Gurman: No Apple Vision Pro 2 Launch Planned Before End of 2026

Apple does not plan to launch a second-generation version of its Vision Pro headset until the end of 2026, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reports. Writing in the latest edition of his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman said Apple’s latest Vision Pro roadmap “doesn’t currently call for a second-generation model until the end of 2026.” In February 2024, he said that the device was “at least 18 months away.” According to Gurman’s sources, Apple is still trying to figure out a way to bring a cheaper version to market before then, although the company remains “flummoxed” by how exactly to bring down the cost. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in February said he believes new Vision Pro models with significant changes to the specification may not enter mass production until 2027. At the time, Kuo said he did expect a modified Vision Pro to enter mass production in late 2025 to early 2026, with Apple focused on improving costs and production. However, this leads him to believe that the “user experience will not differ from the current model.” Indeed, …

Gurman: Apple Working on On-Device LLM for Generative AI Features

Gurman: Apple Working on On-Device LLM for Generative AI Features

Apple is developing its own large language model (LLM) that runs on-device to prioritize speed and privacy, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reports. Writing in his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman said that Apple’s LLM underpins upcoming generative AI features. “All indications” apparently suggests that it will run entirely on-device, rather than via the cloud like most existing AI services. Since they will run on-device, Apple’s AI tools may be less capable in certain instances than its direct cloud-based rivals, but Gurman suggested that the company could “fill in the gaps” by licensing technology from Google and other AI service providers. Last month, Gurman reported that Apple was in discussions with Google to integrate its Gemini AI engine into the iPhone as part of iOS 18. The main advantages of on-device processing will be quicker response times and superior privacy compared to cloud-based solutions. Apple’s marketing strategy for its AI technology will apparently be based around how it can be useful to users’ daily lives, rather than its power. Apple’s broader AI strategy is expected to be revealed …

Gurman: No iPad Announcement Planned for March 26

Gurman: No iPad Announcement Planned for March 26

Earlier this week, leaker “Instant Digital” on Chinese blogging site Weibo claimed that Apple will be making an iPad-related announcement next Tuesday, March 26, suggesting a potential press release introduction ahead of pre-orders and a launch date. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman has now weighed in, however, to say that this claim is “not true.” While disputing a March 26 announcement, Gurman has not shared any specific claims of his own regarding an announcement or launch date for the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models that are in the works, recently pointing to a general time frame of “around the end of March or in April.” Gurman offered a bit more color on the timing in the most recent edition of his Power On newsletter, saying that the “variant of iPadOS 17.4” that will ship on the new iPad models won’t be ready until at least late this month, with it potentially taking “a couple weeks” to get the software installed on the initial shipments. That timing, Gurman says, will likely take things “deeper into next …

Gurman: New iPads to Launch Towards ‘End of March’ or April

Apple plans to release new iPad Pro and iPad Air models “around the end of March or in April,” according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. He also expects new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil accessories for iPads to launch simultaneously. Apple is expected to release a larger 12.9-inch iPad Air In his Power On newsletter on Sunday, Gurman reiterated that Apple is preparing a special build of the already-released iPadOS 17.4 update for the new iPads: Apple is preparing to launch revamped iPad Pros, new iPad Airs (including a 12.9-inch version), a Magic Keyboard and upgraded Apple Pencil. Look for that new hardware around the end of March or in April, as that’s when the accompanying iPadOS 17.4 software should be ready to go. The following iPad-related announcements are expected in the March-April window: Gurman previously ruled out an Apple Event for the new iPads. Instead, the devices will likely be announced in a press release on the Apple Newsroom website, like the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with the M3 chip were last week. …

