Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangeroo Island: an eco hotel on Australia’s Galapagos

Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangeroo Island: an eco hotel on Australia’s Galapagos

At the request of founders, James, and Hayley Baillie, the original architect of Southern Ocean, Max Pritchard returned with his team to recreate 2.0. The original Lodge, which was the flagship of luxury collective, Baillie Lodges, was devastatingly burnt to the ground in bush fires in 2020, bar a sculpture of a kangaroo which sat in the lobby. More than a decade on, Pritchard has taken the opportunity to install cutting edge technology, setting new benchmarks for environmental sustainability in the tourism industry in everything from rainwater capture to solar power. 45,000 biodiverse native plants have been propagated on-site and planted to form a natural buffer from the surrounding wilderness. And of course, there is vastly upgraded fire prevention infrastructure. Source link

Rwanda migrant from UK lies low while lavish tax-payer funded hotel remains empty | World | News

Rwanda migrant from UK lies low while lavish tax-payer funded hotel remains empty | World | News

The first migrant sent to Rwanda under a voluntary deportation scheme from the UK was nowhere to be found at the luxury Hope Hostel in Kigali, where he was expected to stay. The hostel, renovated with £20million of UK taxpayers’ money, is part of the UK’s broader effort to house failed asylum seekers who agree to deportation or are subject to forced removals. The migrant, who arrived last week, declined to speak with the media. He reportedly received £3,000 in public funds as part of the voluntary scheme. However, when reporters from The Sun on Sunday visited the Hope Hostel, they found the facility’s gates locked and no sign of the asylum seeker. A security guard confirmed that the hostel was closed and currently empty. The reason for the migrant’s absence remains unclear, but sources suggest he is “lying low” elsewhere in Rwanda. Hope Hostel, originally constructed to house orphans from the 1994 genocide, was refurbished to accommodate migrants sent from the UK. The four-story building has 50 double rooms with balconies and can house …

Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden hotel review: inside the luxury 5-star boutique in Majorca

Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden hotel review: inside the luxury 5-star boutique in Majorca

Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden really does exceed expectations. Behind its elegant white stone façade, I was swept away by the blissfully calm atmosphere and enchanted at first glance.  Entering via an enclosed and cobble courtyard flooded with tree-dappled sunlight, hotel staff greeted me warmly before showing me through to a tranquil and secluded walled garden – the largest private garden in Majorca’s capital Palma – where I relaxed with a refreshing mocktail. I had entered an urban oasis in the middle of the buzzy old town.  © Can BordoyInside Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden The beautiful boutique was once a 16th-century mansion and home to a Sacred Heart primary school, with the design staying true to its roots.  The renovated mansion house, mastered by local architects Paloma Hernaiz and Jaime Oliver, features mature trees, original fixtures, ancient artwork, shaded seating areas, private corners and an elegant pool – all were flawless in style and boasted a magical feel. Rooms Each room is a sanctuary of opulence, combining the perfect blend of the …

Long Beach Hotel Housing ‘Homeless’ Sparks Tuberculosis Outbreak As Health Emergency Declared

Long Beach Hotel Housing ‘Homeless’ Sparks Tuberculosis Outbreak As Health Emergency Declared

A health crisis has emerged for Democrat officials in Long Beach, California, following a tuberculosis outbreak linked to a hotel housing ‘homeless’ people, according to Fox News.  On Thursday, health officials declared a public health emergency after an alarming tuberculosis outbreak was reported at an unnamed hotel housing.  The city has so far confirmed 14 cases of tuberculosis in people “associated with a single room occupancy hotel.” Nine of them were hospitalized with one fatal case. Another 170 people were “likely exposed” to the deadly bacteria.  “The outbreak is currently isolated to a distinct population and the risk to the general public is low,” the city said, adding, “The population at risk in this outbreak has significant barriers to care, including homelessness and housing insecurity, mental illness, substance use and serious medical comorbidities.” The reason health officials declined to name the hotel or its location is to comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act regulations.  One X user said, “I believe the name of the hotel SHOULD BE DISCLOSED in the interest of traveler safety. OR does this mean the hotel is used to house illegal aliens invading our border? Long Beach declares public health emergency …

The Eco Weekender: The Pig at Bridge Place, Kent

The Eco Weekender: The Pig at Bridge Place, Kent

The Pig at Bridge Place is a Grade II-listed English heritage mansion with 10-acre grounds in the Nailbourne Valley, a Potting Shed spa and the cutest patio in the kitchen garden where the best possible flatbreads are baked in the pizza oven. With 31 individually styled rooms and stand-alone suites and huts, it’s hard to imagine this cute, country house retreat segued from Jacobean manor to nightclub. Nowadays, the only noise likely to wake you is the birdsong or babbling stream. Robin’s wife, Judy, has excelled at conjuring a characterful look for the main house suites, which feel a step up from their signature rustic-upcycled shtick. The main hotel has the original features (including a ghost, rumour has it, if that’s your kink), exposed beams, vintage furnishings and eclectic decor. If you want quirky, go for the Steam Wagons or Hop Pickers Huts, which are an upmarket homage to the fact that up until the 1950s, tens of thousands of migrant workers used to flock to the fields of Kent to pick hop flowers for …

Prince Harry ‘forced to stay in hotel’ during UK visit | Royal | News

Prince Harry will likely be “forced to stay in a hotel” when he comes over to the UK next month, after his previous request to stay at Windsor Castle was rejected. Harry will be in the UK for the Invictus Games 10th anniversary commemorative service on May 8 at St Paul’s Cathedral, although Meghan Markle will not be joining him. No other senior royals are expected to be attending the service, but King Charles may be able to see his son if he can make time in his busy schedule. While he is in the UK it is thought the Duke of Sussex will be staying in a hotel, as he has done on previous occasions due to him no longer having a residence in this country. When Harry and Meghan first married they were given Frogmore Cottage by the late Queen Elizabeth as a wedding present, however following the publication of Spare in 2023 they were asked to vacate the property. The Sussexes have lived in Montecito, California since 2020, but still had the …
