Milton Disrupted the Flow of Drinking Water—so Florida Deployed a Machine to Harvest It From Air

Milton Disrupted the Flow of Drinking Water—so Florida Deployed a Machine to Harvest It From Air

David Stuckenberg, cofounder and chief operations officer at Genesis Systems, explains that the WaterCube uses proprietary liquid and solid sorbents—materials that absorb water—that essentially “form a handshake with the water in the air.” The machine then heats these materials to extract the water. Atmospheric water generators typically require a substantial amount of energy to run, but Stuckenberg claims the company’s materials work 400 percent better than those that are currently commercially available, and that they have a very high affinity for water. But the tech comes at a steep price. The WaterCube delivered to St. Petersburg is listed at $860,000. The company just started selling a second, smaller device for home use called the WaterCube 100, which retails for $20,000 and is about the size of an HVAC system. That device can generate about 100 to 200 gallons of water per day. Efficiency ranges from 0.07 to 0.8 kilowatt-hours per gallon of water and costs anywhere from $10 to $80 a day to operate, depending on cost of energy and humidity. A WaterCube can run …

Groundbreaking quantum computers harvest and teleport energy from empty space

Groundbreaking quantum computers harvest and teleport energy from empty space

Harvesting energy using quantum computing might sound futuristic, but researchers at Purdue University in the US have turned this concept into reality. By leveraging quantum physics principles, they achieved something once considered a mere thought experiment—using quantum entanglement to teleport energy, store it, and potentially use it in practical applications. This idea, proposed over a decade ago, has now been realized with recent advancements in quantum technology. Quantum physics is an evolving field filled with unknowns. New theories often emerge and undergo extensive testing before becoming established principles that guide our understanding. Quantum computing chip. Kais and his team discovered how to use qubits—the fundamental components of quantum computing—to store this teleported energy effectively. (CREDIT: IBM) One such principle is that a perfectly empty space—often called a vacuum—doesn’t truly exist in the quantum realm. Even if space were devoid of atoms, tiny quantum fields would still linger, manifesting phenomena like quantum entanglement. The Concept of Teleporting Energy Quantum entanglement is one of the most intriguing phenomena in quantum physics. It describes a situation where particles …

‘Water everywhere’: Shropshire farmers race to salvage harvest after record rain | Farming

With his farm almost entirely surrounded by the banks of the River Severn in north Shropshire, Ed Tate is used to flooding on his land – but this year, the sheer level of rainfall is the worst he has ever seen. He points to a field where about 20% of wheat crops have failed as they have been covered with rainwater that has pooled in muddy puddles, in areas that would usually be a sea of green by now. Over the hill, he struggles to drive his off-road vehicle through boggy fields saturated with water while the rain continues to fall around him. “I think in living memory this is the worst winter we’ve had, just because of the duration of wet weather we’ve seen, and we’ve got a lot of failing crops,” said Tate, who has been running his 800-acre mixed arable and livestock farm just outside Shrewsbury for about 20 years. “We’re losing tens of thousands of pounds and there’s just no support. It does mean we’re going to have to look at …

Europe farmers facing chaos as worst wine harvest recorded in 62 years | World | News

European farmers have launched a number of audacious protests in recent months, with tractors blocking motorways and dumping manure on roads. However, the farmers have been dealt a new devastating blow as a key EU export – wine – suffered its worst harvest in 62 years. The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), representing 75 percent of the world’s vineyard area, revealed that wine harvests had dried up across most of Europe. In the EU bloc, wine production declined by 10 percent last year – the second-lowest recorded volume of wine this century. The figures are even worse than initial estimates made in November. Agricultural experts blamed climate change and “extreme environmental conditions” including droughts and fires that have been driving the downward trend in production. They also blamed heavy rain for causing flooding and fungal diseases across major wine-producing regions. France is the only European country to buck the falling harvest trend, with a four percent rise in the past year, making it by far the world’s biggest wine producer. Italy was one …

It also celebrated the ‘continued premiumisation’ of the brand, with Chapel Down’s average selling price up 13 per cent for 2023. The business closed out the year with a successful listing on AIM last December. It’s now looking to the future with the planting of the Boxley Abbey vineyard on the North Downs of Kent, growing its area share of UK planted vineyards to almost 10 per cent – with plans also to begin planting at Buckwell this spring.
