‘Like the horrors of judgment day’: the cost to Palestinians of Israel’s hostage rescue | Israel-Gaza war

‘Like the horrors of judgment day’: the cost to Palestinians of Israel’s hostage rescue | Israel-Gaza war

The market in Nuseirat was busy on Saturday morning. Among the crowds were Asia El-Nemer, looking for a pharmacy that still had stock of her sister’s medication, and Ansam Haroun, hoping to find new clothes to lift her daughters’ spirits on the forthcoming Eid al-Adha holiday. This part of central Gaza had emptied at the start of the year when Israeli troops first moved through, destroying Haroun’s house in an airstrike, but filled up again from May as more than a million people fled north to escape another operation in Rafah. “The Nuseirat market is always crowded, but now more than usual because of the many displaced people,” said Haroun, 29, who is now staying with an uncle. She was looking at outfits for the girls when the first Israeli airstrikes hit, and almost without thinking raced out of the door to go to them. Outside, she found a scene “like the horrors of judgment day”, as panicked crowds tried to escape the coming onslaught. Helicopters and quadcopter drones would soon join the assault that …

‘Bodies everywhere’: the horrors of Israel’s strike on a Rafah camp | Israel-Gaza war

‘Bodies everywhere’: the horrors of Israel’s strike on a Rafah camp | Israel-Gaza war

It took nearly half an hour for the first ambulances and firefighters to reach the stretch of blazing tents in the Kuwait peace camp in Rafah on Sunday night. The crowding and rubble that slowed the passage of emergency vehicles fuelled the spread of flames through the temporary homes of the displaced. Zuhair, a 36-year-old lawyer, had been sitting on a road near his own tent, watching the news with friends as the last glimmers of twilight faded from the sky, when an explosion shook the area at about 8.45pm. He raced towards the sound, terrified for his wife, children and friends. A vision of hell lay ahead, so gruesome he started shaking from shock. “I saw bodies everywhere. Children burning. I saw heads without bodies, the injured running around in pain, some alive but trapped inside burning tents.” Israeli airstrike on camp for displaced Palestinians kills 35 in Rafah – video There had been no warning, and for many long minutes, there was no help. He said people tried at first to drag the …

A Holocaust Survivor Will Mark That History Differently After the Horrors of Oct. 7

A Holocaust Survivor Will Mark That History Differently After the Horrors of Oct. 7

KIBBUTZ MEFALSIM, Israel (AP) — When Hamas fighters invaded southern Israel on Oct. 7, the militant group that rules the Gaza Strip perpetrated the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust. So this year’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, which begins on Sunday evening in Israel, carries a heavier weight than usual for many Jews around the world. For Judith Tzamir, a Holocaust survivor from Germany who moved to Israel in 1964, the horrors of Oct. 7 prompted her to mark the somber holiday by making a pilgrimage she has long avoided: She will visit Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp in Poland. Tzamir, whose kibbutz fended off Hamas attackers on Oct. 7, will join 55 other Holocaust survivors from around the world and about 10,000 others participating in the March of the Living. The event recreates the 2-mile (3-kilometer) march from Auschwitz to Birkenau, where approximately 1 million Jews were killed by Nazi Germany. The event, now in its 36th year, usually draws thousands of participants, including Holocaust survivors and Jewish students, leaders and politicians. This year, …

Horrors from Above: Eclipses, Comets, and Human Dread

Horrors from Above: Eclipses, Comets, and Human Dread

It is a rare and sublime thing to find oneself in the totality of a solar eclipse. Day turns to night, stars and planets emerge from a formerly blue sky, and temperatures plummet. Words like “awe” and “amazement” might come to mind. But there’s another sensation that can lurk close behind these: terror. Throughout history, solar eclipses have evoked not only wonder but also feelings of doom and fear. In 1831, a forthcoming eclipse caused a mild social panic in America. One newspaper reported that among the populace, there suddenly came “a kind of vague fear, of impending danger—a prophetic presentiment of some approaching catastrophe.” Some loudly predicted the end of the world was at hand. Such fears did not diminish in the face of astronomers’ assurances that what was coming was safe and natural. Historically, humans have felt vulnerable in the face of major celestial events. The order and fixity of the universe gets wobbly. People project onto the skies their most primal fears. When the daytime sky suddenly darkens, or when a mysterious …

Who Trolled Amber Heard?: Inside the podcast exposing the horrors of the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial

