The Holdovers: Oscar-nominated film starring Paul Giamatti accused of plagiarism

Get our free weekly email for all the latest cinematic news from our film critic Clarisse Loughrey Get our The Life Cinematic email for free Simon Stephenson, the Scottish screenwriter whose credits include Pixar’s critically acclaimed animated feature film Luca, has accused Oscar-nominated movie The Holdovers of plagiarism. The allegation lands on the eve of this year’s Academy Awards, where the 2023 comedy-drama is up for five trophies including Best Original Screenplay. In an exclusive report by Variety, emails sent by Stephenson to Lesley Mackey, senior director of credits at the Writers Guild of America, along with other WGA staffers, make the complaint that director Alexander Payne’s film plagiarises “line by line” from a well-known, unproduced, screenplay of his. Stephenson’s screenplay, Frisco, is a drama about a weary middle-aged children’s doctor and the 15-year-old patient he is made to look after. The Holdovers stars Paul Giamatti as an unpopular classics professor at an all-male boarding school, who is forced to supervise a 15-year-old student during the holiday break. Along with the film’s Best Original screenplay …

Paul Giamatti Is Great in Everything

Paul Giamatti Is Great in Everything

In 2016, the alt-comic cable talk show The Chris Gethard Show engineered a strange form of call-in game show. A Dumpster was placed in the middle of the stage, and Gethard dared his viewing audience to guess what was inside, permitting them one question each. All kinds of anarchic guessing ensued, especially once Gethard’s guests on the show got a peek inside the Dumpster, but it took about 35 minutes to reach the answer: the actor Paul Giamatti, who had been cheerfully squatting inside. “People have never been this excited to maybe see me,” he said later in the show. “So I thought, I’m just going to draw it out.” By that point in his career, Giamatti was an Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated actor already well known for films such as Sideways and his lead performance in HBO’s John Adams. “You’re a man of huge accomplishments, and I can’t believe you did this for us,” Gethard said after the reveal—to which Giamatti replied, “No, no, it was my pleasure.” This avuncular, down-for-anything attitude has been part of …

‘The Holdovers’ Star Paul Giamatti Talks His Oscar Nomination

‘The Holdovers’ Star Paul Giamatti Talks His Oscar Nomination

It’s been almost 20 years since Paul Giamatti’s last Oscar nomination, for Ron Howard’s Cinderella Man in 2006. This year, with Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Giamatti scores his long-overdue first lead nod after coming extremely close with another Payne collaboration, Sideways, in 2004. The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly teacher (Giamatti) at a New England boarding school, forced to watch over a small group of students over the holidays. He’s joined on campus by a grieving cook (played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who was also nominated today) and a rebellious senior looking for trouble (newcomer Dominic Sessa). The film scored five total Oscar nominations Tuesday, including for picture and original screenplay. Tuesday morning, the veteran character actor chatted with The Hollywood Reporter in the wake of his second Oscar nomination to talk about receiving that news, his collaboration with Payne and what he might like to try out in future projects. Where were you when you got the news? I have to admit, I was asleep. My manager woke me up. I’m a night owl. I …

Paul Giamatti ‘terrified’ to be himself as award season buzz tips star for Oscar | Ents & Arts News

He’s one of the finest character actors of his generation but Paul Giamatti says he’s “terrified” at the prospect of having to be himself as praise is heaped upon him this awards season. So far his new film The Holdovers has won him a Golden Globe, seen him nominated for a Best Actor at the BAFTAs and he’s widely tipped to be a frontrunner in the same category at the Oscars. Speaking to Sky News, the US actor admitted: “I’m terrified, I dread having to speak in public and having to be myself… but because I really like this movie it’s been easier to do.” The movie sees him reunited with filmmaker Alexander Payne whom he last worked with 20 years ago on the film Sideways. Giamatti’s portrait of middle-aged disappointment back then was as funny as it was painful to watch as his character embarked on a road trip through California wine country. ‘The Holdovers’ review: Paul Giamatti and Alexander Payne reunite for curmudgeon comedy

‘The Holdovers’ review: Paul Giamatti and Alexander Payne reunite for curmudgeon comedy

Alexander Payne is up to his old tricks. The celebrated director behind such heralded films as Sideways, Election, About Schmidt, The Descendants, and Nebraska has returned to cinemas with The Holdovers, another tale of a cantankerous anti-hero with a wincing wit. This time Payne’s cutting comedy is headlined by Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and newcomer Dominic Sessa. Early buzz suggests The Holdovers could be the American filmmaker’s best shot yet at Best Picture. But can this bittersweet comedy live up to its festival hype?  What is the buzz around The Holdovers?  Payne’s latest debuted strong out of the Telluride Film Festival, sparking enthusiasm at the Toronto International Film Festival, which resulted in packed screenings and rolled into a new wave of largely positive reviews. On paper, The Holdovers is immediately promising, reuniting Payne with leading man Paul Giamatti, who starred in Sideways — a caustic comedy that earned the former a Best Director nod and Best Adapted Screenplay win.
