Eye Movement Therapies, Purple Hats, and the Sagan Standard

Eye Movement Therapies, Purple Hats, and the Sagan Standard

Editor’s note: Gerald Rosen and Gerald Davison coined the term purple hat therapy as a metaphor for treatment packages such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) that combine essential elements (cognitive and behavioral techniques) and nonessential elements (eye movements). Wikipedia now has a page dedicated to this concept. In the 1980s, several novel psychotherapeutic techniques were proposed for the rapid cure of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). At the forefront of these “power therapies” was Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a method developed by Francine Shapiro (1948–2019) and still commonly used today. Shapiro reported a 100 percent success rate treating trauma memories with multi-saccadic eye movements, and she assured clinicians who read her report that they could use eye movements to “achieve complete desensitization of 75–80% of any individually treated trauma-related memory in a single 50-minute session” (Shapiro 1989, 221). Shapiro then offered workshops that introduced her treatment to thousands of clinicians. Over time, EMDR came to enjoy the sun of scientific endorsement. We offer a less than sanguine view of EMDR, believing that …

Cowboy hats, the Hulk and short shorts: the final days of Olympics fashion – in pictures | Fashion

Teams including France, pictured here, have been competing in the artistic swimming – formerly known as synchronised swimming – at the aquatics centre north of Paris. When synchro was introduced at the 1984 Olympics, the New York Times declared it one of the new Olympic ‘glamour events’. A focus on the bedazzled costumes and aesthetics, according to Time, cemented ‘the idea that the world of competitive synchro was a feminine, performative domain’. This year, for the first time, men were allowed to compete, although none did. Watch this space for LA 2028 Source link

Horses, hats and high fashion

Horses, hats and high fashion

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is full of spectacle, whether in the stables, on the track, or in the stands. The horses, glistening with mud and sweat, are on show for a crowd of 150,000 to see. While they parade around in their saddles and horseshoes before the big race, so do the fans, though with different accoutrements: most famously, towering hats made of everything from satin and feathers to cardboard replicas of Churchill Downs. Photographer Lili Kobielski has photographed the Kentucky Derby for the better part of a decade. Here, she takes us to America’s longest continuously held sporting event on its 150th anniversary for a glimpse of the grit and glamour. Source link

Red Hat’s latest enterprise Linux distro has new features to tackle hybrid cloud complexity

Red Hat’s latest enterprise Linux distro has new features to tackle hybrid cloud complexity

gremlin/Getty Images Some people update to the latest version of an operating system as soon as it’s available. Others hang on to their old operating system until it’s covered in cobwebs and dust. Red Hat lets you do both. The Linux and hyper-cloud leader today released its newest flagship Linux distro, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.4, after last week announcing four more years of support for the popular, decade-old RHEL 7.9. Also: Ubuntu 24.04: This great new Linux distro isn’t just fast – it’s a fortress Don’t expect to see this kind of extended life for other RHEL versions. Unlike Canonical, which has given 12 years of support to all long-term support (LTS) versions of Ubuntu, Red Hat is giving RHEL 7 Extended Life Cycle Support (ELS) — a one-time, additional four years of support. This means that instead of RHEL 7.9 leaving support on June 30, 2024, you can now get maintenance support with security patches and bug fixes for RHEL 7.9 until June 30, 2028. Of course, what Red Hat really wants you to do is …

Abortion foes settle lawsuit against museum over pro-life hats

Patrons enter the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum for the public reopening of the museum’s west end galleries on the National Mall in Washington, U.S. October 14, 2022. Jonathan Ernst | Reuters The National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., agreed to settle a lawsuit by a group of students, parents, and chaperones from a Catholic school in South Carolina who were told by security guards to remove hats bearing an anti-abortion message during a visit there last year, a court filing Monday revealed. The federally funded museum agreed to pay the more than a dozen plaintiffs a total of $50,000 to settle the suit, according to the filing in U.S. District Court in Washington. The payment includes attorneys’ fees. The settlement also calls for the museum’s director to give the plaintiffs a tour of the facility, which is the largest of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, and for the director to apologize to them for the guards’ actions on Jan. 20, 2023, the filing says. And the Smithsonian agreed to notify security personnel …

