Bid to close Traveller site where ‘guns have been hidden in toilet blocks’

Toilet blocks at a council run Traveller site have allegedly been used to hide guns, Bolton town hall has said. The authority will this week make an application to the courts for a closure order to prohibit access to Crompton Lodge caravan park following a series of alleged incidents. Greater Manchester Police said recent alleged incidents include – firearms and ammo being seized; stolen vehicles and motor parts being recovered; violent offences against staff; stolen dogs being found; cannabis seized and cannabis production evidence being found; plant machinery found; ‘large scale’ incidents of disorder and ‘violence with injury’; criminal damage; fly-tipping; and knife-point robberies. The council and police said the site, in the Moses Gate area of Bolton, which is owned and managed by the local authority, has seen a significant increase in alleged criminal activity and threatening behaviour in recent months. They said alleged incidents involving drugs, serious violent crime and firearms mean the site is no longer safe for residents, including families and young children, visiting council staff or other agencies. He checked to make sure no-one was watching, then struck

After a quick look to check no one was watching, a man in sunglasses brazenly steals a Manchester couple’s parcels. The moment was captured by a camera at the front of their home on Brunswick Street, which has been repeatedly targeted this year. The victim told the Manchester Evening News the problem has been going on for him and his neighbours over the last six months – with items worth thousands of pounds combined being swiped. The video shows a man – wearing a t-shirt and shorts, sunglasses and a black cap worn back-to-front – walking along Brunswick Street with a bag. He steps through a front gate and looks over his shoulder, before picking up at least two parcels from the ground. The man then hurries back out, leaving the gate open, and walks back down Brunswick Street clutching the items. Jealous brother who couldn’t hack his sister’s success JAILED

A jealous brother who repeatedly struck his own sister in a violent attack has been jailed. Adil Ali, 27, was at home with his family when an argument developed between himself and his sibling. Their mother had been speaking to an auntie about her children and of how proud she was of her daughter for getting a law degree and her career, Manchester Crown Court heard. Ali, of Ardwick, began making antagonistic comments about his sister before his sister said if he continued as he was he would ‘end up in prison or in a ditch’. His mum sought to diffuse the argument by telling their daughter to go upstairs. However, Ali followed her and told her she was ‘no better than anyone else’. Angela Rayner Says She Will ‘Step Down’ If She Committed A Crime

Angela Rayner has said she will “step down” as Labour deputy leader if she committed a crime as the police probes claims made over an ex-council house she sold almost a decade ago. On Friday, Greater Manchester Police said it was investigating whether the MP broke electoral law after being accused of providing the wrong information about her living arrangements. The police inquiry was launched following a complaint from deputy Tory chairman James Daly. In response, Rayner issued a statement saying: “I’ve repeatedly said I would welcome the chance to sit down with the appropriate authorities, including the police and HMRC, to set out the facts and draw a line under this matter. I am completely confident I’ve followed the rules at all times. “I have always said that integrity and accountability are important in politics. That’s why it’s important that this is urgently looked at, independently and without political interference. “I make no apologies for having held Conservative ministers to account in the past. Indeed, the public would rightly expect me to do so …

Manchester hit-and-run may have been murder, police believe

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was hit by a Land Rover in Manchester. Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of an unresponsive male on Olympic Street, Beswick, at just before 11am on Saturday. Despite the efforts of members of the public and emergency services at the scene, the victim, a 57-year-old man, was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made but a full investigation is under way, with officers believing the man was hit by a black Land Rover. Detective Inspector Rachel Smith said: “I would like to thank the brave members of public who immediately came to assist the victim as emergency services arrived at the scene. ”This is a tragic incident where a man has lost his life and our priority at this time is supporting his family and getting them the answers they deserve. Police investigating alleged rape by four boys in Morrisons car park fear two girls were attacked

Police investigating an alleged rape by four boys in a Morrisons car park have now said there are two suspected victims. Officers were called to the Newbold area of Rochdale on 10 February and four boys – aged between 12 and 14 – were arrested. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) originally said there was one suspected rape victim. However, in an update, it said two girls are believed to have been attacked and that it was now a rape and sexual assault investigation. The boys were in custody until the early hours of Wednesday before being released on bail. GMP said the two girls had been safeguarded and that extra officers were in the Newbold area to reassure the public. Detective Superintendent Phil Key said: “The four suspects arrested at the weekend have been bailed with strict conditions. “We are continuing to liaise with the CPS to ensure the investigation progresses towards a prosecution. “I can assure the victims and our communities that securing justice is our priority. “As to not impact the possibility of justice …

Mother says she was forced to strip naked in Greater Manchester Police cell

A mother says she was forced to strip naked in a police cell and threatened by officers to drop complaints she had made against them. Dannika Stewart says her complaints against Greater Manchester Police (GMP) led to her being detained and humiliated in a cell, and was told “you need to drop all your complaints against the police”. She told Sky News: “I feel they’ll just be after me now. They will always be after me. I’m scared of what they will do next.” Former GMP detective Maggie Oliver says she believes Dannika is among several complainants “targeted” for “standing up to the police”. Dannika is a subject of an inquiry by Dame Vera Baird, triggered last year after an investigation by Sky News into police strip searches and the treatment of women in custody. The review is due to be published soon and will criticise the police complaints system, Sky News understands. Dannika agreed to tell Sky News her story ahead of the Baird review’s publication. In March 2022, she reported an alleged sexual …
