‘It looked like a UFO’: hiker discovers mysterious silver monolith in Powys | Wales

When Craig Muir spotted an object while hiking the summit of a hill, he thought he was having a close encounter of the third kind. However, while (apparently) not a UFO, the shiny, silver monolith in a muddy patch of Powys uplands was strikingly mysterious. “When I first saw it, I was a bit taken aback as it looked like some sort of a UFO,” said Muir, a builder who lives in Hay-on-Wye nearby. “It seemed like a very fine metallic [material], almost like a surgical steel. The steel structure was almost 10ft long and looked perfectly levelled and steady, despite the weather being windy.” Following a spate of monoliths appearing around the world in 2020 – in the Isle of Wight, Romania and the Utah desert – conspiracy theorists speculated that aliens could be behind the structures. Since there is no way to drive up to the top of the Hay Bluff hill, Muir suggested it could have been taken by a group of people or dropped off by the helicopter on its spot. …

Family of Snowdonia hiker missing for almost seven weeks ‘praying for a miracle’ | UK News

The family of a hiker who has been missing for nearly seven weeks say they are “praying for a miracle”. Klare Brookfield, the daughter-in-law of David Brookfield, told Sky News he is the “heart of [their] family”. North Wales Police said the 65-year-old was last seen in the Carneddau area of Eryri (also known as Snowdonia) on 9 January. Ms Brookfield said the “well-experienced walker”, who ran his own walking group, planned to walk up Carnedd Llewelyn and then Carnedd Dafydd. His wife received a text message from him to say he had reached the summit of Carnedd Llewelyn. The family believe he was on his way to Carnedd Dafydd, but that text message was the last time they heard from him. “We are all devastated. He is a much loved dad, grandfather, great-grandad and brother. We just need to find him,” Ms Brookfield said. He had recently retired from his job as a transport and warehouse manager and had been “looking forward to many adventures with his wife Lesley in their campervan”, she said. …

Body of missing hiker, 22, recovered from California mountain amid heavy snow

Body of missing hiker, 22, recovered from California mountain amid heavy snow

The body of 22-year-old woman who went missing for more than a week while hiking at a mountainous beauty spot during heavy winter weather was found and recovered Sunday night, police said. Lefei Huang, from El Monte, went missing Feb. 4 and was only found over the weekend after a member of the public flying a drone spotted her body Friday. Search operations were hindered by the snowstorms and high winds which have affected high-altitude parts of California for much of the winter. Law enforcement agencies used the incident to warn the public not to set out alone in bad weather — Huang went hiking just before a “atmospheric river” storm was due to hit the West Coast, which brought historic levels of rain and flooding to towns and cities, and high levels of snow in the mountains. Huang departed alone on a hike at 2 p.m. Feb. 4 in the Mount Baldy area of the San Gabriel Mountains and was not seen again, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said. The sheriff’s department received …

‘I’m going to die’: hiker recalls harrowing night trapped under 10,000lb boulder | California

A hiker who spent hours trapped and badly injured under a nearly 10,000lb boulder on a remote California mountainside has spoken out about the ordeal, saying he thought to himself: “I’m going to die up here.” Kevin DePaolo was hiking with a friend in the Inyo mountains earlier this month when the rock unexpectedly dislodged, he told the New York Times in one of his first interviews since the accident on 5 December. It crushed his legs and came to a stop on his right leg. The mishap left DePaolo stuck with serious injuries and intense pain for 10 hours, and required a huge effort by rescuers to free him. DePaolo, an experienced hiker, said he was digging in the sand on a hillside near Santa Rita Flat looking for rocks when the boulder came loose and landed on him, which he said felt like “getting hit by a fridge”. His friend, Joshua Nelson rushed to DePaolo’s aid, using a pickaxe to try to prevent the boulder from further crushing him. Nelson was able to …

Glacial melting had revealed a boot and crampon and other remains that were later identified as belonging to the German climber. Police from Valais canton said in a statement: “DNA analysis enabled the identification of a mountain climber who had been missing since 1986.” “In September 1986, a German climber, who was 38 at the time, had been reported missing after not returning from a hike.” The police did not provide additional information on the climber’s identity or the circumstances of his death.