7 of the Most Popular Hats in History

7 of the Most Popular Hats in History

Since the very beginning of civilization, and probably even before, hats have formed an important function in human society. Designed not just for protective reasons but for aesthetics, hats became associated with popular fashion, becoming associated with groups of people and national identities, as well as the wearer’s standing in society.   They have been made from all sorts of materials, from leather and fur to cotton, felt, wool, and even plastic.   Like the cherry on top of a cake, hats became the finishing touch of outfits throughout the millennia. Different styles became predominant in different places and at different times.   Here are 7 of the most popular hats in history.   1. Hats off! It’s Tom Kerridge’s Easter recipes: shoulder of lamb, onion tart and a hot cross bun bread and butter pudding | Tom Kerridge

The watery reaches of Buckinghamshire, beloved of bankers and 1980s celebrities, have been subject to so much flooding in recent winters that posh new houses are built to float. Though the future of this countryside is uncertain, the desire for pubs in a town like Marlow remains and Tom Kerridge owns three on the high street: the Hand & Flowers (two Michelin stars, Cornish “tin mine” tart on the menu); the Coach (one Michelin star, turbot scotch egg); and the Butcher’s Tap and Grill, with a sister pub in London’s Chelsea, which is “basically lumps of meat”, as Kerridge puts it. The Butcher has a real butcher’s in the bar area complete with tangy aromas. Men in woollen coats pop in to buy grass-fed bavette steaks and Blur’s The End plays over the sound system. Kerridge is striding down Marlow High Street on a mobile phone, deep in business – then he swings in. His sweatshirt is covered in mock heavy-metal insignia, running up and down the sleeves like tattoos: a snake on a crucifix, …

Bright colours and extravagant hats take over Cheltenham Festival fashion

Bright colours and extravagant hats take over Cheltenham Festival fashion

Stay ahead of the trend in fashion and beyond with our free weekly Lifestyle Edit newsletter Stay ahead of the trend in fashion and beyond with our free weekly Lifestyle Edit newsletter Rainy weather at Cheltenham Festival didn’t stop racegoer fashion from being bright and bold. Zingy colours seemed to herald the coming of spring, with outfits in all shades of the rainbow – from vibrant yellows to vivid blues. And it wasn’t just enough to wear bright colours, but there also seemed to be a trend for clashing hues – think blue coats worn with pink accessories, or a green suit paired with a peach coat. If racegoers weren’t wearing bright colours, then they were experimenting with print. This was seen in houndstooth suits with matching jackets – which seemed to be an overwhelming trend – as well as more subtle tweed and tartan patterns. The second day of Cheltenham has historically been dubbed ‘Ladies Day’, but it’s now been renamed ‘Style Wednesday’ in a gender-neutral rebrand. The day has typically encouraged female racegoers …

Jan 6 pinball machine, bedazzled hats with Trump hair and woke tears water at CPAC Day One | US | News

There was no shortage of Donald Trump-inspired attractions and paraphernalia at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) near Washington, D.C., on Thursday. The four-day event includes notable speakers such as former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Gov. Kristi Noem, former US Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, former Trump campaign strategist Steve Bannon, and the former president himself. The Gaylord Convention Center was decked out for CPAC this weekend, with one hall full of different shops and activities for MAGA fans. Among the many things to see in the centre was a large Trump campaign bus parked in the middle of the hall, with messages from Trump supporters written across it. There were bedazzled MAGA hats, purses, and jewellery, and baseball caps with Trump’s hair even sticking out of them. READ MORE: Proof that Donald Trump has a plan ready from day one if he wins back the White House It was also American flag galore at the conference, where flag-covered dresses, sweaters, and shoes were up for purchase. Stands with cigars and “wanted” Trump signs, “patriot” pinwheels, handmade …
