Warning: Spoilers for Gladiator II are below. The newly released trailer reveals that Mescal’s character is actually the son of Maximus (played by Russell Crowe in the first film), and not Lucius Verus I, as he was made to believe since birth. In the scene, Lucius’s mother Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen) shares words of wisdom with him as he readies himself for battle, saying: “Take your father’s strength, his name was Maximus, and I see him in you.” In another shot, Mescal looks at a stone wall with “Maximus” carved into it. Ridley Scott’s Gladiator Sequel Production Over Budget

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator Sequel Production Over Budget

Ridley Scott’s Very Expensive Roman Holiday With accidents on the set, complaints about animal abuse and now reports that the production went wildly over budget, sources tell Rambling Reporter that Ridley Scott’s long-anticipated Gladiator sequel is leaving Paramount execs feeling a bit like Joaquin Phoenix’s Emperor Commodus — “terribly vexed.” Initially budgeted at $165 million, sources say that figure has ballooned to something closer to $310 million. (Paramount insiders insist the net cost of the 49-day shoot was under $250 million.) “It’s a runaway,” says one source. “It’s not being managed.” The strikes account for some of that money; the shutdowns starting in July reportedly cost $600,000 a week, or a total of about $10 million, until Scott resumed shooting in December (though there were reports he kept cameras rolling during the work stoppages, shooting extras at crowd scenes in Malta, where he built a Coliseum set). But even before the walkouts, Fortuna clearly frowned on this sequel, which stars Paul Mescal as a grown-up Lucius, the young royal in the original who worshiped Russell Crowe’s Maximus. A …

The Secrets Behind Ridley Scott’s Most Celebrated Epics

In Highlight Reel, Awards Insider speaks with some of this year’s most notable Oscar nominees about their entire body of nominated work. In this entry, we speak with Napoleon production designer Arthur Max, recognized for the fourth time for his work with director Ridley Scott. When Arthur Max found out about his Oscar nomination for Napoleon, he was very awake, still on European time—specifically, Malta time, since he’d just finished shooting Gladiator 2 with his collaborator of more than 25 years, Ridley Scott. And as he gets to talking about his remarkable career, designing some of American cinema’s most indelibly epic landscapes, he finds himself thinking full circle, about the way his job has changed with the times, and specifically, the way making Gladiator 2 varied so greatly from its predecessor, which netted Max his first Oscar nod in 2001 and, of course, went on to win best picture. “The techniques have evolved to where it’s more efficient in terms of time and money to do big statues and enormous columns—the techniques of 3D modeling …
