Warner Bros. Lets You Watch 31 Films Free Online: David Byrne’s True Stories, Christopher Guest’s Waiting for Guffman, Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep & More

It’s Friday, which means that tonight, many of us will sit down to watch a movie with our family, our friends, our significant other, or — for some cinephiles, best of all — by ourselves. If you haven’t yet lined up any home-cinematic experience in particular, consider taking a look at this playlist of 31 feature films just made available to stream by Warner Bros. You’ll know the name of that august Hollywood studio, of course, but did you know that it put out True Stories, the musical plunge into tabloid America directed by Talking Heads’ David Byrne? Or Waiting for Guffman, the first improvised movie by Christopher Guest and his troupe of crack comedic players like Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, Catherine O’Hara, and Parker Posey? That may already strike many Open Culture readers as the makings of a fine double feature, though some may prefer to watch the early work of another kind of auteur: Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep, say, or Richard Linklater’s SubUrbia (a stage-play adaptation that could well be paired with …

12 Wedding Planning Mistakes Guests Absolutely Hate

12 Wedding Planning Mistakes Guests Absolutely Hate

Wedding season is mostly over, but we’re coming up to the most popular month to get engaged (December). That makes it a great time to reflect on mistakes of weddings gone by and plan for better nuptials to come. At least, that’s what Redditor u/Historical_Ant_1870 of the subreddit r/BigBudgetBrides seemed to encourage. “What are some things that bother you when you go to a wedding? No wrong answers,” they shared into the group. Here are 12 of the most upvoted responses: 1) “Not enough food! No open bar! Bad DJs!” “I know a cash-only or limited bar can be regional/cultural, so it doesn’t bother me that much. BUT you have to warn your guests. I don’t bring my wallet everywhere, and certainly don’t carry much cash.” u/theygotthemustardout 2) ”[Having a huge] break in between [the] ceremony and reception with nothing nearby / no transportation to a bar or anything.” “I get wanting to have your first look down the aisle, but it’s a pain as a guest.” u/oyster167 3) “No seating during cocktail hour.” 4) …

In a recent post shared to the popular “Wedding Shaming” Reddit forum, one person revealed how their friend was invited to an event where guests were encouraged to wear their “best black tie ensemble.” In addition to the dress code, guests were also encouraged to bring sweets – one of which included a “pan of Rice Krispy treats to share.” However, the invited guest revealed they were considering skipping the event. Not only did the Reddit user complain that it’s an afternoon wedding, but they also explained that the wedding will be held outdoors in the middle of October in a state where it’s previously snowed …

Vegan Mom And Daughter Were The Only Guests Not Served A Meal At Her Brother’s Wedding

Vegan Mom And Daughter Were The Only Guests Not Served A Meal At Her Brother’s Wedding

The thing about weddings is that they’re not about us; they’re about the bride and groom, of course. And for the rest of us, that means basically going with the flow — even if the food is bad, the band is terrible, or the drinks are watered down. You just have to roll with the punches, right? But one vegan mom on TikTok took a decidedly different approach to her brother’s wedding, one that has sparked a lot of drama. The vegan mom refuses to buy a wedding gift for her brother because she wasn’t served a meal. Dietary restrictions are pretty common nowadays, and it’s rare that a wedding caterer can’t work with them, even if all they give you is a salad or a plate of vegetables. But that was not the case for vegan therapist and podcaster Danica Moore.  Moore shared her story on TikTok, where she is known as @ingbq, an acronym for her podcast, “I’m Not Gonna Be Quiet.” And it has set off quite a debate about everything from …

Inside King’s garden parties where guests consume 27k cuppas | Royal | News

King Charles’s annual garden parties at Buckingham Palace made a return earlier today, the first one of the season. Traditionally, more than 30,000 guests spend a relaxed afternoon in the scenic grounds of the official London-based royal residence. According to the Royal Family’s official website, the parties are an “important way for His Majesty to speak to a broad range of people from all walks of life”. As reported previously by HELLO!, the annual garden parties host around 8,000 people by invite-only – with around 27,000 cups of tea being served to those in attendance. Confirmed previously by the Royal Family’s website, around 20,000 sandwiches are consumed and 20,000 slices of cake enjoyed by guests. The Duke of Sussex arrived in the UK on Tuesday ahead of his appearance at St Paul’s Cathedral to …

Mom Calls Daughter’s Wedding A Joke Because She Spent 20K But Didn’t Feed Any Guests

Mom Calls Daughter’s Wedding A Joke Because She Spent 20K But Didn’t Feed Any Guests

A mom is questioning whether she might’ve done more harm than good after giving her daughter a stark reality check about how she decided to plan her wedding.  Posting to the subreddit r/AITA, she explained that since her daughter got married, the wedding ceremony has been a huge topic of discussion in their family for all the wrong reasons. She called her daughter’s wedding ‘a joke’ after she spent $20K but didn’t feed the guests. In her since-deleted Reddit post, she explained that her daughter married over a year ago and spent around $20,000 on the ceremony and reception. While it was a wonderful experience for her,  as she married the love of her life, for the wedding guests in attendance, it wasn’t as joyful. Most of the costs were for things she and her new husband could enjoy. “The reasons it sucked for the guest was due to multiple factors. The biggest ones being that [guests had] to buy food, drinks, and no entertainment. So people get to the wedding, and the ceremony happens,” she …

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more The 2024 Met Gala is taking place next month, with the theme of the event dedicated to “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” or 50 historically significant pieces, some of which are far too fragile ever to be worn again. The fashion soirée is set to return to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 6 May 2024, in celebration of the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition. According to Vogue, the annual fashion event will pay homage to the theme through the dress code: “The Garden of Time”. The dress code takes inspiration from a short story of the same title, written by JG Ballard in 1962. Along with the publication’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, there will be four co-chairs of the event: Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya. Held at the museum’s Costume Institute, each guest invited to attend the event is carefully chosen by Wintour. Whenever the Met …

Who’s Going to the 2024 Met Gala? A Look at This Year’s Theme, Guests and How to Watch

The first Monday of May will soon be upon us, and everyone knows what that means: it’s (almost) time for the 2024 Met Gala. This year’s theme — “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” — is a nod to fashion history. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition theme — curated and organized by The Costume Institute — will feature 250 items from its permanent collection displayed in a new, innovative way. The star-studded event — helmed by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour — is an extravagant affair before, during and after, so sit back and take a closer look at what to expect. What Is the Met Gala? The Met Gala is how the star-studded event is commonly referred to, though it’s formally called the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit. Each year, the Met Gala provides the department with its primary source of annual funding for exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, operations, and capital improvements. The first Met Gala kicked off in 1948. A ticket back then was a mere $50, a massive bargain by today’s standards. According to the …
