Hauser & Wirth’s Elaine Kwok Departs After Two Years

Elaine Kwok, a veteran of the Hong Kong art market, has officially left her position at Hauser & Wirth after a two-year stint. The gallery announced her departure in an email to staff. In that email, which was obtained by ARTnews, Hauser & Wirth’s leadership wrote, “Elaine’s contribution in leading our Asia activities has been invaluable. Her commitment to our artists, programs, clients, and community, along with the successful opening of our new Hong Kong space she spearheaded, has positively shaped both the region and the gallery as a whole.” Related Articles In the interim, the daily operations of the Hong Kong space will now be directly overseen by CEO Mirella Roma. Before her role at Hauser & Wirth, Kwok spent 15 years in various roles at Christie’s Hong Kong. In 2022, she joined Hauser & Wirth as the Asia Managing Partner, a newly created role focused on expanding the gallery’s client base and building institutional relationships in the region. David Lewis on Mounting a Thornton Dial Exhibition at Hauser & Wirth

Editor’s Note: This story is part of Newsmakers, a new ARTnews series where we interview the movers and shakers who are making change in the art world. Next month, Hauser & Wirth will mount an exhibition dedicated to Thornton Dial, one of the late 20th-century’s most important artists. Dial created works in a variety of modes of allegorical paintings to massive assemblages. At its 542 West 22nd Street space in Chelsea, Hauser & Wirth will show eight large-scale works by Dial, ranging from 1988 to 2011. Related Articles The exhibition is organized by David Lewis, who recently joined Hauser & Wirth as senior director after running a taste-making Lower East Side gallery for more than a decade. Titled “The Visible and Invisible,” the exhibition, which opens November 2, looks at how Dial’s art is on its surface a visual and aesthetic feast. Fanny Hauser Tapped as Director of the Kunsthalle Zürich

Vienna-born curator Fanny Hauser has been named the next director of the Kunsthalle Zürich, taking the place of Daniel Baumann, who will be leaving the museum after ten years to work on curatorial projects independently, the museum announced. Hauser will start the new position in January 2025. Currently the deputy director at Ludwig Forum in Aachen, Germany, Hauser is leaving the modern art foundation just more than two years after taking up the position in May 2022. She started her work as a curator in 2016 when she co-founded the contemporary art-focused Kunstverein Kevin Space in Vienna, where she co-curated exhibitions on artists with increasing international reach. Hauser organized shows for Ioana Nemeș, a Romanian artist based in Bucharest, Chinese artists Peng Zuqiang and Evelyn Taocheng Wang who are based in the U.S and Netherlands, respectively, and Algerian artist Lydia Ourahmane, among others. Paul Walter Hauser is ready to fight crime alongside Liam Neeson in the reboot of the Naked Gun franchise. Hauser is set to play Captain Ed in director Akiva Schaffer’s untitled new Naked Gun film that Paramount Pictures plans to release July 18, 2025. George Kennedy previously played the role in the original film trilogy that kicked off with the 1988 comedy The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! Dan Gregor and Doug Mand penned the new movie’s script with Schaffer. The two scribes previously wrote the director’s Emmy-winning Disney+ feature Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins of Fuzzy Door produce the project that is based on the Naked Gun film franchise and the television series Police Squad! from Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker. Daniel M. Stillman serves as executive producer. Hauser joins the cast that includes Neeson and Pamela Anderson. Chris Farley Biopic With Paul Walter Hauser Lands at New Line

New Line Cinema proved to be more highly motivated than the rest of its competition in landing the forthcoming Chris Farley biopic that is set to star Paul Walter Hauser as the late comedy legend. The company has landed director Josh Gad‘s film following a highly competitive situation. Hauser, a recent Emmy winner for his work in Apple TV+’s Black Bird, will star as Farley, the Saturday Night Live standout and star of such films as Tommy Boy who died of a drug overdose in 1997 at age 33. Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (The Disaster Artist, Daisy Jones & The Six) are writing the screenplay based on Tom Farley Jr. and Tanner Colby’s best-selling biography, The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts. The project has the blessing of the Farley family, with SNL creator Lorne Michaels and Erin David serving as producers for Broadway Video. Hauser & Wirth Opens New Gallery Hong Kong Space with Zhang Enli Show

Despite recent speculation about Hong Kong’s primacy waning as a major player in the art world over the past few years, mainly due to domestic political protests and Covid-19 restrictions, mega galleries and global auction houses continue to double down on the city. This week, Hauser & Wirth opened a new street-level gallery space in Hong Kong’s central business district with an inaugural exhibition featuring stunning new works by Chinese artist Zhang Enli. The blue-chip gallery, which first opened in the city in 2018, moved down the road, from their original premises on the 15th and 16th floors in the famed art gallery cluster at H Queen’s to a three-floor, 10,000-square-foot space designed by Selldorf Architects on 8 Queen’s Road Central, at the main road’s junction with the historic Ice House Street, and Duddell Street.
