Alone in the Dark review – Jodie Comer and David Harbour can’t save this soporific horror | Games

It’s fitting that this latest Alone in the Dark game should choose a generational curse for its premise, as the series that pioneered the survival horror genre hasn’t been good in about 30 years. Its various misadventures include the disastrous 2008 game of the same name, which among many strange design decisions included a button dedicated to blinking. Yet at least it was terrible in an interesting way, which is more than can be said for this dull and derivative reimagining of the game that started it all. Set in Louisiana in the early 20th century, Alone in the Dark sees Emily Hartwood (Jodie Comer) visiting her uncle Jeremy at the Derceto Manor convalescence home for mentally ill people after receiving a worrying letter from him. So worrying, in fact, that not only has she hired private detective Edward Carnby (David Harbour) to accompany her, but one of the first questions she asks Carnby is whether he’s brought a gun, as she expects he might have to “wave it around a bit” in order to …

Bottled water may harbour hundreds of thousands of nanoplastics per litre

Bottled water may harbour hundreds of thousands of nanoplastics per litre

Microplastics, tiny fragments of plastic debris, have become ubiquitous in our environment, lurking in everything from polar ice to bottled water. Now, scientists have discovered a disturbing new reality: the world of nanoplastics, even smaller plastic particles that pose potentially even greater risks. A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has now revealed that a single litre of bottled water can contain an average of 240,000 detectable plastic fragments, a 10 to 100-fold increase over previous estimates based on microplastics alone. The growing plastic waste crisis This discovery comes amid alarming statistics on global plastic production. We churn out 400 million metric tons annually, with over 30 million tons dumped into the environment or embedded in everyday products. Unlike organic matter, plastics persist, endlessly dividing into ever-smaller particles, potentially reaching molecular levels. Microplastics range in size from 5 millimetres to 1 micrometre, while nanoplastics fall below that threshold. Previous studies on bottled water, sparked by a 2018 finding of 325 particles per litre, had already raised concerns. But good …

Company hit with £100,000 fine after worker at height stood on pallet raised by forklift in Ramsgate Harbour | UK News

A company has been fined £100,000 after one of its employees was spotted working at height while stood on a wooden pallet raised up by a forklift truck. The worker was part of a team of three who were removing heavy equipment from the deck of a boat in Ramsgate Harbour, Kent, in July last year. As scaffolding had been removed, the workers raised a pallet to the deck with a forklift truck and used it as a mobile platform to remove items from the boat. One of the workers was spotted climbing from the side of the vessel, beneath the guard rails, and onto the pallet with a motorised pressure washer. The pressure washer was then lowered to the ground. The worker’s company, Chatham-based European Active Projects Limited (EAP), was fined £100,000 after being prosecuted by the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for breaching Work at Height Regulations. The HSE’s investigation found EAP Limited had failed to plan the work at height associated with the refurbishments being carried out on the boat. This, …
