Georgina Hale death: Bafta-winning Emmerdale actor dies as Doctor Who star leads tributes

Hale was best known for her role in the original London production of Streaming, as well as her performances in the hit UK soaps Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Filmmaker Ken Russell, who cast Hale as the leading lady in a number of his films, described her as “an actress of such sensitivity that she can make the hair rise on your arms”. One of their most successful collaborations was the 1974 film Mahler, the fictionalised biopic in which Hale portrayed Austrian composer Gustav Mahler’s wife. Hale’s show-stopping performance as Alma earned her a Bafta award for Most Promising Newcomer in 1975. Emmerdale and Hollyoaks actress Georgina Hale has died aged 80. BAFTA led tributes to the star who had a film, TV and theatre career spanning five decades. “We’re saddened to learn of the passing of Georgina Hale,” BAFTA said in a post on X. “Well known for her award-winning work in the films of Ken Russell, she was awarded Most Promising Newcomer To Leading Film Roles in 1975.” The cause of death is yet to be confirmed. It is believed she died on 4 January. Filmmaker Jude Rawlins wrote on X: “I am heartbroken that we have lost the magnificent Georgina Hale. She was the greatest and I once told her so on a bus in Swiss Cottage. I wrote a part in my next film for her. Lucy Hale is celebrating another year sans alcohol. On Tuesday, the “Pretty Little Liars” alum, 34, celebrated two years of sobriety in a heartfelt post on social media. Hale illustrated with a chart on Instagram that it’s been 24 months, 731 days and 17,523 hours since she’s been booze free. She also posted a quote by novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald which says, in part, that “it’s never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit.” Hale had said in a November episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that her earliest memory of drinking was on a vacation when she was 12. “This continues to be the greatest gift I’ve given myself.
