around the nest, reported Mail Online. Despite this, during a session in the Senedd yesterday, Gething asserted that it was a favourable arrangement, emphasising that the government secured a £75,000 reduction from the market value of £4.325million. Mr Gething, a frontrunner to become the new first minister, told the assembly: “Public money hasn’t been wasted. We acquired …

Tim Scott mocked for reaching new “depth of self-abasement” for Trump: “The humiliation is so naked”

Tim Scott mocked for reaching new “depth of self-abasement” for Trump: “The humiliation is so naked”

Critics are ripping former presidential candidate and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., over his praise-filled exchange with Donald Trump during the former president’s Tuesday remarks in New Hampshire, with many emphasizing how “humiliating” Scott’s admiring comments to Trump were. “It was humiliating to watch what Tim Scott did as a sitting senator,” Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights leader, said during an appearance on “Morning Joe” Wednesday, per The Guardian. “And at one time … he wasn’t even on the script, he interrupted Trump to pay homage.” In Nashua, New Hampshire, Trump asked Scott if he ever thought opposing candidate Nikki Haley, his last notable foe in the race for the GOP nomination, “actually supported” him. “And you’re the senator of her state. And [you] endorsed me. You must really hate her,” the former president said. Scott interjected, “I just love you.” “That’s why he’s a great politician,” Trump told the crowd in response. Sharpton told MSNBC that he believes Trump, whom he predicts will be the Republican nominee, is “demanding people bow to him.” “There …

‘An experiment in ritual humiliation’: would a month of rejection therapy make me fearless? | Life and style

My heart is hammering, my head is humming with tension and there’s a real possibility I may vomit. No, I haven’t been set up on a blind date with Piers Morgan. Instead, I’m about to approach a stranger in a packed King’s Cross station and ask to borrow £100. I choose a middle-aged man with a kind face and a red scarf, and quietly make my request so as not to be overheard by commuters grabbing their lunch. He studies my face for the longest three seconds of my life before deciding, not unreasonably, that he “can’t really say yes without knowing what it’s for”. That’s fine: I’ve already succeeded. The whole point of the exercise was to experience the soul-crushing embarrassment of being rejected by a total stranger – something I have committed to doing every day for a month. What terrible decisions led me to this point? I recently had a humbling experience after telling my therapist that I don’t think of myself as a particularly fearful person. She responded by asking whether …

Sir Keir Starmer suffers humiliation as he’s crushed during heavy football defeat | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer suffered humiliation while playing football today after a dodgy goalkeeping performance saw his Sunday league side slip to a heavy defeat. Starmer and his London-based team were defeated 14-8 during the match, which saw him ship two goals while playing between the sticks. The Labour leader could be seen throwing his hands in the air in frustration as his side were well beaten. Starmer is known to be a big football fan having played the game since his school days, including for amateur north London side Homerton Academicals. He supports Arsenal and will be hoping they perform a little better than his side as they take on Liverpool this evening. When speaking to the LBC radio station in 2022 about his passion for the beautiful game, Starmer said it was his main interest as a child. He told the radio station: “It has always been and I still play, I played yesterday for 90 minutes. “But what I love about that is it’s a group of players I’ve known for a long, …
