Former Google CEO Alarmed by Teen Boys Falling in Love With AI Girlfriends

Former Google CEO Alarmed by Teen Boys Falling in Love With AI Girlfriends

“You put a 12- or 13-year-old in front of these things…” TFW AI GF Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt seems mighty concerned about today’s youth becoming obsessed with AI girlfriends. During a recent interview on “The Prof G Show” podcast, Schmidt suggested that both parents and young people are ill-equipped to handle what he calls an “unexpected problem of existing technology.” These AI companions are, as the former Google CEO said, so “perfect” that they end up enthralling young people and causing them to disconnect from the real world. “That kind of obsession is possible,” he told NYU Stern professor Scott Galloway, “especially for people who are not fully formed.” While women are also turning to AI romantic partners, Schmidt said that young men are particularly susceptible as they “turn to the online world for enjoyment and sustenance.” Thanks to algorithms pushing problematic content, these young men often stumble across dangerous content, be it extremist influencers or manipulative chatbots. “You put a 12- or 13-year-old in front of these things, and they have access to …

One shows an AI woman locked into medieval prison stocks by the neck and wrists, pledging, “Help me, I will do anything for you.” Another ad, targeted using Meta’s technology at men aged 18 to 65, features an anime character and the text “Want to see more of NSFW pics?” Several of the 980 Meta ads WIRED found for “personalized AI companion” app Rosytalk promise around-the-clock chats with very-young-looking AI-generated women. They used tags including “#barelylegal,” “#goodgirls,” and “teens.” Rosytalk also ran 990 ads under at least nine brand names on Meta platforms, including Rosygirl, Rosy Role Play Chat, and AI Chat GPT. “AI Girlfriends” Are Hoarding Your Personal Data

“AI Girlfriends” Are Hoarding Your Personal Data

“One of the scariest things about the AI relationship chatbots is the potential for manipulation of their users.” Trust Issues Spilling your hopes, secrets, and fantasies to your AI girlfriend? You might want to reconsider. In a new report, experts at the Mozilla Foundation warn that AI companion bots — including the popular app Replika — are plagued by deeply concerning privacy pitfalls and murky data use policies. “So-called ‘AI soulmates’ are giving Mozilla the ick when it comes to how much personal information they collect,” reads the Mozilla report, “especially given the lack of transparency and user control over how this data is protected from abuse.” In other words, bots designed to provide humans with an outlet for intimacy are data-hoarding troves of privacy tripwires — and the companies making them might just be using your very intimate data for their profit. “To be perfectly blunt, AI girlfriends and boyfriends are not your friends,” Mozilla researcher Misha Rykov said in a statement (emphasis his.) “Although they are marketed as something that will enhance your …

‘AI Girlfriends’ Are a Privacy Nightmare

‘AI Girlfriends’ Are a Privacy Nightmare

You shouldn’t trust any answers a chatbot sends you. And you probably shouldn’t trust it with your personal information either. That’s especially true for “AI girlfriends” or “AI boyfriends,” according to new research. An analysis into 11 so-called romance and companion chatbots, published on Wednesday by the Mozilla Foundation, has found a litany of security and privacy concerns with the bots. Collectively, the apps, which have been downloaded more than 100 million times on Android devices, gather huge amounts of people’s data; use trackers that send information to Google, Facebook, and companies in Russia and China; allow users to use weak passwords; and lack transparency about their ownership and the AI models that power them. Since OpenAI unleashed ChatGPT on the world in November 2022, developers have raced to deploy large language models and create chatbots that people can interact with and pay to subscribe to. The Mozilla research provides a glimpse into how this gold rush may have neglected people’s privacy, and into tensions between emerging technologies and how they gather and use data. …

Boyfriend Believes The Valentine’s Day Flowers His Girlfriend’s Dad Gives Her Every Year Are Creepy

Boyfriend Believes The Valentine’s Day Flowers His Girlfriend’s Dad Gives Her Every Year Are Creepy

Valentine’s Day is a time filled with romance, an opportunity to show the people you care about just how much you love them.  One woman is feeling conflicted, however, after her boyfriend claimed that her father’s sweet gestures toward her on Valentine’s Day were inappropriate, going as far as to label him “creepy.” The woman disagreed with her partner’s evaluation and shared that her father has always treated her like a queen on Valentine’s Day, regardless of her age.  Feeling uncertain, she took to the r/relationship_advice subreddit, asking others if her boyfriend had a point and if her father’s actions were unsettling.  The 23-year-old woman revealed that ever since she was a little girl, her father has gifted her chocolates and flowers on Valentine’s Day.  “He’d always give them to me when I was little, when I went to college and beyond he had them delivered to me,” the woman wrote. “It’s just a tradition for us. I think it’s sweet, I grew up in a really tight-knit, close family.”  Photo: ValeryMinyaev / Shutterstock RELATED: Woman Asks If She’s ‘Unreasonable’ To Want A ‘Romantic’ Valentine’s …

OpenAI Failing to Destroy Contraband AI Girlfriends Flooding GPT Store

OpenAI Failing to Destroy Contraband AI Girlfriends Flooding GPT Store

OpenAI has responded to the onslaught of AI girlfriends in its GPT Store. “OpenAI has automatic and manual systems to help ensure GPTs adhere to usage policies,” a company spokesperson told Futurism in an emailed statement. “We remove GPTs that violate our policies as we see them. We’re continually working to make our enforcement more robust. Users are also able to report GPTs.” This boilerplate rejoinder sounds good enough, but a quick skim of the GPT Store still finds many bots that are very blatantly in violation of OpenAI’s usage policies, which prohibits any tools “dedicated to fostering romantic companionship” or which contain “sexually explicit or suggestive content.” Given the clear proliferation of obviously rule-breaking chatbots, including some that have been available for multiple weeks or months, the company’s statement rings awfully hollow. Indeed, when searching the GPT Store using keywords like “girlfriend,” “romantic,” and “horny,” Futurism found chatbots that should obviously be prohibited — some of which seem, per their stated age, to predate the public opening of the marketplace. One of the bots we stumbled across …
