Gary Glitter won’t be released from prison, Parole Board rules | UK News

Disgraced singer Gary Glitter will not be released from prison, the Parole Board has said. The 79-year-old was recalled to jail less than six weeks after he was released halfway through his 16-year sentence in February last year for breaching his licence conditions by allegedly viewing downloaded images of children. A parole hearing to decide whether he should be freed again was held behind closed doors two weeks ago after a request for it to take place in public was turned down on the grounds that it was too difficult to contact all his victims. A Parole Board panel decided it was “not satisfied that release at this point would be safe for the protection of the public”, it was announced today. Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was jailed in 2015 for sexually abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. Image: Gary Glitter was jailed in 2015. A Fan-Made Film Reconstructs an Entire Tom Waits Concert from His “Glitter and Doom Tour” (2008)

Everybody who’s been to a Tom Waits concert has stories to tell about it — no few of them heard straight from the mouth of Waits himself. The official live album for his 2008 Glitter and Doom tour actually devotes its entire second disc to “a selection of the comic bromides, strange musings, and unusual facts that Tom traditionally shares with his audience during the piano set,” with topics ranging from “the ritual of insects to the last dying breath of Henry Ford.” This after a first disc crafted from musical performances recorded in ten different cities, “from Paris to Birmingham; Tulsa to Milan; and Atlanta to Dublin.” “Tom Waits — Glitter and Doom Concert Experience,” the fan video above, pulls off a similar feat of assemblage, but with a visual component as well. Its creator describes it as “a compilation of professional footage and fan films,” using “all the released soundboard audio that had footage to accompany it to make a concert film that should make a good experience of what it would have …

Disgraced popstar Gary Glitter bids for freedom at parole hearing | UK | News

Disgraced popstar Gary Glitter will bid for freedom on Wednesday as his case will be heard by the parole board. A decision will be made on whether the 79-year-old is allowed to be released from prison. That is despite being accused of showing a “total lack of remorse” towards his victims by lawyers representing a woman who he abused when she was 12 years old and is now suing him. Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was jailed for 16 years in 2015 for abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. His sentence expires in February 2031. He was automatically released from HMP The Verne, a low-security prison in Portland, Dorset, in February last year after serving half of his 16-year fixed-term determinate sentence. But he was sent back inside after less than six weeks. He allegedly breached his licence conditions by viewing downloaded images of children. Parole judges review the cases of criminals who are recalled to prison to decide whether they should be re-released or stay behind bars for the rest of …

Why the EU is banning glitter

Why the EU is banning glitter

CHRISTOPHE ARCHAMBAULT / AFP Are these the last year-end celebrations with glittery decorations and make-up? After six years of discussion, it’s official: “loose glitter” will gradually be banned in the European Union (EU). The measure, which came into force on October 17, 2023 but will be phased in gradually, continues to stir up discussion on the Internet, where people either applaud or fret about the decision. Sam Dylan, a 32-year-old German influencer, expressed his panic to the German tabloid Bild: “In my world, everything has to shine.” The former reality TV contestant recounts buying €180 worth of loose glitter, in anticipation of its disappearance. “The EU is taking away the last sparks of glamour,” snapped Luca Valentino, another German social media star. This measure is part of the European Zero Pollution action plan, which aims to reduce microplastic pollution by 30% by 2030. Producers can dispose of existing stock, but will not be able to produce more. These glittering particles, popular …

‘It’s not easy for me!’: Layton Williams on Strictly, joy, glitter – and the myth of his unfair advantage | Strictly Come Dancing

Lunchtime, in a rehearsal room with big windows overlooking south London life several floors below. When his mind should be on Strictly Come Dancing’s cha-cha-cha, or this week’s salsa, Layton Williams might be found getting distracted by something outside. “I’ll be, ‘Oh, look at the kids having fun in the playground, look at that bird,’ and then Nikita’s, like, ‘Hello? Back in the room!’” To be fair, Williams also works very hard, and it shows. His quickstep in week two of Strictly earned him and his professional partner, Nikita Kuzmin, a mammoth 36 points – a dance so ridiculously fun, fast and joyous, I felt a dopamine hit just watching it. The week after, Williams performed a Viennese waltz, looking beautiful in a long skirt. This Sunday, his disco cha-cha-cha brought the highest score so far. It has been suggested that Williams, who came to prominence in the BBC comedy Bad Education, but began his career at the age of 12 in the stage version of Billy Elliot, has an unfair advantage – he’s a …

Keir Starmer’s speech: Labour has to ignore the glitter and go for gold | Keir Starmer

Keir Starmer’s rousing call for “a decade of national renewal” noted that “democratic rules, democratic values, democratic certainties are under attack”, denounced “the shallow men and women of Westminster” and promised to build a new “partnership between people and politics” (Starmer woos Tory voters as he declares ‘fire of change still burns in Britain’, 10 October). But neither he nor those behind him have yet spelt out how they will transform the way Westminster works, or how our overcentralised government runs Britain. Unless Labour is ready to change the way the UK is governed, and how we recruit and elect our politicians, we may reach the end of a decade of national renewal with an unavoidably disillusioned public turning back to a reinvigorated and more rightwing Conservative party, for lack of any alternative. A new partnership between people and politics, if the phrase means anything, must include a House of Commons less dominated by government, a revival of local government across the country, and a more open and democratic system for electing politicians and holding …

Starmer brushes off the glitter to make coherent case for a Labour government | Labour conference 2023

Keir Starmer would not have wanted a rogue protester to cover him in glitter as he stood up to give his crucial conference speech. But the overall image of a Labour leader sparkling from the stage for an hour ended up doing him no harm. Jacket off and sleeves rolled up, Starmer recovered immediately and made the incident into a virtue, with huge applause from the hall. “This is why we changed our party. Power, not protests,” he quipped. It was not a showy, glittering speech in tone, but over the course of the hour Starmer built up a coherent, overarching case for why Labour should be in government. Although there were no major new announcements, he set out core policies where there is clear difference with the Conservatives. Labour would build 1.5m new houses and overhaul the planning system, “speed ahead” with green projects, and bring in a package of improvements to workers’ rights. It was the strongest statement from Starmer so far on scrapping zero-hours contracts and banning fire and rehire – after …
