Why people with autism struggle to get hired

Why people with autism struggle to get hired

First impressions matter − they shape how we’re judged in mere seconds, research shows. People are quick to evaluate others’ competence, likability and honesty, often relying on superficial cues such as appearance or handshake strength. While these snap judgments can be flawed, they often have a lasting impact. In employment, first impressions not only affect hiring choices but also decisions about promotion years later. As a researcher in cognitive science, I’ve seen firsthand how first impressions can pose a challenge for individuals with autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. People with ASD often display social behaviors − such as facial expressions, eye contact, gestures and sense of personal space − that can differ from those of neurotypical individuals. These differences are often misunderstood, leading people with ASD to be perceived as awkward, odd or even deceptive. People form these negative impressions in just seconds and report being reluctant to talk to, hang out with or even live near people on the spectrum. It’s not surprising, then, that unfavorable first impressions create barriers for people with ASD …

Trump Media’s Newly Hired Auditing Firm Was Just Busted by the SEC for ‘Massive Fraud’

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday charged an auditing firm hired by Trump Media and Technology Group just 37 days ago with “massive fraud” — though not for any work it performed for former President Donald Trump’s media company. The SEC charged the accounting firm BF Borgers and its owner, Benjamin F. Borgers, with “deliberate and systematic failures” in more than 1,500 audits. The charges include failing to abide by accounting rules, fabricating documentation to cover up its shortcomings, and falsely stating in audit reports that its work met audit standards. To settle the SEC charges, BF Borgers agreed to pay a $12 million fine while its owner agreed to pay a fine of $2 million, according to the SEC. Benjamin Borgers did not immediately return a call seeking comment. BF Borgers and Benjamin Borgers also agreed to permanent suspensions, effective immediately, that will prevent them handling SEC-related matters as accountants. The company had previously cycled through at least two other auditors — one that resigned the account in July …

Apple Hired Dozens of AI Experts From Google for a Secretive Zurich Research Lab

Apple has poached dozens of artificial intelligence experts from Google and created a “secretive European laboratory” in Zurich to house a new team of staff tasked with building new AI models and products, according to a paywalled Financial Times report. Based on an analysis of LinkedIn profiles conducted by FT, Apple has recruited at least 36 specialists from Google since 2018, when it poached John Giannandrea to be its top AI executive. Apple’s main AI team works out of California and Seattle, but the company has recently expanded offices dedicated to AI work in Zurich, Switzerland. Apple’s acquisition of local AI startups FaceShift (VR) and Fashwell (image recognition) is believed to have influenced its decision to build a secretive research lab known as “Vision Lab” in the city. According to the report, employees based in the lab have been involved in Apple’s research into the underlying technology that powers OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot and similar products based on large language models (LLMs). The focus has been on designing more advanced AI models that incorporate text and …

At the time, episode five of his bombshell documentary had just aired on HBO. The series investigated the three murder investigations facing multimillionaire real estate heir Durst and would eventually lead to the subject’s lifetime prison sentence. Durst was first suspected of killing his wife, Kathleen Durst, after her mysterious disappearance in 1982; her body has never been found. In 2001, he was arrested for the murder of his neighbour Morris Black – only to be acquitted of all charges after claiming he acted in self-defence. The Jinx’s penultimate episode revealed new evidence that connected Durst to the murder of his best friend Susan Berman in 2000. “We learnt …

TikToker blasted for saying “SNL” has never hired a hot woman

TikToker blasted for saying “SNL” has never hired a hot woman

In a now viral video posted to TikTok, a user who goes by the name Jahelis makes the truly wild declaration that in just under 50 years, “Saturday Night Live” has never cast a “hot woman” as part of the show’s core ensemble. And the reactions to that swing and miss have not been favorable.  “They all just kind of have looks that eventually grow on you,” Jahelis says, using current cast member Heidi Gardner as her first example although, in the clip, she blanks on her name while repeatedly using the word “skit” when it should be “sketch.” Being that “Saturday Night Live” is a sketch comedy show and all. “They make every skit that she’s in — at least one skit per episode she’s in — being like where she plays someone super hot and super dumb and the point of the joke is that she’s super pretty. And it always makes me laugh because, no offense to her, but she’s not that pretty,” she says of Gardner, later adding, “Why don’t they hire better looking people? It’s TV?” …

Signs You Hired The Wrong Divorce Attorney | Susan Pease Gadoua

Finding a divorce attorney is easy. Finding the right attorney is the trick. If you look in your local Yellow Pages, you will see that attorneys can have many types of specializations and there’s often no shortage of them. When most people are about to embark on a divorce and need to find a legal professional, they call their neighbor, cousin, sister, or best friend and ask for their attorney’s name and number. This is the WORST thing you can do, (unless you don’t mind gambling with your life!). The place to start is to spend some time researching the various ways you can get divorced, decide which model is best for you, and then find an attorney who practices the model you choose. There is self-representation, mediation, collaboration, and litigation. If you begin by looking for the attorney first, you will end up with the modality your attorney practices, and it’s possible that isn’t right for your case. You can still ask others who they hired and if they were happy with their choice, …

Fisker has reportedly hired bankruptcy consultants [Updated, Fisker responds]

Fisker has reportedly hired bankruptcy consultants [Updated, Fisker responds]

Fisker has reportedly hired “restructuring advisers to assist with a possible bankruptcy filing,” according to the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. Update: Fisker responded with a statement, included below. Fisker has been going through a rough time lately, with its stock possibly being delisted due to low share prices. It also indicated in its recent quarterly report that there is “substantial doubt” that it can continue operating, and that it was seeking outside investment. This despite a 300% jump in deliveries in Q4, quite an accomplishment from one quarter to the next. And not long after Fisker’s quarterly report, there was news that they might have found that outside investment in the form of “advanced” discussions with Nissan, who reportedly seek a partnership on electric trucks. Fisker did unveil a future pickup truck, called “Alaska,” last year, and that truck does happen to look a lot like a Nissan Frontier. Fisker also recently announced two other future vehicle designs, the compact Pear and the Ronin sportscar. Fisker has claimed that it does make money on …

Ageism Haunts Some Tech Workers in the Race to Get Hired

Ageism Haunts Some Tech Workers in the Race to Get Hired

The US economy is showing remarkable health, but in the tech industry, layoffs keep coming. For those out of work, finding a new position can become a full-time job. And in tech—a sector notoriously always looking for the next hot, new thing—some people whose days as fresh-faced coders are long gone say that having decades of experience can feel like a disadvantage. Ageism is a longtime problem in the tech industry. Database startup RelevantDB went viral in 2021 after it posted a job listing bragging, “We hire old people,” which played off industry stereotypes. In 2020, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found that IBM had engaged in age discrimination, pushing out older workers to make room for younger ones. (The company has denied engaging in “systemic age discrimination.”) A recent LinkedIn ad that shows an older woman unfamiliar with tech jargon saying her son sells invisible clouds triggered a backlash from people who say it unfairly portrayed older people as out of touch. In response, Jim Habig, LinkedIn’s vice president of marketing, says: “This …
