5 Questions With Dr. Hugh Mighty on Diversity and Health Care | Healthiest Communities Health News

Key Black leaders in health care converged in the nation’s capital this week to take part in a two-day summit focused on health equity, examining how approaches are evolving to meet the needs of vulnerable communities and how executives can address hurdles and headwinds standing in the way of meaningful change. Among the summit’s participants was Dr. Hugh Mighty, senior vice president for health affairs at Howard University – one of the few historically Black colleges and universities in the U.S. with a medical school. U.S. News & World Report caught up with Mighty – an OB-GYN with extensive experience in medical higher education – to discuss the current state of efforts to improve diversity, equity and inclusion within health care, as well as the direction those efforts need to go. CDC: Syphilis Rate Among Pregnant Women Has More Than Tripled | Healthiest Communities Health News

The U.S. rate of maternal syphilis cases rose 221.6%, from 87.2 infections per 100,000 births in 2016 to 280.4 per 100,000 in 2022, according to a new report released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. During the same time frame, the total number of annual cases rose from 3,431 to 10,232. Maternal syphilis rates increased each year of the study period, ranging from a 15% rise from 2017 to 2018 to a 32% rise from 2021 to 2022. Syphilis rates increased for mothers of all maternal age groups throughout the study period. The largest increase, of 290%, occurred among those under 20, rising from 107.3 per 100,000 births in 2016 to 418.6 per 100,000 in 2022. Mothers between the ages of 30 and 34 experienced the second-largest percentage increase at 277%, followed by a 239% rise among mothers between the ages of 25 and 29, and a 226% increase in the infection rate among mothers between 20 and 24. Obamacare Enrollment Hits Record High of 21 Million | Healthiest Communities Health News

The number of people who signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplaces hit a record high this season for the third year in a row, with the latest figures released by the Biden administration Wednesday showing more than 21 million people selected a plan between Nov. 1 and mid-January. The total for the latest open enrollment period marks a 30% increase from a year ago, based on past enrollment figures published by the health policy research organization KFF. It’s also an 87% rise from the number of people who signed up in 2020, which saw the lowest enrollment total aside from the first year the marketplaces were up and running in 2014. “For decades, when it came to federal programs we could depend on to keep Americans covered, three were always top of mind – Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, but now it’s crystal clear that we need to add a fourth – the Affordable Care Act,” Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement. “Once …
