Javier Milei and Elon Musk are giga happy. Does anyone care?

Javier Milei and Elon Musk in Austin, United States, on April 12, 2024. Texas hold ’em Chip and Dale? No. Wallace and Gromit? No. How about Dumb and Dumber? On April 12, Argentine President Javier Milei and Tesla CEO Elon Musk met in Texas. In the space of a few hours, they visited Tesla Giga Texas, the company’s factory which opened in April 2022. Then they had a long one-to-one chat. On the agenda? “The need for free markets and [to] defend the ideas of freedom.” Even sartorial freedom, apparently. Boring cargo Let’s get straight to the matter with the pants worn by the Argentine president. Technically, they’re cargo pants, recognizable by their side patch pockets inspired by those in which British soldiers stored their maps at the beginning of the 19th century. Visually, they’re a total disgrace bordering on outright visual aggression. Too narrow? Yes. Too dirty? Affirmative. Too faded? Yes. Too wrinkled? Definitely. Tesla becomes Austin’s largest private employer as Giga Texas headcount surges

Tesla becomes Austin’s largest private employer as Giga Texas headcount surges

Tesla becomes Austin’s largest private employer as the headcount at Gigafactory Texas surges to a ridiculously high level. The automaker is a fan of large manufacturing projects. Most of its facilities are referred to as “gigafactories” because they produce batteries, vehicles, or power electronics in volumes calculated by the “gigawatt-hour. And those facilities employ an impressive number of people. Gigafactory Texas in Austin is the best example. We were shocked to learn that Tesla was already employing 20,000 people at the complex last September. Now, in a new report filed with Travis County’s economic development program (via Bloomberg), Tesla confirmed it grew its headcount to 22,777 workers in Austin over the last few months. That’s enough to surpass H-E-B to become the new largest private employer in the Texas capital. Tesla’s headcount growth in the last few months at Gigafactory Texas can be explained by the start and ramp-up of Cybertruck production. The automaker also moved its headquarters to Gigafactory Texas and it has been growing many engineering teams in Austin – although its engineering headquarters …

Tesla (TSLA) stock drops on report it is reducing EV output at Giga Shanghai

Tesla (TSLA) stock drops on report it is reducing EV output at Giga Shanghai

Tesla’s (TSLA) stock dropped this morning due to a report that automakers are reducing their electric vehicle output at Gigafactory Shanghai because of lower demand. Bloomberg says that Tesla removed one and a half day of work at Gigafactory Shanghai: The US carmaker earlier this month instructed employees at its Shanghai facility to lower production of both the Model Y and Model 3 — the two vehicles Tesla makes in China — by working five days a week instead of the usual 6 1/2 days, the people said, asking not to be identified because they’re not authorized to speak publicly. The change reportedly happened earlier this month and Tesla hasn’t communicated to employees when it plans to go back to full capacity. This comes after indications that Tesla clearly had more difficulty than usual selling vehicles in China lately. Earlier this week, Electrek reported how Tesla has been offering deeper discounts and incentives than usual for customers to take delivery by the end of the month. The Bloomberg report also claims that the reduction in …

Majority of Tesla Giga Berlin workers vote against union, but IG Metall still makes progress

Majority of Tesla Giga Berlin workers vote against union, but IG Metall still makes progress

A majority of Tesla Gigafactory Berlin workers voted against union representatives of IG Metall in their new work council, but the union has still made significant progress. Work councils in Germany work almost like little governments within companies to represent the workers. They can work with unions or be independent of them. Workers at Gigafactory Berlin had to vote on a new worker council yesterday. Tagesspiegel reports that IG Metall has made a lot of progress with taking about 40% of the seats on the council, the biggest group within it, but it failed to gain a majority (translated from German): IG Metall narrowly won the works council election at Tesla in Grünheide. 39.4 percent of the workforce voted for the union’s candidates, followed in second place with 35.9 percent by the list of employees who dominated the previous works council. In the new 39-person works council, IG Metall is the largest group with 16 members, the Tagesspiegel learned from the company on Wednesday evening. However, the union clearly missed the majority. Both Tesla and IG Metall declared …

Giga ML wants to help companies deploy LLMs offline

Giga ML wants to help companies deploy LLMs offline

AI is all the rage — particularly text-generating AI, also known as large language models (think models along the lines of ChatGPT). In one recent survey of ~1,000 enterprise organizations, 67.2% say that they see adopting large language models (LLMs) as a top priority by early 2024. But barriers stand in the way. According to the same survey, a lack of customization and flexibility, paired with the inability to preserve company knowledge and IP, were — and are — preventing many businesses from deploying LLMs into production. That got Varun Vummadi and Esha Manideep Dinne thinking: what might a solution to the enterprise LLM adoption challenge look like? In search of one, they founded Giga ML, a startup building a platform that lets companies deploy LLMs on-premise — ostensibly cutting costs and preserving privacy in the process. “Data privacy and customizing LLMs are some of the biggest challenges faced by enterprises when adopting LLMs to solve problems,” Vummadi told TechCrunch in an email interview. “Giga ML addresses both of these challenges.” Giga ML offers its …