Stay ahead of the trend in fashion and beyond with our free weekly Lifestyle Edit newsletter Stay ahead of the trend in fashion and beyond with our free weekly Lifestyle Edit newsletter In April 2022, it was impossible to escape Depp v Heard. Even if you weren’t streaming every second of the court proceedings between Johnny and Amber, your feeds were undoubtedly clogged with related content. And by “related content” I mean content that primarily trashed Amber Heard. Perhaps you saw tweets declaring #JusticeForJohnny and #AmberIsAnAbuser, or watched people hammily acting out scenes from their marriage on TikTok, layered over with audio of Heard alleging domestic and sexual abuse by the actor, like a dystopian pantomime. Or perhaps you found the trial slipping into your offline, “real” life when getting coffee – the tip jars labelled “Amber” and “Johnny”, with wads of cash stuffed into Depp’s. At the time, a few journalists and legal experts covering the trial, such as Kat Tenbarge and Lucia Osborne-Crowley, smelt a rat, and suggested that at least some of …

Little Shop of Horrors’ Evan Rachel Wood, Darren Criss Off-Broadway Interview

Little Shop of Horrors’ Evan Rachel Wood, Darren Criss Off-Broadway Interview

It’s early afternoon on a Friday when Darren Criss and Evan Rachel Wood pick up the phone, just five days before they are set to debut as the new Seymour and Audrey in off-Broadway‘s Little Shop of Horrors. Both are on their way to the Westside Theatre stage for their first top-to-bottom run-through, taking over the complicated but beloved characters based on Roger Corman’s 1960 horror comedy and deftly adapted for the stage by theater legends Howard Ashman (book and lyrics) and Alan Menken (music). Now in the fifth year of the U.S. revival of the dark goings-on of a Skid Row flower shop, several notable names have left their mark on the show: Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan, Conrad Ricamora, Corbin Bleu, Constance Wu, Maude Apatow, Tammy Blanchard and Lena Hall. But none quite like this, as an intentional leap together among friends. As the interview begins, Wood — who is already at the theater — openly wonders whether she should take the elevator down to where she’ll soon meet co-star and friend Criss, before quickly interjecting that “you might …

Inside Josef Fritzl’s house of horrors: Where is it and what happened to it | World | News

Austrian sex offender Josef Fritzl’s house of horrors where he imprisoned his daughter for years has been divided into separate flats and rented out. Fritzl, now 88, was jailed in 2009 for life after keeping his daughter locked up in an underground dungeon for 24 years. He has now been granted conditional release and has been spotted for the first time out of prison in 15 years as he arrived at Landesgericht District Court for a hearing. His home, however, is not sitting empty while he serves time in jail, it has been reported. His home in Amstetten, Austria, has been split up into nine flats and rented out, despite it being the location where he raped and fathered seven children with his daughter. “All nine apartments are rented out,” the owners told the Mirror. “There are young people among them who have no connection to the Fritzl case.” While all the flats are rented out, the owners added that the basement where Elisabeth was tortured has been filled with concrete. The garage has also …

eBay Paying Million for Sending Box of Horrors to Its Enemies

eBay Paying $3 Million for Sending Box of Horrors to Its Enemies

That’s one way to do it! Spidey Sense Corporations have gone after critics by deploying a whole range of skullduggery, from racketeering charges to death threats. But for zealots at eBay, their retribution of choice was apparently a box of live spiders. The online giant now has to pay a $3 million criminal penalty after the company harassed a Massachusetts couple who run a news website, EcommerceBytes Blog, and for attempting to deter the ensuing investigation, according to a statement from the US Department of Justice. In August 2019, several company employees sent “anonymous and disturbing deliveries to the victims’ home, including a book on surviving the death of a spouse, a bloody pig mask, a fetal pig and a funeral wreath and live insects,” the Justice Department says. eBay employees also sent anonymous messages threatening to track the couple and even resorted to using Craigslist by “inviting the public for sexual encounters at the victims’ home,” the Justice Department says. “Senior executives at eBay were frustrated with the newsletter’s tone and content, and with the …

Bombed, then stabbed: West Bank doctors recall horrors of refugee camp raid | Israel-Palestine conflict

Bombed, then stabbed: West Bank doctors recall horrors of refugee camp raid | Israel-Palestine conflict

The Israeli raids on the Nur Shams and Fawwar refugee camps followed a pattern of deadly assaults that have killed more than 300 people in the West Bank since October 7, say doctors and politicians. Fawwar, occupied West Bank — It was one o’clock at night when the casualties started arriving at Thabet Thabet Governmental Hospital in the city of Tulkarem. There were six of them, all with critical wounds, said Dr Iyad al-Aqqad, the hospital’s medical director. They were victims of an Israeli bombing on the Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem, during a raid that started on the night of December 26 and continued into the early hours of the following day. It was the second time in 24 hours that Israeli forces had stormed the camp, entering several homes, and dropping at least two bombs, including on an industrial facility. Israeli soldiers are often accused — both in the occupied West Bank and in the Gaza Strip — of not allowing ambulances to reach the wounded promptly. That is what happened in …
