Cancelled Glasgow book festival Aye Write receives lifeline donation | Books

Aye Write, the Glasgow literary festival that was cancelled last month after its funding application was turned down by Creative Scotland has announced that it will present a slimmed programme after an “unexpected, but very welcome” £65,000 donation. The donation, from a foundation set up by the late lottery winner Colin Weir, will help fund a series of pop-up events throughout 2024, featuring authors including David Nicholls, Val McDermid and Lionel Shriver. The full multiday festival – which last year saw 175 authors appearing in more than 120 events across 10 days – will still not go ahead. However, Wee Write, a festival for children and young people, will now go ahead in autumn on a smaller scale. When the festival’s cancellation was announced, Aye Write said that it would be planning pop-up events. The donation “means there will be an increased number of these”. Val McDermid, Douglas Stuart and Andrew O’Hagan were among the authors who criticised the cancellation of the festival after its application for £77,500 of funding was rejected. McDermid said it …

‘The privatisation of our local park’: calls to save Glasgow’s ‘second Hampden’ for the public | Glasgow

In Mount Florida, a south Glasgow neighbourhood, Scotland’s national football stadium, Hampden Park, looms large. But just half a mile north are the relics of another, with terraces and crush barriers surrounding a pitch that was once the heart of a 50,000-seat stadium known as “the second Hampden”. At one time home to local teams Queen’s Park and Third Lanark – as well as hosting Scottish Cup finals in the late 19th century – the pitch is now part of Cathkin Park, a council-maintained public space enjoyed by local families, community football teams and urban wildlife alike. Leased since 2022 by the Jimmy Johnstone Academy, a charity set up in memory of the late Celtic player, it is also the home ground of two youth teams. But a new barrier erected by the academy around the pitch is meeting opposition, with one local man attempting to challenge the city council in court over the legality of the fence, in a case believed to be one of the first of its kind in Scotland. Props from botched Willy Wonka event raise more than £2,000 for Palestinian aid charity | Glasgow

Props from a botched Willy Wonka event in Glasgow that went viral after frustrated attenders called the police have raised more than £2,000 at auction for a Palestinian aid charity. Fabric backdrops from the “immersive experience”, which was cancelled midway, were found in a bin outside the warehouse where it took place. Monorail Music, a record shop in the city, auctioned the remains on eBay after they were passed on by the finder. The listing said: “Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to own a piece of history.” The Wonka event gained online notoriety after images of the sparsely decorated warehouse in Glasgow, staffed by actors dressed as Oompa Loompas and other characters, spread worldwide. On Thursday, the listing had a total of 57 bids and the items were sold for £2,250. Michael Kasparis, online manager of Monorail, described the outcome as “amazing”. Nice face mask on. And then lots of water and then up early for a bike ride or whatever it is that you do.” Oasis fans might ask: “Who is this and what have you done with my rock’n’roll star?” Happily, as it turns out, Gallagher has lost none of the charisma that made him one of the most electrifying frontmen around. Two weeks after he and Stone Roses guitarist John Squire scored a No 1 with their first collaborative album (self-titled), they’re here at Barrowlands in Glasgow taking those new songs for a spin. Within seconds of the duo arriving on stage – Gallagher with his wide-armed swagger; Squire looming over his guitar like a mop-haired raven …
