Sky News has learnt that Lexham Partners, which was established this year by Dominic Perks, is close to agreeing a deal to acquire shareholdings in companies including Paragraf, the graphene-based electronic device company, and Nexeon, a battery technology specialist, from London-listed IP Group. A person close to IP Group said a transaction could be agreed as soon as this week. Anti-assisted dying group got people to hide Christian motives when writing to MPs

Anti-assisted dying group got people to hide Christian motives when writing to MPs

The leading anti-assisted dying group Christian Action, Research and Education (CARE) used Christian reasoning to get its supporters to write to their MPs – but then omitted any Christian language at all from the default email that it got them to send. While recognising that it is essential that all sides are heard in the assisted dying debate, Humanists UK has urged religious groups to be transparent about their motives for opposing assisted dying. CARE hosts on its website a ‘write to your MP’ tool that provides a default message that people can use to write to their MP asking them to oppose assisted dying. MPs Humanists UK has spoken to have reported receiving many emails from people using CARE’s tool. The default text doesn’t mention religion at all but gives as the constituent’s reasons for writing, ‘concern about the very rushed time frame’, inadequate ‘safeguards’, ‘coercive control’, and ‘feeling like a burden on others’. It is unclear if the omission of religion here is deliberate. But it is striking as it stands in contrast …

Rabbinical group calls for stopping offensive military aid to Israel

Rabbinical group calls for stopping offensive military aid to Israel

(RNS) — A rabbinic human rights organization has signed on to a statement calling for an end to offensive military aid to Israel in light of the country’s continued blocking of humanitarian aid to the ravaged Gaza Strip. The group, T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights, made clear it does not favor an end to all military aid. It still supports defensive military aid to Israel, such as the Iron Dome, the missile shields that intercept short-range rockets. But at this time, it is opposed to further offensive weapons such as those decimating the Gaza Strip, where to date more than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed with bombs and munitions that have helped to flatten the enclave and left tens of thousands homeless. “Offensive weapons are keeping the war going, causing horrific damage to Palestinians,” Rabbi Jill Jacobs, T’ruah’s chief executive, told RNS. “It’s not keeping Israelis safe, certainly not getting the hostages back.” On Oct. 13, the Biden administration warned Israel that if it continued blocking humanitarian aid it would constitute violations of …

Group of Waymos Get Confused, Clog Up San Francisco Street

Group of Waymos Get Confused, Clog Up San Francisco Street

“A Waymo standoff.” Touch-and-Go In San Francisco, Google’s Waymo’s driverless taxis are once again causing way-mo problems than expected. In a video posted to TikTok, a bemused onlooker documents one of the company’s Jaguar I-Paces as it causes an autonomous pileup in the city’s notoriously traffic-riddled streets. “The Waymo is stuck because the Waymo is trying to go behind the Amazon [truck],” the bystander explains, “but then it’s stuck behind the Waymo, and oh, my god, there’s another Waymo!” Indeed, as the 35-second clip shows, an Amazon truck got trapped between four of the white Waymo cars. As explicated by the user behind the video, who goes by the handle romokris, there ended up being a 19-car pileup resulting from the mishap. “What’s everybody gonna do?” romokris continues while cracking up. “It is a Waymo standoff! What is gonna happen? Who’s winning? [cackles]” Thankfully, another of the driverless taxis shows up to apparently save the day and shepherd its fellow Waymos back to safe harbor. “That Waymo came through, woo hoo!” the onlooker declares. “Yay!” …

Cross-party group of MPs back move to scrap bishops’ bench

Cross-party group of MPs back move to scrap bishops’ bench

A group of MPs from across the political spectrum has announced their support for an initiative to abolish the bishops’ bench. Last week, Conservative MP Gavin Williamson tabled an amendment to the Government’s hereditary peers bill which would remove what he described as the “injustice” of the House of Lords seats automatically granted to 26 Church of England bishops. Thirteen further MPs have now publicly stated their support for the amendment to the bill, including former shadow chancellor John McDonnell and Labour MP Graham Stringer. The bill is intended to remove hereditary peers: members of the House of Lords who inherit the right to a seat. The National Secular Society wrote to the Government earlier this year urging it to include the removal of the bishops’ bench in its programme of House of Lords reform. It argued the bishops’ bench is “at least as archaic, elitist, unfair and indefensible” as the seats given to hereditary peers. The NSS, which is working with Williamson to build support for the amendment, is encouraging the public to write …

Cleanup Group Says It’s on Track to Eliminate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

It claims it can get rid of the patch within just five years. Trash Hunters Nonprofit environmental organization the Ocean Cleanup has announced that it’s on track to eliminate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 2034. If it can get the necessary funds, that is. In a press release, the organization claimed that eliminating the patch once and for all would cost a whopping $7.5 billion — the “first time both a cost and a timeline has been placed on ridding the Pacific Ocean of the environmental hazard.” The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a name given to an estimated 79,000 metric tons of plastic waste floating in the ocean in an area roughly twice the size of Texas. The Ocean Cleanup has made it its mission to fish it out of the water piece by piece. “Today’s announcement is clear: clean oceans can be achieved in a manageable time and for a clear cost,” said founder and CEO Boyan Slat in a statement. “Through the hard work of the past ten years, humanity has …