Gurman: AirPods Pro to Gain ‘Hearing Aid Mode’ in iOS 18

AirPods Pro will gain a new “hearing aid mode” with the release of iOS 18 later this year, according to the latest report by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. Writing in the subscriber edition of his regular Power On newsletter, Gurman claims that the “big news” for AirPods Pro in the near term will be support for a hearing aid-style function when iOS 18 drops in the fall. To be clear, this isn’t the first time we have heard a potential hearing aid feature for AirPods Pro. The first rumor appeared in a 2021 Wall Street Journal report, but it was previously framed as a feature that would be exclusive to a next-generation model of AirPods Pro. However, Apple in September 2022 released the second-generation AirPods Pro, while the company more recently released a refreshed model with a USB-C port. AirPods Pro already offer a Conversation Boost feature, which boosts the volume and clarity of people directly in front of the wearer, but Apple has not advertised the earbuds as a hearing aid device, because this would …

Gurman: Apple May Limit Announcements to New Accessories This Week

Gurman: Apple May Limit Announcements to New Accessories This Week

Apple likely plans to launch a new accessory this week rather than a major product, with stores currently planning for only a minor refresh, predicts Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. The prediction follows a rumor we reported on over the weekend that Apple plans to announce new products with press releases on its website this week. Apple stores are actually planning a larger refresh early next week that is more likely to be related to once of the larger rumored announcements, according to Gurman. These include new iPad Pro models with OLED displays, two new iPad Air models, and new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models. Rumored accessories that we could see before then include at least one new Apple Pencil, and new color options for iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands. A new Magic Keyboard for the ‌iPad Pro‌ with a larger trackpad is also said to be imminent, but Apple is unlikely to launch this prior to new ‌iPad Pro‌ models being announced. One other outlying possibility is a new color option for the iPhone …

Gurman: No Apple Event Planned for Upcoming iPads and Macs

Gurman: Apple Vision Pro 2 at Least 18 Months Away

The second-generation version of Apple’s Vision Pro headset is at least 18 months away from launch, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reports. In the latest edition of his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman said that Apple is likely at least a year and a half away from the release of the second-generation Vision Pro headset, placing launch in late August 2025 at the earliest. Gurman noted that Apple is keenly interested in the reasons why customers who choose to return the first-generation Vision Pro headset do so, ultimately passing feedback from retail stores to the company’s headquarters to help perfect the next version of the device. The tidbit effectively rules out the idea of the Vision Pro receiving annual updates like the iPhone or Apple Watch, suggesting that it is likely to follow a longer refresh cycle that could even surpass that of the iPad. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and market research firm Omdia have previously mentioned a 2027 launch time frame for the second-generation Vision Pro headset. It is said that there could be no hardware updates …

Gurman: New iPads and Macs Likely to Launch in Late March

Apple will likely launch new iPad Air, iPad Pro, and MacBook Air models “around the end of March,” according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. In his Power On newsletter today, he said production is well underway for the new iPad Pro models and a new 13-inch MacBook Air at a minimum within Apple’s supply chain in Asia. Below, we reiterate Gurman’s expectations for the new iPads and Macs, along with other rumored features and changes for the devices. iPad Air The iPad Air lineup is expected to gain a new 12.9-inch display size alongside an updated 10.9-inch model. Rumored and/or likely features for the next iPad Air models include Apple’s M2 chip for faster performance, a redesigned rear camera bump, Wi-Fi 6E support, and Bluetooth 5.3. No major external design changes are expected. The current fifth-generation iPad Air with the M1 chip was released in March 2022. iPad Pro The next 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models are widely expected to be the first iPads equipped with OLED displays. OLED technology would enable the next iPad …

Gurman: Vision Pro Launch ‘Imminent’ as Retail Stores Prepare

Apple’s Vision Pro headset is on the brink of launch as retail stores are beginning final preparations for the device to go on sale, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. In the latest “Power On” newsletter, Gurman said that the Vision Pro is now shipping in small quantities to warehouses across the United States ahead of direct distribution to Apple retail stores. While the company has not yet announced its release date, it apparently believes there will be sufficient stock ready in the country by the end of January to launch in February. Interestingly, Gurman expects Apple to make a Vision Pro-related announcement “in the next week or so” to “take some of the spotlight away from CES,” which starts on Tuesday, January 9. On January 21, all Apple Stores in the United States will hold an unusual three-hour long meeting for all employees that will likely involve training and explanation of the sales procedure related to the device. Further training sessions are apparently planned for the subsequent days, followed by the reception of new inventory …
