Late Savinho double helps Girona beat Rayo Vallecano 3-0 in downpour

Girona’s Brazilian winger Savinho scored twice in added time to help the hosts beat Rayo Vallecano 3-0 in torrential rain on Monday and lift the season’s surprise LaLiga package back to second place in the standings. Girona now have 59 points, six behind Real Madrid and two ahead of third-placed Barcelona. They dominated possession against Rayo but struggled to find the net on a sodden surface that deteriorated in the downpour before finally breaking the deadlock with a first time effort by Ukrainian Viktor Tsygankov in the 52nd minute. The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Pep Chavarria got a second yellow card in the 76th and Savinho made the most of two quick counter attacks to strike twice in a four minute spell at the end to wrap up the points for the Catalan side. Berenguer scores twice to help Athletic Bilbao beat Girona 3-2

Alex Berenguer scored twice as Athletic Bilbao brought high-flying Girona back down to earth with a 3-2 victory on Monday, a result that provided a reality check to the Catalans’ lofty LaLiga title ambitions. Berenguer intercepted a pass from rival Aleix Garcia to score and give Athletic the lead in the second minute but Viktor Tsyhankov levelled from close range in he 49th minute. However, Berenguer put the locals back in front with another strike in the 56th minute and Inaki Williams extended their lead in similar fashion four minutes later. Eric Garcia put Girona back in the game netting a close-range effort from a Aleix Garcia free kick but the hosts held on to secure the win. Despite suffering their second consecutive league loss, Girona remain second in the standings with 56 points, two ahead third-placed Barcelona and six behind leaders Real Madrid. GIRONA, Spain :Spain’s surprise packages Girona were held to a goalless home draw by Real Sociedad on Saturday, leaving them a point adrift of LaLiga leaders Real Madrid. The Catalans are second in the standings on 56 points behind Real who host city rivals Atletico on Sunday. Girona thought they had taken the lead after 24 minutes but VAR intervened to overturn Yangel Herrera’s header for offside and Sociedad had Mikel Oyarzabal’s effort overruled, also for offside. The visitors looked more dangerous after the break as Brais Mendez drew a great save from Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga in the 72nd minute. The home side, whose manager Michel was sent off in the second half, almost sealed a late victory through a great effort from Herrera which keeper Alex Remiro saved with his feet.
