Tyler Glasnow named Dodgers opening day starter

PHOENIX —  The Dodgers acquired Tyler Glasnow this winter confident he could become the next ace of their starting rotation. When the team’s regular season begins in South Korea next week, Glasnow won’t have to wait long for his first opportunity to start proving it. Glasnow will be the Dodgers’ opening day starter, the team announced Monday, for its March 20 game against the San Diego Padres at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. He will face veteran Padres right-hander Yu Darvish in the opener. Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start the other game of the series against Joe Musgrove. “It means everything,” Glasnow said of getting the opening day nod. “Just to sign here, that all being a reality feels crazy. Then when they told me I was the opening day starter, I definitely felt a lot of pride and excitement.” Glasnow wasn’t the most expensive addition of the Dodgers’ offseason, which was highlighted by the $700-million signing of two-way star Shohei Ohtani and the $325-million acquisition of Yamamoto. But after being traded to the Dodgers in …

Tyler Glasnow targeting series start for Dodgers in Korea

TEMPE, Ariz. —  The more that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has gotten to know Tyler Glasnow this spring, the more he uses one specific adjective to describe the team’s new frontline — and potentially opening day — starting pitcher. “Very cerebral,” Roberts said Saturday morning, describing his early impressions of Glasnow shortly before the pitcher’s spring debut with the club. “I’ve already learned early that he does a lot of homework,” Roberts added. “He knows his strengths, what he’s good at. And he appreciates the hitters’ weaknesses as well. So, how he attacks each hitter and goes into games, it’s very evident to me that he’s very mindful.” For now, most of Glasnow’s mental energy is expended on his personal preparation for the upcoming season. The veteran right-hander looked a little unsettled in the Dodgers’ Cactus League game against the Angels on Saturday, finishing a 1⅔-inning start with one run, four hits, a walk and a strikeout. “Not, I guess, the greatest in terms of execution,” Glasnow acknowledged. However, Glasnow was still pleased with where he …

Dodgers are hopeful Tyler Glasnow can stay healthy and be an ace

PHOENIX —  For a pitcher who just signed a nine-figure contract extension, who has been mentioned as one of the best natural talents in baseball, and who figures to be one of the key cogs for this season’s Dodgers team, Tyler Glasnow’s personal goals for 2024 might seem rather modest. “I just wanna stay healthy this year,” the long-haired, long-limbed and oft-injured right-hander said at the start of spring training this week. “And make all my starts.” The Dodgers, of course, are expecting much more from the new co-ace of their remade rotation. They dealt a sizable trade package to the Tampa Bay Rays to acquire Glasnow this offseason — giving up highly touted pitching prospect Ryan Pepiot and outfield prospect Jonny DeLuca — in hopes the 30-year-old flamethrower could fill the club’s void of true front-line pitching talent. They extended Glasnow on a five-year, $136.5-million contract — the most guaranteed money a Dodgers pitcher had received under president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, until Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s MLB-record signing a week later — with the idea …
